In this video I show you how to strip, clean, paint and restore a steering box. I also go into the truth of trying to fit Britpart bearings and some of the realities of parts supply problems.

I did mine recently and had the same problem, big old gap at the bottom end. Used loads of shims to sort it but it still leaks. Quite how Land Rover mass produced these steering boxes back in the day is anyone's guess - I'm glad it wasn't my job!

Thanks for the comment, much appreciated. Yeah its not the greatest bit of mass produced engineering. If it were my land rover I'd be trying to graft something modern in there.

I’d rather have a system that is repairable rather than not! With a Land Rover everything is accessible and repairable unlike modern vehicles. The other beauty is you can have parts made if needed. I use high grade lithium complex grease on bearing such bearing to aid the assembly process and also to prevent high friction issues which works well. I did drive my Series 3 daily and the steering box in particular gets used quite heavily as you can imagine! Britpart parts are rubbish and I avoid them totally where possible. It’s worth time and money looking else where. Good job done! Find a local mechanist who can make parts if needed.

Thanks Jim, yeah this was a tricky one as the owner was getting a little "spend shy" at this point. I would have liked to put some more money into the steering box really.

@@lozl Have a look at Church House Classics....Richard. He also had a FAFF but nailed it by thinking it over. That takes up a lot of my time. End result...smiles and happiness to accomplish such jobs.

@@JimJamJammer Wow he has a lot of land rover videos. Good videos too. I hadn't heard of him before. I've often found there to he a lot of good help out there when it comes to this land rover project. Its refreshing having done projects where there is no help at all.

Hey Loz! Love your videos. What do you use to spray your components on this and the engine rebuild? Thanks!

Hi thanks for the kind comment. You're not gunna like it..... the black painted parts have had hammerite. I find hammerite to be an awful paint to brush paint... its useless. But when thinned and sprayed it works very well. My reliant scimitar chassis was sprayed with hammerite well over 10 years ago and is still looming very good. The engine was an engine enamel I bought from ebay to get the colour correct. That seems to have hardened up to a really nice toigh finish.

I’ve stripped two of these series boxes, both had failed thrust races each end and both damaged the ball screw ….. which you can’t get hold of🤬

I've found getting hold of parts to be an absolute nightmare, specifically parts of a known and good quality, I first discovered this problem with the V8 engine rebuild. It's a pain in the arse! Thabks for the comment. Much appreciated.

@@lozl there’s a firm in Birmingham that can make the steering box worm n screw. But I understand the ‘engineer’ that does them has poor health and as such hasn’t been able to run the machines for a long time- I’ve been trying to get the parts for 9 months . A replacement column n box ex Britpart is £600 near as no matter vs £250 for the column screw. 🤬

Honestly, of all the projects I have done over the last several years, finding good quality parts has always been the biggest challenge

Thank you for sharing the issue you had with the replacement bearing races. I spent hours reassembling the box and each time had that 2-3mm gap. Followed your solution and reused the originals. I did use the new ball bearings. Worked great. Hopefully this saves someone else from wasting their Sunday.

@@simonkorzec9315 Cheers Simon, glad it was of help to you. I wish I could have got the proper kit in time. Ideally it wanted a whole new steering shaft but those are pretty tricky to find. Thanks again for taking the time to comment
