lp.constantcon... Donald Fagen Describes Painful Last Meeting With A Very Ill Walter Becker
Losing a long time band-mate can be as painful as saying goodbye to ones spouse. There's always much history there, trust, understanding, discovery etc.
Donald Fagen opened up to Rolling Stone magazine about his last meeting with his, then, very sick band-mate Walter Becker who we lost on September 3rd of this year (2017). He said as soon as he walked into Becker's New York apartment he knew the guitarist was struggling adding, “When I put a chair next to the bed, he grabbed my hand. It was something he had never done ever before. And we had a great talk and, you know, he was listening to hard bop - his wife had put on Dexter Gordon records. He was very weak but he was still very funny. I'm really glad I had those hours."
Fagen says he wasn't interested in calling the post-Becker band Steely Dan. His choice was Donald Fagen and the Steely Dan Band but the promoters insisted calling it Steely Dan for obvious commercial reasons. Fagen also said that Becker was not interested in recording a follow up to 2003's “Everything Must Go.” Saying that from 2011 when Becker was really feeling it everything changed in his personality - he didn't have energy.
Lastly that lawsuit against Becker's estate on the Steely Dan control. Fagen clarity's, "Decades ago," he says, "when we started the band, Walter and I had a contract, and it was really a simple thing that a lot of bands have - if someone resigns or is fired or dies, they sell their rock & roll stock back to the company. So we signed this thing and it ended up being that Walter and I were the remaining partners...50/50 partners, and the idea was that if somebody dies the other guy would essentially run the band and take control of the band, so we're just trying to defend that contract."

I love Steely Dan. I’m so blessed to have seen Steely Dan live before Becker got ill back in April of this year. Becker just seemed so happy and full of energy when I saw him. I was so shocked when Steely Dan got up on stage at Classic West and I didn’t see Becker. Would have never believed he would go so quickly. Rest In Peace Walter.

Becker was entertaining as hell during his storytime monologues during live performances of "Hey Nineteen". So sad we'll never see the likes of the Fagen-Becker duo again.

I was fortunate to begin listening to them since back to the early '70's. I don't need to speak to how great it all was, as their music can clearly speak for itself ! Not only for itself, but how subtle the nuance, that touched feeling's, or brought back memories, for so many of us ! Now for some of us, as much as we hate to admit it, are in the Autumn of our lives, and just as the leaves on the trees begin to fade, so are we ! Life goes by so quickly. Scripture say's our life here, is but a vapor ! If that tells you anything ! Sadly missed ! R.I.P. ♥️🥀♥️

Im still heartbroken about Walter being gone. I cannot begin to explain what it is like when you see a loved one ill and you can not do anything about it but put on some sort of brave face that you know that person can see through. I still feel the same about that lawsuit. Steely Dan is now Donald Fagen as per their contract. Peace and healing light to every one involved.

Can’t believe I’m just now today (Xmas 2017) hearing about Becker’s death. Speechless. Steely Dan, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder and Prince were the soundtrack of my youth. Spending my summers at the neighborhood swimming pool, I remember songs like Do It Again, Ricki, Show Biz Kids, Pretzel Logic, Josie, FM, Hey Nineteen and Babylon Sisters seemed to be always on. Steely Dan, never a bad album. About them not making anymore records, when I bought Everything Must Go I knew that was it. And what a fine way to go out.

Its really impossible to say what was the best song Steely Dan ever created ... there were so many great ones with some epic musicality. But for me, in a very close race, I have got to go with Aja. Walter moved to Maui and married the mom of a couple of my surfing buddies, who herself was great surfer. Juxtaposed to Walter, his wife was a tall, ripped, super tough tomboy surf mom. I always thought they made the oddest couple. Having grown up on Steely Dan, it was cool to have Walter in our community, however, he rarely came down to the beach and didn’t much like all the surf bum kids riffling his stash 🤣

It is always difficult when the people left behind have to scramble to make sure they have the same lifestyle before their loved one died. I pray that Walter did set things up for his family and they are provided for handsomely. Royalties help a lot of musicians and family members a financial $$$$ that they can depend upon. It is amazing that "The Beatles Corporation" has maintained cooperative in all matters of finances. I think most bands when starting are in it for the love of making music. Realities of the business side comes into play once they have been together for a while aka successful. I had SD greatest hits album at one time. I did enjoy there music but I never attended any of their concerts though. The courts and the lawyers will make something happen. I hope it makes everyone happy!!!!

Unfortunately, musicians, or most of them end up forgetting they were youngsters with dreams and hopes in common, going throught dire times together and reaping success together until addictions or money come in between. Then they become strangers, and they kick the band mate out or end up in lawsuits. Sad but common situation (Syd Barret, Scott Weiland, for example), the camaraderie and affection turns into workplace conflicts . When they signed that contract they probably didn't have the future in mind: marriage, family, children. So that contract leave their families defenceless, hence the lawsuits. Think through first before making a contract when you start your band, guys. Nothing is guaranteed.

I would want the kind of success that they'd acquired. Respect among your peers & still be able to go out to stock the fridge at the grocers without being noticed (for the most part). What a life they must've lived. And be studio rats, perfecting your vision ? With the best players at your side, if Zappa hadn't already wrangled them away from you already, that is.... 😎Lucky guys, man. I wanna be Walter Becker or Donald Fagen when I grow up. Becker and Fagen as a songwriting team had the musical knowledge and the artistic vision like no other before or since - including Lennon and McCartney. L&M had great artistic vision but didn't have all the musical tools...although McCartney would towards the end. Much of the musicality for the Beatles came from George Martin.

He was a dope shooter on and off for quite a while. If you watched him he sad publicly stated no alcohol, because he had ton Watch his liver. I have seen them any many times. First time when all the original members were in the band. If Walter wasn't so sick i would have loved to see another Steely Dan record. I won't complain. Only 10 comments on this? Very informative to those like me, curious about the future of SD. Not that I expect any forthcoming issue other than all the “best of” and “tributes” to ooze to the surface. Once upon a time, major media considered such events (oh muh gud uleh, hats even having to use the E word to upsell the social impact of the situation) MUCH more important than than the latest reboot of a reboot of a redux of a movie (surprised nobody has created a euphemism for that) based.on.a.mediocre.comic.book.(or 40 year old saga that already ran its course) In this gleeful day and age, drones are not airborne; they are surrounding YOU, texting and Bambusing, if not the road pirates. I beat a $900 citation for a lousy $30, ask me how.

I don't doubt the veracity of the contract. But I do wonder what Walter Becker could even have done to carry on with the band had he been the one to outlive Fagen, seeing how Fagen was the lead singer. It seems to me as though the band would have been of little to no value to Becker, whereas to Fagen it has a great deal of value. Also, seeing as Fagen and Becker decided in the seventies to turn the group into a studio-only act under their joint direction; I fail to see how the others weren't effectively fired and, accordingly, entitled to thier piece of the entity. Bear in mind Fagen's language as quoted above: "remaining" partners. How exactly did the others become exciced from the agreement?

Having a relationship with someone you had artistic ties with is difficult and I'm not even a "successful" musician. I imagine , if you were truly human (all too human Fredriech Nietsche), the financial ambiguity would come about if strength was in excess enough.Mostly I'd be in sync with my artistic cohort, ---my partner, my catalyst, my kindred spirit. It might be the amount of money that divides people into different levels of disassociation. If I were on my deathbed I wouldn't contaminate the conversation with distractions of gold. I'd tell the people that I love, that I love them and reduce myself to an atheistic but aware being, with a advanced frontal lobe.

Just when It seemed they were DOA, they revived theirself and I enjoyed seeing them three times with Everything Must Go and Two against Nature coming out between then and the final concert I was able to see in 2014..They just kept coming. "A Steely Dan Bedtime Story" Once upon a time, there was a king, named Richard, who ruled Mizar. He fell madly in love with his darling, Rose. After a short engagement, they were married by a Deacon in a blue suit. They honeymooned near the caves of Altamira and did it again quite frequently without a fez. Night by night, it was a countdown to ecstasy. Soon, they were home at last, and in the months and years to follow, would have a castle full of show biz kids. Their first kid, a boy, was named Charlemagne. Later, daughters, Josie and Peg, would beautify the castle with their French twists. Rikki, their youngest, was a mathematics prodigy who never lost track of her numbers. The parents were strict with their daughters, but the girls didn't seem to care. The family would vacation by carriage to the sea and when the children got too loud, King Richard would say, "keep it down, just until we get out of town." During their holiday, the family would sit under a banyan tree and watch the sun go down on the crimson tide. They let the children play up on the hill near the black cows. The king, however, had a mistress at this seaside Eldorado resort. When confronted by Rose, Katy lied and said there was nothing to it. Katy was only nineteen at the time. Rose knew the fix was in. Later, Rose told King Richard that she knew of the affair and was planning on a trip to Haiti for a divorce. She said, "I can't cry anymore while you run around." Upon hearing this news, King Richard summoned his therapist, Dr. Wu. After a lengthy discussion about the king's infidelity, Dr. Wu responded, "the things you think are useless I can't understand." Rose, still reelin' from this news demanded, "I want to know everything you did." King Richard confessed to an affair with Katy's sister, Pearl. He defended himself by saying, "it was just a fling with a couple of skinny girls." King Richard hastily had his family return to Castle Bravo, coincidentally, at the changing of the guard. He met with his generals to discuss the expansion of his kingdom to new frontiers. He told them he wanted to be king of the world. Rose, however, took a gift from the king, a pair of green earrings, and threw them in the moat. She realized that she had been royally scammed. King Richard went to Rose's bedroom and told her it would never happen again, but she replied, "after what you've done, only a fool would say that." She gave him the goodbye look before she lit the candle and put a lock upon the door. King Richard, in a rage, threatened harm to their children by drowning them in the moat when he said, "I'll throw back the little ones." At that very moment, there was fire in the hole as the castle came under ambush by battle apples! King Richard became suicidal and thought about taking his life with a gun. His last words were, "Don't Take Me Alive!" The day after the king's demise, Rose had lunch with Gina, her best friend. They drank kirschwasser from a shell. Gina advised Rose to sell her home and move to a place called the Custerdome. The next day, Rose put a sign in front of the castle that read: Everything Must Go.

Donald Fagan is too much of a perfectionist not Becker . And really when it comes to music , trying to write, arrange and record a song every which way , you don't always chose the one that is the best . for example the eponymous song Aja could have been a masterpiece . But the last 2 or 3 minutes of it Fagan or someone is making these weird "theremin"(a electronic instrument made in Russia mid 20th century) sounds like those strange sounds used in 1950's sci fi movies .

Does he live in China? Michael doesn’t sound like a Chinese name or has the US become a police state now? Sad loss for the music industry and I only found out today a year later having been a fan since the 70’s
