Finally found a reactor that actually understands and appreciates what he’s hearing, not just fake overhyped reactions/automatically likes everything. I noticed you weren’t blown away by Gaucho and even though it’s my favorite song of theirs, I also didn’t care for it at first. Keep it up man, we all can benefit from the intelligence this channel brings

I have no technical knowledge of music, music theory, reading music, composing music or understanding how songs or symphonies are crafted. My knowledge is limited to what my ears tell me. According to my ears, Steely Dan’s body of work consists of one masterpiece after another. It sounds very complicated and I can only assume that genius musical minds are involved. In other words, “Damn!! These guys are great!!” Thanks for inviting us along on this journey.

Ok. But aside from the complexity, which is there to reward repeated listens, you'll also agree there are the HOOKS, vocal and/or instrumental, that will have you whistling, humming, singing along for the rest of your life. That combo is unbeatable and I don't know many artists who've nailed it as solidly as SD.

In fact, one of the boys spoke of the influence of disco on this album. But no one who wasn't alive at the time can ever imagine the massive, overwhelming, all-engulfing force of disco on music and social life then... It was like a super-tsunami of loose shit...

“Layers of perfection” is a good description as to how most of Steely Dan’s songs sound. In addition, that “WTF....how can a band be this consistently good” look at around 05:39 , is how we all have felt at one time or another upon indulging in this band’s vast repertoire . Let’s just say that song was STEELYGOOD!!! 😎🤘🏼

This song was my all time favorite song growing up (Class of 81, when this album came out)... I understood (without knowing the words or theory) the absolute strength of this song (and this whole album) is the power of RESTRAINT. at 9:45 of this video, you hear the master choice.. where most bands would have upped the ante and wailed with a powerful solo.. SD just went along as if they were on a long drive... the restraint creates more power. Awesome choice!

Another SD song about taking and dealing drugs but they do it so well, don’t they? Your comment about the vibe of this album is spot on. Different than Aja but just as good and, in many people’s opinions, better. Who’s to say? Everyone has a favorite. Like the line about Miguel being in from Bogata. For what I wonder😁? Excellent analysis of the song. How about Steve Kahn’s guitar work. A thing of beauty and you mentioned the bass line. They’re just awesome. Sorry if I’m gushing.0

So much to love about Glamour Profession. Without a doubt, one of my top 5 SD tunes. The ace session guitarist Steve Khan is the son of the legendary lyricist/composer Sammy Cahn (Samuel Cohen). For me, the horns are inspired by Duke Ellington. The story, vibe and sketchy characters capture the "glamourous" LA cocaine lifestyle of the late 70's/80's. On the heels of Aja, many music critics characterized Gaucho as cold, over-polished, bleak, sterile and soul-less. When I listen, I hear a masterpiece.

Like your channel and your intelligent read on what you're hearing. I have been a Dan Fan since the 70's. Hearing Goucho for the first time was like discovering a color no one knew existed. As a musician I can tell you that there is a lot of advanced stuff going on in Glamour. The pocket that you were (and were right to be) digging late in the chorus "...under the sun" is a transition from a 'normal' chord (flat 7 add 13) at "illegal fun...under the" , to a more ethereal type of chord- a suspended or "sus" chord at "...sun". Don's vocals and general melody across this genius chord change create a very shimmering dream-like effect. You generally do not hear sus chords on your local top 40 radio station. But when you put a group of writers and musicians together like Fagan, Gadd(drums) T. Scott(horns) Brecker(t. sax) Khan(guitar) and Jackson(bass) miracles happen. I think that years from now Don Fagan will be held in high regard like fellow musicians Davis, Brubeck, Ellington, etc.

The album that this song came off of 'Gaucho' could easily been a double album. Fagen&Becker shelved some of their finest songs for some reason and did not include them. If you check on KZfaq here for 'Gaucho Demo's and Out Takes' you'll find some wonderful tunes that could easily of been hits for other lesser groups, but for SD they were throw aways
