Is a larger diameter steering wheel better than a smaller diameter wheel?
I just did a 10,000 mile road trip in my Xterra with my new NRG 320mm steering wheel. The new wheel is considerably smaller than the factory wheel and it felt A LITTLE sketchy on long drives. Even the slightest touch on the wheel and it felt like the truck was going to swerve into the next lane.
Also, the suede wheel cover is nice, but the dye bled onto my hands. Not cool.
Decided to swap out the 320mm wheel for a larger 350mm wheel with leather cover.
Why do I need a quick release wheel on my truck? Why not?!

Ha. Wish that were true. I have three cars with the quick release and sometimes I forget to bring my wheel out when I just need to back one of them out or move them.

Great review, I’m definitely gonna go 350mm as I prefer the stability. My current stock wheel feels like a steering bus wheel so hopefully this helps things be a bit more sharp.

I did an update to this video where I compare the deep dish wheel with a flatter wheel. The Momo is my favorite. I run it on all my project cars. Much nicer having the steering wheel a little further away

Ive been in the off-road and desert racing community since 2003... quick release steering wheels are in pretty much every race truck and in most serious off-road vehicles, the air bag is one of the first things to be removed. On the trail it can be more of a liability because if you do any serious wheeling, there’s a possibility it will deploy when you DONT want it to. You can also be injured by the airbag if your face is in the wrong place. In tight spaces where you’re trying to choose your line, you may have your face really far forward. What if you hit a rock or take a hard hit and the airbag deploys and you’re too close to it?

@@rayregnogarage Bags are historically unsafe in general, even in normal traffic. The charge is too unpredictable, and it has fucked up several people, even killed some. I wasn't there when it happened though, but I've read about quite a few cases. I think I rather have my ribs broken than my brain tussled. *EDIT: Hello 4 years ago, and sorry for reviving this thread :D

If only the other wheel was 350mm and shiny leather.. the new wheel is deep dish, and I always thought deep dish wheels felt like I was driving a go kart.. and the wheel looks too far up and close to the chest.. in an accident chances are definitely there for hiring the wheel with the chest

What shifter knob is that? And did you do any other modification to the stick shift? Also if I get an Xterra will the stock steering have a telescoping steering wheel?

This is the shift knob I used. Looks like they only have blue at the moment. It's a universal knob and comes with adapters. No modification needed to the shifter. amzn.to/3cXa86O As far as the wheel, no it doesn't telescope. Only tilt

Hey great video, im getting a smaller wheel i just prefer them, my existing standard wheels 367mm and im not sure to go with 350 or a 320mm, im just local driving mostly, was it your 320mm significantly heavier than your standard wheel or would the best compromise be the 350mm? Thanks 👍🏼

I didn’t notice a weight difference. I just like the 350 better. Another thing to keep in mind is with that with a smaller wheel it’s harder to see your gauges.

So I'm looking to also get a aftermarket steering wheel. I'm getting the same NRG hub adapter and quick release but question is that will any brand steering wheel will fit the quick release? I'm picking up a Nardi 330mm steering wheel by the way.

As long as it has the six screw pattern. It’s pretty standard.
