Super review Tim!!! Waited a LONG time for this one. So long that my original credit card used to preorder expired and had to call in to give them the new number. The sound is stunning. Just preordered Katy Lied. Tim, you are our “go to” Steely Dan resource. Well done!

Great review, info and history. Thank you. I like having 33 and 45 as well as reels (when available) versions of iconic titles, 45rpm more for demoing and wowing your friends and oneself and 33 to enjoy the entirety of the title in a more cohesive listen.

Nice job. When Aja and Gaucho were being recorded, I was also working as a recording engineer and fully appreciate the gloriousness that are these albums. I lean toward Aja and the idea that Gaucho was just a tad overcooked, but only a tad. I've been enjoying the new digital releases (SACD and 24 bit downloads), Aja and CTE in particular sound great ... but it's time now to see what Chad and Bernie can do with Katy Lied and the Scam, those are the ones that I've been waiting for and the waiting is the hardest part.

I recall Tim saying he would pass on Aja, but had pre-ordered Gaucho long ago. He was always down for Gaucho, preferring it to Aja

Great review Tim! Always enjoy your extra efforts and passion to dig deeper behind the recordings of Steely Dan👍🏻 I have heard nothing but very good reviews of this UHQR. May have to splurge here in a couple of months. My real interest lies in just how the Katy Lied UHQR will turn out sonically. In the meantime I am glad the reviews are positive for Gaucho!

Excellent review! Always love your Steely Dan videos and how thorough you are. I have all their UHQR's so far and Gaucho does sound incredible. 👍 I have to say though, the most groovy (certainly the most funky) Steely Dan record is The Royal Scam. :) That's one I'm most looking forward to anyway, besides Katy Lied. 🍻

Great to hear that Gaucho UHQR sounds great. I've picked up all the other Steely Dan UHQR's previously, and I've been pleased with all of them except Pretzel Logic. By cutting the top end on Pretzel Logic, they screwed that one up. I'll have to pick up Gaucho, and I'm really looking forward to the Royal Scam.

As Gaucho is my favorite of their work, looks like I'll have to pick this up when I can. I found an OG RL pressing at a local shop a year or so ago, nice and clean, so I've been waiting to hear specifically what Tim had to say about it.

Love seeing the 3 Otaris at 7:03. And The Ampex ATR at 8:15. They were using great machines! Not to mention the Stacks of tape boxes! Tape Boxes are like porn to me! (Yes I know I need help!😂)

People complain about the $150 cost but I think it’s because they don’t fully understand what they are getting or how good they are.Additionally early pressings of this album if you can find them in VG VG ++ are going for $95

Tim - great review. Glad to see you happy with the results. Especially with your “obsession” over Steely Dan. I picked up the Aja UHQR and I had a similar conclusion - the UHQR is better than a clean OG - but just barely. But since I am “obsessive” about Aja the $150 was well spent, since in my view Aja is worth obsessing over. For the rest of the catalogue I plan on sticking with the OG pressings, many thanks to you the pressings I have sound great. Thanks again.

I'm pretty much of similar mind, except I have to have the Katy Lied UHQR also, just was too much part of my late teens growing up. Pretzel Logic, Katy lied and Aja were their prime IMHO.

Another lovely presentation Tim! 👍 it is *BY FAR* my only real favourite of Steely Dan. To me, it is just completely another level of brilliance compared to all their others. I just wanted to ask you... Do you hear any/much difference between the original MD1 and the MD2 pressings? And, if so, what would those be? Thanks!

To be honest, they both sound great but my MD2 has a bit of surface noise which puts the MD1 in the winner circle for me.

This has always been my favorite SD title and naturally had to pick up this version. Already have the Aja UHQR. The tracks on Gaucho haven't been as overplayed as those on Aja so always feels like a fresh listen.

if the AP UHQR was based off Ludwig’s mastered tape, then is the improvement really that much?

We get the benefit of the 45rpm cut as well as the Clarity (dead silent for me) vinyl. There is more in the soundstage, overall presence , and a certain smoothing out in the vocals of both Fagen and background vocals.

the UHQR is the definitive version, no doubt about it. The RL still sounds good, but it's no contest imho. 👍

My experience was not a dead silent noise floor… it’s not enough to send it back I guess, but I was hoping for silent. It’s one of the reasons I bought it because I had a difficult time finding a quiet original 😑

Nice review of the album My problem with Steely Dan is it’s hard for me to call them a band The Stones and Beatles were bands Steeley Dan were session musicians different every record That’s not a band!!! Fagan and Becker were the only consistent players To me that’s not what you’d call a band!!

The sound engineer must be a deaf person. They should not sell these. It’s a waste of money. I will never buy from that record company no more because they obviously don’t care about high quality sound or even worse have no clue what that is.
