Fun Fact: The Steely Dan song “Everything You Did,” which was released in '76, included the line “Turn up the Eagles, the neighbors are listening.” In return, The Eagles gave a shout out to Steely Dan in "Hotel California". The lyrics "stabbed it with their STEELY knives..." refer to their band name. That's just pretty damn cool! 🎵❤✌

A "steely dan" was a popular metal dildo at the time. FYI, this band is their own genre - there are NO others like them. Once you get into the Steely Dan catalog, you'll find out that it isn't just another "rabbit hole"....it's a mine shaft, with many, many surprising side tunnels - rock, jazz, funk, reggae, and much more. Enjoy the journey - don't bother leaving bread crumbs, because you might never want to get out. I could list at least 30 tracks that will amaze you with their quality and diverse sounds, but posters below have done a great job of that. One they missed, which is one of my favorites is "Haitian Divorce". Have a great ride.

Steely Dan is a duo group formed by members Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. They got the name from a "Sex Toy"!! They would bring in musicians for one solo on one song, because they were perfectionists on the production side. They were considered to be the most polished music producers of all thime, and it shows in the details when you allow yourself to dissect the music and instruments involved. But it drove the record company execs crazy because of the time and money it would take for them to complete one song, not to mention the whole album! I jammed out to these guys all through high school and since then too. One of my favorite groups of all time!

All SD songs should be listened to using a lyric video. This song is about addiction and how we humans find comfort in repetitive behaviors, even if they're negative ones. Try "Peg", "Reelin' In The Years", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Dirty Work", "Aja", "Deacon Blues", "Black Cow", "Kid Charlemagne" and only about 100 others because there's really no such thing as a bad SD song.
@moonlitegram
@moonlitegram 2 жыл бұрын
I couldn't disagree with this more. I mean for one thing, even if you want to put that much emphasis on lyrics, lyric videos on youtube are notoriously terrible at getting the lyrics right. So they're usually not even worth what they're trying to accomplish. But beyond that, there is so much to get lost in with the music in Steely Dan, that its not even necessary to know what the song's about to appreciate the music. I mean its music - not poetry. Don't get me wrong, I love what SD does lyrically too and its definitely worth taking the time to look into the lyrics. But watching lyric videos on your first listen through with the music is probably the last thing you should do.. It draws your attention to the screen and away from the audio in your ears. I strongly encourage people to just close their eyes and listen to music as it is initially, and then go back and look into the lyrics on subsequent listens.

Denny Dias's solo is one of the very best ever on a pop-rock record. Somewhat ironically it is more jazz that rock. Ironic because many fans of this tune would never consider listening to jazz. The solo not only sounds great sonically, but listen to the rhythmic patterns that are happening. Wow! Play them on a drum and that would be a great solo. Also cool how the samba pattern morphs into a funky vamp at the en. As you say, 'There is so much substance'. And every time you listen you WILL find something new.

Like myself, Fagen and Becker were from the NYC area and it's probably best to describe this song as having a "Latin" sound. It would be safe to say that there is a bit of Santana's influence in this song remembering that this song was only 2 or 3 years removed from Santana's big splash at Woodstock which gave rise to "Latin" sounding music in the early '70s. In addition, the Sitar harks back to the work of Ravi Shankar and George Harrison and, finally, the electronic keyboard/organ is reminiscent of the Doors. This song is so rich in references it never fails to delight.

SD is the biggest rabbit hole ever. 60+ songs from 1972 to 1980 and every single one is great. Not kidding.

Steely Dan is the only band I know of where every song is good. You can tell effort was put into each one. There are no filler tracks on any of their 9 studio albums.

Adored seeing them live in the eighties and then again about ten years ago.

Spot on interpretation. It’s about not wanting to learn your lesson. It’s a metaphor for not learning from your mistakes.

Got to experience their works live a few months before Walter's passing , could tell he wasn't feeling his best but the show was awesome as usual . Thanks for reacting to the music we lived. It all influenced many aspiring musicians
