Absolutely brilliant and totally subservient to the sound and the groove. Bernard would be proud (& perhaps he is lol). BTW, AJA would be tough for her to do because of all the extended fills, unless she could use a drumless version

"Genius" applies to creativity itself, rather than to the execution of someone else's work. Yoyoka may well be a genius. But that will be seen in the creation of her own music. What sets Yoyoka apart from so many others is her absolute capture of a musical piece. She gets to a song's soul and exposes it in the best light. Maybe there IS a spark of genius in that! After all, "genius" is inate, too.

Seen this one a couple of times now. You know, people post their drum covers of crazy metalcore and prog songs and such all the time. Sure, It's its own special kind of hard to do. Crazy time signatures, fast rolls, all very cool. But the *real* flex is keeping up that half-time shuffle for 6 minutes. That's what separates the good from the great. This is like a video resume for session work anywhere in the world.
@stantomas

agree on the 6 minute shuffle pulling it off perfectly, not easy, she is perfectly in the pocket, catches a lot of the tiny nuances on the hi hat, accents, opens, snare ghost notes,etc. and she plays the song like the original which is nice to see.

Wow! NAILED IT!!! It's the subtleties and "soft touch" in this song that make it more complex than most drummers perceive. When I did the music thing for 30 years of my life, I found the rarest of commodities was a drummer with finesse who could lay down a texture that flowed withing the music, not over it. There's "playing it" and "playing it right"... a lot of drummers don't realize this; few do (Matt Cameron, Stewart Copeland, Neil Peart, Buddy Rich, etc). YOYOKA gets it! I've watched her go from a child prodigy kicking Bonham/Zep as a 6-year-old to developing into this musical Godzilla who can play stupid pop songs to ass-kicking rock/metal to complex progressive and jazz... ALL with both authority and skills of someone two or four times her age!

I listened to 3 of your videos this week without looking at the computer. I was making lunch. Each time I stopped to look I was expecting to see a drummer who is concentrating with their eyebrows stuck together a bit, but I only saw fluid and smooth movements with zero signs of stress. Ok folks. I have the original vinyl recording of this recording from 1976. I listened to it this week due to some suggestions from YOYOKA’s upload of a glimpse of the 3rd album recording session last Saturday with Ken Okada . Bernard P is a genius - no question. 47 years have passed. YOYOKA delivers a more precise rendering of this, part in due to Aki’s brilliant isolation of her performance on the mix. I listen to drums and bass primarily in music. I challenge to anyone to define or articulate how her cover is not the same or superior to Bernard’s. Humans evolve. I have said that a session with YOYOKA and Bernard would make a Fabulous YOYOKA drum lesson Numder ##. I believe that many listeners are stuck 100% in the past and that no living person could ever replicate or better the masters of the past. Total bollocks. Simple example: Glen Gould’s Brahms’s Variations. True masters are truly satisfied when their students exceed them.

Most 14 year olds know more scales now than Hendrix. Now there is something called creativity, but that is totally different than what was being talked about here. We will see yoyoka’s creativity when she writes her own drum parts for songs that do not have drum parts. So right now you trying to compare creativity to ability. That is not a comparison that you can make at this point.

IMO Flawless. This is her bread and butter. Not only flawlessly covering a beautiful tune but adding subtle changes that enhance the tune. She certainly knows her way around a shuffle-Rosanna, Fool in the Rain, 50 ways to leave your lover and now this. 🎶 Lucky us!😊 But I am biased.

My new favorite cover of Yoyoka. One of, if not my all time favorites of Steely Dan. Played to perfection. She rides that pocket just as well as Pretty Purdy.

In the pocket. WAY in the pocket. She's so into the music. Steely Dan is the Everst of pop music. How's the view, Yoyoka? Subbed!

Excellent feel, the shuffle is spot on, the tiny nuances of open/close hi hat, snare ghost notes, and her whole presentation of a tough tune to "copy". also love how she plays the song. May i suggest some Gino Vannelli tunes, he always had the best drummers and more intricate beats- Brother to Brother, Seek and you shall Find, Night walker, Apaloosa as examples. Keep up the great work, would love to see you live someday! (64 yr old drummer here still learning!)

Those quarter note opening hats during the chorus is so much harder than it sounds. Look at that foot camera 🙌. Chops and speed are cool and all, but drummers know it's so so hard to FEEL the shuffle like this. You are the best Yoyoka.
