This song gets everyone moving. Big part of me being a kid, sitting in the back as my mum drove us all around listening to the radio. True story: my mum was a single mum with two girls and we didn’t have a lot of money, but you could have fooled me as my mum has the richest imagination. She would yell “radio time” since we couldn’t afford one at home, so she would load us all into the car and we’d have sing-a-long to the radio mini-road trips, stop at some park for a picnic lunch she had made and it’s still one of the best memories I have. Shout out to all the single mums hustling with their imaginations....you are the best!

Steely Dan was so far ahead of their time. Their greatness was underappreciated by most... including myself.

I wouldn't trouble yourself about Steely Dan being "underappreciated.' They were always one of the top bands with massive hits and massive appeal.
@muzikkification4 жыл бұрын
@@tswrench I think they were referring to their innovation rather than popularity
@tswrench4 жыл бұрын
@@muzikkification -- Really? If that were the case, then they should have been more selective with their verbiage. Nonetheless, 'underappreciated greatness' in any sense is not something correctly applied to the response the band has received over the last 50 years. It sounds like the kind of thing a millennial would say. Steely Dan didn't innovate the melding of rock, soul and jazz, they just happened to do it very well--some would say better than most.

I believe Steely Dan was inducted into the Rock and Roll HOF. So, someone appreciated them enough to put them into the Hall of Fame even though the mainstream music world at the time they were inducted had their "WTF?" surprised moment as the then pop music people didn't even know who they were for the most part!

The used the top musicians of the day to realize their music. Background vocals included Michael McDonald, Valerie Simpson, Clydie King, Patti Austin. The had the brilliant Bernard "Pretty" Purdie on drums on many cuts. The guitarists were people like Hugh McCraken, Jeff Beck, Jeff "Skunk" Baxter...and on and on. Fantastic players. Many times they would splice the best bits from each player to create a single instrument track. Becker and Fagen were perfectionists.

This is easily one of the best songs I've ever heard in my life. The lyrics, beat, melody, everything is just perfect.

I used to listen to "Aja" in my 75 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme on 8 track tape. I was going to college at Memphis State University aka University of Memphis in 1977.

You rock!! Of course you heard this before. It's legendary. My brother turned me on to Steely Dan in the 70's. He passed away suddenly 8 months ago at 62 years old and I'm sitting here crying watching you loving it. So bittersweet. Celebrate this song.

No kidding, because there really aren't that many Steely Dan reactions on KZfaq, and I've been starving for them.

Joe Day it’s such a great reaction band. People can’t categorize it easily, but they know it’s good.

Steely Dan is the BEST!!! I’ve listened to them since the 70s. I live in Los Angeles, I’m African American and have seen them in concert 8 times! I introduced my son to them and he loves them too...and my son’s a jazz singer!

Another cool story about this song (other than M McDonald's backing vocals) is Jay Graydon's guitar solo. About 7 other studio guitarists had tried to nail it, including Walter Becker himself. They called Jay and in an 8hr session, he got it. Left the studio, Walter and Dan tell him, "Great, thanks". Next time Jay hears it, it is on the radio. Jay says, "oh cool, they used it for the single". Had no idea that was the take.

When I was growing up in Milwaukee back in the 70's, I would hear this song on the radio station many times!!! I would thought this was a black group!!! When I was in the military, I started to listen to rap and De La Soul use this sample (Eye Know) and I usually listen to the original song and if I like it I would download the music!!! I was freaking stunned to find out that the duo were both white (true fact that Chevy Chase almost was part of this group)!!! No matter what the color of the skin as long as you make great music and have the ability to make people sing and dance then you're doing very great!!! Music as no color and to this day thanks to rap music and their sample. Steely Dan is one of the many favorite bands that I love back in the day!!!

Watch the making-of video. Donald Fagen just wanted a straight bass line w/ no slapping or popping, but Chuck Rainey threw it in on the first take and when Donald heard it on the play back he told him to just play it how he liked.

Steely Dan is such a versatile band! Their sound was so transcending, that they crossed many musical styles and genres. Whatever style of music a listener desired, if could be found on one of the Steely Dan tracks. 💜💜🎤🎤🎶🎶🎹🎹🎼🎼

While you're doing Steely Dan, you should check out "Josie" or "Deacon Blues" from the same album (AJA) or Pretzel Logic. I love the way you embrace the music you're listening to. Good job man. Greetings from the UK :-)
