Wow! Where to start? I love that you love jazz. Steely Dan - the Bomb! Donald Fagen and Walter Becker used some of the best jazz musicians in the biz! Since you love jazz, please check out Lyle Mays, Close To Home. He was the cofounder of the Pat Metheny Group, may he R.I.P. Piano player/keyboardist extraodinaire. His phrasing was next-to-none.

You really must check out Donald Fagen's recent solo work if you like this. You will totally dig his albums Sunken Condos and Morph the Cat - heavily jazz based!! Standout tracks... H-gang, What I Do, Morph the Cat, Weather In My Head (There is great live video of this track from the Letterman Show). The last couple of Steely Dan albums are fantastic, as this track shows they were still firing on all cylinders.

When this album came out in 2003, I was already a huge Steely Dan fan. About a month after the album came out the grocery store I had been working for for 14 years filed bankruptcy and announced they were closing. Suddenly "Everything Must Go!" signs were all over the store...ironically I got a kick out of it. The liquidator ("Harvey") even let me bring in a boom box and play this and "The Last Mall" on repeat for my entire final shifts. Great album btw

MY OLD SCHOOL...their song referencing California tumbling into the sea...last time I saw them in Oregon, when they sang that line the crowd erupted loudly in the affirmative, as I was in 2nd row center, I saw that this really amused Donald Fagan, he smiled and grinned, all the while singing. I didn’t get that close the first time I saw them in 1974 or 75. Karat having been able to see and hear them live a giant Lessing.

Yup, completely agree!! Having all my albums from “the day”...It pleases me to hear young educated musicians and fans of great music ‘discover’ the music I always loved and cherished and ‘discover’ that it’s some of the greatest, finest original music ever recorded. I’m impressed that Chod is honestly seeking to fill some musical pot holes he encountered early in his life, and by the sounds of his reaction, he’s got a lot of them filled already! Keep up the good work!

They floated in the space between rock, r&b, funk, and jazz, with country occasionally included in some early tracks. Although they were at their peak in the disco era, that was only a minor influence for them then.

The last track on their last album is your favorite song. Talk about going out on top. I see this song two ways - one an indictment on greed at any cost corporations like Enron whose employees now reminisce about what they once had. Two, the ending of Steely Dan as a recording corporation, although the band would live on through amazing tours, something Fagen hated doing during their heyday. Luckily, I got to see them 4 times from 2003 on and they were awesome each time. Love this whole album, it's like they didn't want to end on a bad album and ruin their perfect discography.
