Probably justified. Purists are never impressed by them, but in my experience purists are usually those to whom music is part-art and part-club-badge - which I think is the wrong way to look at music - if it's good, you know it's good, irrespective of genre purity or otherwise.

Fagen came into a local club in NY back in the late 80s where I was playing with my rock/jazz/world beat band. He sat at the bar trying to be incognito, which was impossible. We prompted him up to the piano, and he played those first two bass notes and chords. We knew exactly where he was going. A great night. He hung out for a bit; then left...

Was he hammered? They rarely toured due to Donald’s anxiety issues. I knew several of his studio musicians from early 80’s, Don used to hit the bong 3 times before any show and again every 15-20 minutes during show he’d sneak backstage for a hit. Without it, he’d freeze up, couldn’t perform.
@rabukan5842 Жыл бұрын
@@MichaelM-to4sg He wasn't hammered because he played it perfectly, and seemed to enjoy it. We talked a little after he played, but then he said he had to go. He shook our hands, then bounced out. Would love to have hung out all night, but you take what you can get :)

Donald Fagen has stated that the song is about time travel. The term "pretzel logic" is usually defined as twisted reasoning, reasoning that doesn't make sense.
@qthelost4 жыл бұрын
@Ned Hill I agree. I think Fagen was just giving a simple answer when he said "Time Travel." But there is usually nothing simple when it comes to finding the meaning behind Steely Dan songs. To me their songs always feel like inside jokes and stories that only they know, and they give the public just a little bit of information. That's what makes their songs so fascinating lyrically.
@preciousroihomeshoppingnet79084 жыл бұрын
@@qthelost "Simple" maybe, but literally true...its a Science Fiction song. "I stepped up on the platform..." is literally meant to be a time travel platform like a Star Trek transporter pad.

@Ned Hill It definitely has the overall vibe of some guys sitting around on a NY corner or barroom BSing over some pretzels, and they tend to be pretty specific with their orchestration and choice of style for a given song. Last verse REALLY makes me think it's a bit like some guys talking about 'the old days' and taking that to a tongue-in-cheek extreme in the rest of the song.

"Groovy" is exactly the right word for Steely Dan.
@vaportrails79434 жыл бұрын
As far as the lyrics go, it's all about what he says in the chorus, "I'm dying to be a star". So it's kind of a commentary on the life or aspirations of entertainers, vs. the hard realities. Steely Dan always had a dry, sarcastic view of the world.

This song is one of my favorite concert memories. On Sunday April 21, 1974, my wife and I were standing in line outside the U. of Toledo sports arena waiting for our first Steely Dan concert. All the windows were open and suddenly we heard the band inside play "Pretzel Logic" from beginning to end during their sound check. When they played it again 2 hours later to a live audience Donald Fagen left his piano during the long instrumental outro and stood center stage conducting the band like a symphony maestro. Had to live off the memories of that one night for more than 19 years because Becker & Fagen refused to tour again until Aug. 1993.

I should say, you young guys are lucky. I first discovered Steel Dan when I was 15. (this album) Over the years I sat patiently between albums never knowing when the next would come out. In those days that meant a visit to the record shop and flip through the albums, there was one period we endured a 20 years gap between releases. (that was a lot of visits) The secret to Steely Dan is they never settled for, "that will be good enough" It had to be exactly right. One way to achieve that was, they would identify the best session musicians around and from that lot they selected the best of the best and then they squeesed every drop of talent from everyone involved.

In my opinion there no Pop groups today that can musically hold a candle to Steely Dan. Sadly I think most modern music (Hip Hop included) have simply lost the plot. I heard a session singer said recently, most of the Pop music after 1975 I tend to loose interest in. I find there is so much more music quality in the old stuff, I'm afraid the new stuff is boring. 😊🏴👍

What we would define as pop disappeared after the mega eras of Prince and Michael Jackson. Don't forget; even with all that machinery, bands STILL had to be able to play an instrument and compose something that would catch the ear. Now, technology IS the instrument.
@spork11254 жыл бұрын
Disagree. It's out there. Also it depends on how you define pop. You can't compare contemporary bands based on records sold, as one would for a group like Steely Dan. Not to take away from your point though. SD was one of a kind. Try listening to Vulfpeck. Sold out Madison Square garden, so, you know, at least a little popular. . Definitely quirkier and less "pop" than SD but so funky. Start with the EP Mit Peck.

King Of The World and Bodhisatva are awewome. I've been a Steely Dan fan since their first album came out. They have such a great sound. I saw you reacting to this song and HAD to watch it!! Well done...so great to see a fan 💜

"is this about time travel ?" I'm a Dan fan since they started, and it took me years to work that out ! The line 'I stepped up on the platform' - the platform is supposed to be part of some kind of time transporter.

There aren’t any songs by them that I dislike.

They were simply unable to write a song that is bad. They just don't know how to do it. ( not all that versatile I guess)

@@1nelsondj Not my favorite in the studio, Yog, but SD re-invented the tune for their live concerts, and it's a beast.

I have that song on 8 track, cassette, LP and mpeg lol. The 8 track doesn’t work anymore but I just can’t throw it away. I used to roll in my 70 Camero with the windows down and Low Rider blasting, great song.

This is one of Steely Dan's best tunes... smoothest of the smooth jazz. 2nd is Steely Dan's "Showbiz Kids."
