Hey you! Sorry for the prolonged absence in the video-making world. Life took a hold of some things, but I am back now and I am hoping to begin a consistent upload schedule. In this video, I am chasing summer run steelhead in early December while I am waiting for the coastal rivers to fill with fish. The fish are beginning to become dark, but the fishing is enjoyable and often very peaceful as the cold condition limit the pressure. I hope you all are getting into some fish in your local systems, and thanks for watching!

Haha! Hey man, those fall days wet wading for chrome steelhead on dry lines is way overrated and not fun at all... I prefer not feeling my toes throwing T-14 for cold fish that don't fight lol. I appreciate the nice comment!

Steelheading! Great job, way to brave out the cold conditions and some tough days. On landing the fish- It's so tough with Steelhead; there's such a variety of factors. The things I try to do to reduce loss as much as possible: 1) Steelhead always fight to go upstream. Use it to your advantage! When you get a slow take (and I know exactly what you mean by the lethargic grabs) resist setting the hook. It might pull the fly a little further out from the fish's mouth, setting it more at the corner which can be bad during headshakes. I try to pinch down on my line to create "drag", which hopefully gives the fish some resistance - which it won't like - and hopefully try to run with the fly to sink it in. If it still is on, but not running, I'll slowly lift my rod up and toward the bank. Because the take is going to be downstream of you, lifting up and away sets the angle of the hook, hopefully, at a 90 degree to the fishes head and thereby getting the hook in better. 2) Rod discipline. Try to limit the bounce of the rod/rod tip as much as possible. It translates to line wobble which might goldilocks free the hook from the fish's mouth. 3) Landing the fish. Position yourself downstream, at the bank. With a super long two handed rod, I put the butt-section behind my neck and slowly move the tip of the rod toward the bank to bring the fly line to my hands. If the fish won't let you do it, then you haven't let it run enough yet. Let it run! There's fighting a strong, winter run, which will take at least a few minutes versus playing it out for 8+ minutes (which I'm sure we've all seen on the water) which is what I'm sure you were insinuating. Once I get the fly line to my hands, I gently guide the fish in to shallow water to tail it. 4) It's Steelheading, dude. They're anadromous fish that escaped bigger fish, sharks, whales, fishermen, disease, famine and all sorts of other bananas stuff the ocean threw at it. You're not fighting a bulldog lake trout that was top dog its whole life! I lose about 1/3 of my fish fighting them; it's just a fact of life.

Hey Andrew, thank you very much for this comment!! Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I really appreciate your insight and knowledge on this. Lifting my rod too early is definitely something I still struggle with occasionally, especially when I'm out of the mindset that I might actually hook something, then bam! Haha. I really like your recommendation on rod discipline. Especially when I'm fishing small traditional barbless hooks (I'm usually always fishing barbless, but the small hooks seem to wiggle around slightly more.) I notice serious movement in the hook after tailing the fish compared to intruder hooks. Since you seem like a very knowledgeable two handed fisher, do you react any differently to "setting the hook" on a Steelhead when it's directly downstream of you compared to more at a 45? Looking back on most of my fish I have lost, the ones that seem to pop off more times than not are the ones that eat the fly in the hang down. Thanks again for the great comment though, I really appreciate it!

@@FlyAddict_Fishing I'd say I'm about as knowledgeable in the same way a lemming is in a maze searching for cheese - I've just hit my head enough times against walls to find the way out. I've strip-set hooks on fish on the dangle when they won't commit to the grab, but it's about a 25% success rate in my experience. Usually when I get a fish mid-swing, it's an aggressive take and the fight's on. The dangle is a tough one, because you've got an interested fish, just one that isn't committed. A popular tactic is to pull the rod back and push it forward a few times in the current to give the fly a little extra action. If that doesn't work, strip in and then just swing through again without letting out line or stepping down.

@@Null1fy Haha, that's the traditional way of learning I think, at least with steelhead lol. I'm doing the same thing over here on my end too, I just hit my head a tad bit more often I reckon! And thanks! I've heard so many different theories on proper hook sets on the dangle, but like you said, fish that take it further out usually stick pretty well for me, but not the other way. Which sucks too cause like half of my eats are on the dangle lol. Thanks again for the tips, it's only my second season in the spey game and it's been a big learning curve from single handed stuff, but my goodness is it a blast.

Nice steelhead! What is your fly fishing gear setup? Can u do a gear video? Are you fishing dry line or sinking line? I’m looking to getting into fly fishing for steelhead. Not sure what gear to use or if a dry line setup would work for swinging streamers for steelhead. I’ve only got a 6 wt rod. It’s an Orvis Hydros 9’6”

It's actually a CND! I would definitely get a B&W if I could afford it though cause man those things are rockets😍 and yep, my Redington has been "retired" to my emergency rod which I'm sure I will have to take advantage of soon with how much I've been chopping wood on these coastal streams lately!!😂

@@FlyAddict_Fishing awesome!! I started with Redington too. Then I got a Thomas &Thomas after that i got my self a B&W. Only thing is that I only get to swing the CW river once a year always the first week of October. I made it a tradition going up there from las Vegas for the last 15 years. As much i would like to try to swing on winter time i just couldn't my buddy can't handle the cold 😅🥶🥶
