Nice video Nick, very "informative" as always. I live along the Clearwater river in Idaho. We use a lot of the same techniques that you showed. A popular way for drifting out here has been to use a simple plastic bead instead of roe. 1/0 octopus hook, an inch of yarn through the egg loop, a large plastic bead pegged with a rubber band, 3-4 foot leader, a dab of scent on the bead. I also love bobber fishing, I use a snap swivel through bottom of the bobber instead of running the line through it. Simply run the line in the end of the swivel instead of the bobber makes it much more sensitive to a soft bite. Totally Floatatious!

I fish steelhead in the willammette valley of oregon and have found that in the summer 6lb cameleon made by maxima i know they are not P-line but still great line it also seems like the fish do not see it or detect it as much as "clear line" in the winter i use 8lb green izorline this line again is not P-line but works great and is very cheep. I have found over the about 10 years of steelheading that spinning rods that are 8'6" medium to light action works great for drifting i suggest lamiglass

It's a beginner fishing rod for pan fish for the most part. I don't think of any fishing setup as good or bad as long as your out fishing and catching fish with it. Would I suggest it for this type of fishing? No I would not.

quick question, for river fishing salmon on a bottom drift setup how long should a leader be for clear water? typical setup would be mainline to swivel, slinky weight leader and corkie/hook, some people here like 6ft+ leaders, is it really necessary?

Steelhead is by far my favorite fish. I guess growing up on the columbia river and near many tributaries I never considered it an advanced fish. Just bank plunk with a spin glow sit back and wait for the bell to ring.

+Derek Wilson If you liberal fly fishing idiots had your way no one would be able to touch them....... They handled it with care and have every right too. It the sportsman who pay for the fish and have every right to enjoy whats theirs.
@d.wilson1402
@d.wilson1402 8 жыл бұрын
It's all about the fish and preserving them. It's obvious you don't know what you are talking about. How do you know that the fish is a keeper? If it's a native most likely it's not yours, so why over handle it? For example there is a reason why native kings aren't even supposed to enter a boat per WA fishing regulations.
@d.wilson1402
@d.wilson1402 8 жыл бұрын
I also take offense to being called a liberal. I like to fly fish and gear fish, I would probably bet I catch more steelys and salmon then you do Mr. Internet warrior.
@thatdamguy00
@thatdamguy00 8 жыл бұрын
Derek Wilson How do you know that wasnt a keeper or that are open to wilds? You dont either, I understand the balance and why you shouldn't over handle fish but I am tired of hearing people say you shouldn't do this or that. Especially when its to a fellow sportsman who has a lot of time and money invested in their sport of choice. Also fyi I dont fish for steels but I do fish a lot for silvers and kings. Sorry to offend you by assuming you were a liberal, most fly fisherman I meet are.

question. How do you know the difference between a rainbow and a steelhead?
@rileymccord3777
@rileymccord3777 7 жыл бұрын
Travis Wakefield Steelhead have gone out to the ocean and lived the majority of their lives there, and returned to freshwater to spawn. Visually, they retain very few of the black spots that their river-dwelling brothers have, oftentimes they fade away and form only a few speckled black dots along their back. They will also retain the red band on their side, and an orange band forms underneath that as well. White-tipped fins are common on steelhead and older fish can eventually get a crook in their jaw much like a salmon has. Hope this helps.

So "Steelhead basics" is'nt for beginners ....must be a tough sport
@avid2112
@avid2112 5 жыл бұрын
It's not that difficult. On the Trinity it is essentially like fishing for trout just on a larger scale,as far as reading water. The biggest obstacle you will have generally will be run timing and conditions. In the winter rainfall can make fishing unpredictable and tough. The tailwater fishery of the trinity is much more manageable,particularly in fall. This coupled with easy roadside access to many obvious fishing spots and you have a great opportunity to chase these special fish. Good luck.

I dont think a leader is necassary. I have caught literally tons of steelhead with 8-lb main line all the way to a octopus hook. I prefer to use the clear sheffield/black bird floats or balsa wood black sheffield floats but a pack of the cork 3 for a dollar floats work just as well.
