I’ve been a Steely Dan fan since the very first time I heard them in the mid 70’s. Such a great mix of genres with this band. Rock, jazz, blues, folk, progressive, even classical. These guys could do it all. Walter and Donald certainly knew how to put together the finest collection of top notch musicians, and were so meticulous about the arrangement and sound quality of each track, that they just couldn’t miss. Fantastic band, and obviously my all time favorite. ♥️✌🏼😎

Yes, and Chevy Chase was their drummer up there when they were in a band together called The Leather Canary...The song is about a drug bust up there after being ratted out by a female friend of theirs to Local Prosecutor G. Gordon Liddy (Daddy Gee) prior to his infamous Watergate days.

This is not about high school. It's about Bard college (the William and Mary of the north). There was a drug raid. The college kids were set up, but Bard bailed out the students. However, they left Fagan's girlfriend in jail since she wasn't a student (she's the one who gives half of a 69 goodbye). The whistle refers to the whistle for the grads to come for commencement, but Fagan won't go. He wants to take his girlfriend to Guadalajara, so she won't be prosecuted.

Nearly every Steely Dan song is among my favorite Steely Dan tunes. But there are a few that are above all others. This is one of them. "My Old School" tells a great story of Fagen and Becker's past in college while incorporating nearly every instrument in the studio. The great funky guitar solo was courtesy of Jeff "Skunk" Baxter, who went on to be an integral part of the Doobie Brothers and a noted Defense Department consultant on missile defense systems. If you want to hear another great guitar rockers by The Dan, try "Don't Take Me Alive" and "Kid Charlemagne," both off of the "Royal Scam" album featuring Larry Carlton on lead guitar.

Happy New Year, Asia and BJ !!! I'm a little behind but am glad to catch you in the New Year with Steely Dan. This song is one of favorites. But here is are a few suggestion to keep things groovy baby as BJ says. Steely Dan - TIME OUT OF MIND. It has backing vocals from Michael McDonald, who was a member of the group at one time. The song is strict, tight, and just jazzy enough for chair dancers like Asia. Next up, Alicia Bridges - I LOVE THE NIGHTLIFE. A one-time hit from the disco era that is sassy and burns slow. And finally, Rufus featuring, Chaka Khan. The album cut of YOU GOT THE LOVE or the Soul Train video are best. The funk is as full and thick as Miss Khan's hips. And her vocals are on point. I keep missing you in the live chats but I'll get there. I'm out. And enjoy

Y’all are late to the party, but it’s good to see you catching up. These guys are sooooo far beyond what would be considered “high instrumental mastery” today. And if you listen closely you can hear Michael McDonald vocals when he was a part of the group. But Donald Fagan is a master musician. This stuff is timeless.

The "Old School" referred to in this song is Bard College in Annendale, New York, where Donald Fagen and Walter Becker met. The song is at least partially inspired by an event that occurred at Bard, where both Becker and Fagen, along with their girlfriends, were arrested in a pot raid on a party that was orchestrated by an ambitious young District Attorney named G. Gordon Liddy. Yes same guy that was one of the men arrested in watergate buglaries.

I don't know who the girl was who wound up in the county jail, but I knew older guys that smoked with them after selling it to them. Here's a song that raises the timeless question that extends way back past Salome: is it worse when your girlfriend cheats on you, or when she ends up getting caught turning tricks for money that she doesn't even need? What a pleasant surprise. Steely Dan has been my favorite band for almost forty years. There's actually a little history or SD trivia with this song and they usually close with it when playing live....I just can't remember all the details to it right this second and don't want to speculate lol. It was nice to see Asia get into the song early and then spoke of it having a vibe. If you like this song check out: Do It Again, Babylon Sisters, Kid Charlemagne, Bodhisattva. These guys stopped touring in 1975 and were all about the music. Their next three (or 4 depending who you ask) albums, Katy Lied, The Royal Scam and especially Aja, as far as real, true musicianship are as good as it gets - the fourth album I mentioned, Gaucho, was kinda split with awesomeness and then maybe not so much. They knew they (Walter Becker and Donald Fagen) were parting ways after that album, so, they might have rushed some stuff. Thanks again. Be good to each other. Craig

Dan was so Steely. I wouldn't mind going to visit Rose Avenue, my elementary school again, I had memories of 25 cent missile pops and 35 cent It's Its (they are made in San Francisco) and being in chorus in 3rd grade, dressed up at He-Man in 1st grade and splitting my pants walking the beam in 2nd grade. Mrs. Chrisman in Kindergarten, Mrs. Harrington in 1st grade, Mrs. Sanders in 2nd grade, and Mrs. Caskey in 3rd. She was an awesome teacher. I went to Coleman F. Brown for 4th, 5th, and half of 6th grades. 4th, I had Mary Crabtree, 5th, I had her husband, Gary Crabtree and he taught me the lesson of never calling teachers by their first name, it's always Mrs. or Mr. then their last name. 6th, I had Sarah Lawrence and Brian Scott Sordo, we got fake money for good behavior and grades and traded it for toys and trinkets. My track aka Track B was the first one to head to the newly built Elizabeth J. Ustach Middle School (she was still alive, usually they would build schools posthumously after a teacher/educator would pass away). So, half of 6th-8th grades I was there and graduated in 1994. Then went to Beyer High all four years, graduated in 1999, they played Prince and the Revolution's "1999" song at sober grad night. after that, went to four colleges: a local junior one, then Merced Junior College, then Valley College, then Boston Reed College in Lathrop, California. I tell you, you can get sick of going to school haha, I excelled at the didactic portion. There's my educational history.
