You just changed my life!! I love to paint using several transparent layers doing scumblin and glazing. So because of all the alarms with oils everywhere regarding fat over lean, I've painted in acrylics for years and I can't do my best work due to the fast drying time, even with the drying time extenders. Many hugs and kisses for your help just now!!! I'm getting out my oils today!!!!!

When I first heard Stefan talk about using auto primer on MDF boards, I tried it immediately. I love them! They end up costing me about a dollar per board when I was done spray painting them! I have a great hardware/lumber store by me that makes the cuts for free, From a 4' x 8' board, I get a few 16" x 20", a good batch of 11" x 14" and even a couple 8" x 10". Plus I get a few scraps that I can cut at home for 5" x 7" boards. I walk to my car with around 2 dozen panels cut to size. At the same visit, I also buy a couple cans of auto primer. Stefan's tip was life-changing for me. I could go on and on, but I'd just be repeating what Stefan teaches in this podcast. I will note that auto primer may not be a good idea if you work in acrylic. If you want to paint in acrylic, then acrylic gesso on mdf board is probably a better idea.

Use MDF and put it in a frame, I rent a truck from the big box store and bring several 4 x8 sheets to my studio then saw them with a circular saw and a straight edge in any size that strikes my fancy. Our stores charge a dollar a cut and they aren't square or accurate at all, and you can't find someone to do it. I make several sizes of golden mean ratio, and several sizes of double box (twice as wide as high). I've made 30 x 48, and 24 x 72 with no problem. I cut the panels, sand them lightly, paint on both sides several coats of white exterior house paint to seal the MDF from moisture, sand that smooth with an orbital sander and then oil primer, let them sit for a month, and by then I've got an idea what to paint on them. Use a mask. Then I make my own frames with poplar wood from big box on a table saw to fit the panel. The poplar is easy to work with and has straight grain, takes paint, gilding or stain or just oil it, and doesn't warp very often. The corners are glued with Tite bond 3, they use this to put wooden boats together, then cross doweled, or some sizes I can use a Kreig tool to screw them together. Carve petroglyphs into it if you like! The dark side of this is cutting the panel to fit a frame you found at a garage sale. Buy good frames or make good frames.

Important note concerning MDF board! There are different types of mdf, you want a-a type which is sealed on both sides and is smooth, you'll just need to then seal the edges with the rustoleum too (or acrylic medium) and it'll be moisture proof. The mdf with the rough back isn't ideal (iirc thats a-c but i don't know what type 'b' is heh) but you could always seal all that too I guess, but that's getting into work/waste. You can pretty easily tell which part has that plastic sealing when you're holding it and be aware any part without sealing is subject to moisture ruining it over time.

Hi! Where do you get msg that is smooth on both sides? The closest thing that I can find is Masonite hard board at Home Depot and it is rough on one side and smooth on the other. I haven’t seen any other option that is smooth on both sides…?

Another option is to shellac Bristol Board (paper) ….the trick is to pour a thin line of shellac across the top and draw it down using either card stock paper or an old credit card . You also can do a charcoal drawing on the Bristol Board and then shellac it locking it in , and then paint . It dries in a few minutes.

My favorite surface to paint on is polycanvas. it's smooth almost like a board and it doesn't expand and contract like cotton, but it has a springy bounce to it like canvas and it has just enough texture I can do the wash and scrubbed affects I'm used to

I use canvas to hold the gesso and ground mediums, and, to additionally strengthen the panel I am using. The canvas serves only as a binder for the Gesso and ground- I never really cared for the texture of canvas, and always looked to eliminate it. My work is unique to how I make it, and the panel is part of that journey.

The only problem I have with a really smooth surface is the varnishing process. It’s not very forgiving and even if I use a roller nap, that’s extra fine for smooth surfaces. It sometimes leaves little spots. And if you brush it out, you can really see the brushstrokes and that’s using Gamvar mixture of satin and gloss to achieve a semi gloss finish.

I use XPS insulation panels as a canvas. 47" x 35" (1.5" thick) for €7. A similar size canvas in the local artshop = €80 Use a foamcutter to cut them to size or even make a round canvas.

I have about 150 , 11X14 canvas, pre treated, with a better formula all pre sanded. YOUR BOAD, recommended, I did, Really did use some of left over mason board, think that is the same as your acronym for M B F board.. Bought the Rust-Oleum Flat White Primer. Took my boards outside to spray. All went well, but then noticed all my boards had stuff on them. CLEAR Day , not windy, OH MY, then I realized when I noticed I was being stung by ground bees.. Lucky for me I am not allergic to bees . But now I have all these boards with bee parts stuck in the boards.. AH, wrote your number down . STILL NOT VERY SAVVY to using the Internet. Thank YOU.

Why do you need it smooth on both sides? I use 1/8 inch maple or birch - well sealed on both sides. Found in the flooring department of Home Depot. Will never go back to canvas again, As a new trend, people are going away with expensive, gilded frames ! I mainly work in oil glazeses, with a "raised, sculptured surface for a 3-D effect! Stefan is really good at pointing out new things and giving pointers,!

My favorite surface is true gesso. It has characteristics that are totally unique as a surface. It is the smoothest surface I have encountered with sanding between multiple coats applied. I took a materials and techniques class a few years ago, and we made our own gesso using wood boards as the substrate. I know Stephan is aware of this traditional ground for painting and recommends it as well. Not the store bought gesso. Thought I'd throw this out there for people as another alternative to canvas that is time proven.

I have head this from Stefan before, and the one question I had then as now is how long is the auto primer surface good for? Meaning, when you prime something with auto primer, you are expecting a chemical bond between the oil paint, and the primer, and then a bond between the primer and the substrate, usually metal. That bond capacity will weaken very rapidly. But most people I know will prime a bunch of panels, and may not get to all of them right away. One could end up painting over the auto primer several years down the road. Is it still good then? Well, if is good in several weeks or years, why bother priming it at all? The paint should stick just as well to the paint ready surface of the MDF. The primer is basically half adhesive and half paint. But when the adhesive cures, it is just more paint. And we apply layers of paint over dried paint surfaces often, also. One can answer this sort of issue, if it worries one, by painting as thin a coat of paint as covers, letting it set up for a month or so, then scoring the surface on a 1" grid. Apply masking tape and press down hard with a rolling pin, then tear it off. If the paint doesn't lift, you have a full bond to whatever material you used. This is a test for boats and cars, so it is more than durable enough, as Stefan points out, if it passes this test.

I sometimes paint on paper (card - 300gsm upwards), 3 coats of gesso and off you go. I absolutely hate the texture of canvas. I don't want to paint on a grid. It interferes with my brushstrokes.

I tried it with wood panel since they didn’t have MDF for some reason. It didn’t work. The grain raised and it can’t really sand since it oil primer. That’s okay. Trial and error. Cost me about $20x

How are the mdf boards hung on the wall? Do they need to be framed? I usually sell gallery wrapped splinned canvases because I don't have to frame them, the back looks clean and it usually doesn't scratch the walls
@omnesilere

I usually stick them in frames, usually ones for photos have enough room for a board since they're held by a lil piece of metal. I have also just stuck them to the walls with putty made for that purpose, they only fall once a month or so. ( j/k they haven't fallen :p )

I find it will stick if I get rid of the White BLANK, as you may see Stephan Baumann in his pod cast do, and other artist do. Our cheaper White canvas flat , have the fabric showing that I seen in art show, that catches my eye first, and not what they painted. If I just sandpaper my boards, I will loose the strength ,behind my painting to last year later, Cold , Humidity, and heat in the USA affects our painting, in how well they had been pre treated.

I stopped using canvases a while ago.. mostly just because I don't really like the soft moving surface. I much prefer panels. I can't stand painting on super smooth surfaces tho. I like the tooth.. the feel of it.. the look of it... I just like it. I also discovered that the art supply isle is NOT the place to get you panels. Instead... head to the kids section. You will find the same panels for literally half the price... brushes too... but I pay right around $1 per panel at my local Walmart and 54 cents a tube for my apple barrel paints. Can't beat it. Know tho, if you do pick up some apple barrel paint... it will Not mix how you expect. It doesn't mix the same as other brands. The individual colors are fine, but they don't mix well.

I have some Apple Barrel too, I did notice and Baumann also mentioned Acrylic had changed their formula. Many artists are noticing their painting s are chipping. I have not noticed, because I use a bit of Raw Egg yolk to my paint. I also add some Multi Surface "folk Art " paint, yes more expensive, but I add to my Apple barrel." We have a " Sendex "food store that also serves food. Their containers with a cover are great to seal. I am sure DOLLAR TREE has some too. I use Parchment paper to size to fit inside, wet it , and apply my paint, (without the egg additive) I keep a water spray bottle to keep my paint from drying out, then when I am not in the room I put the lid back on. Stores I noticed are not supplying as often at Walmart. I take the bottlers farther in the back. Older ones , even in Grocery stores keep older cans to expire in the front. TOOTH paste to whatever all so. Just some added thoughts. My 11X14" flat board panels 6 in a pack at Walmart instead of 3 in Children's works fine. I do sand down my canvas. and yes, I do resurface, and use a Fine grit sand paper, which does leave some tooth to the canvas, but I do it even vertical , and horizontal. then add another layer, after 3-4 layers my boards are stiffer, and still have a bit of tooth, but does not leave the painting when light is on it CHEAP Material backing showing. I went to a show. the artist did really fine work, but when the light shown on all his work, My EYES were first noticing the cheap material underneath. and not the ART. IT IS WHAT You Want the Viewer attracted to First , that is important.

@@janaiart5065 interesting.. I've not had any issues with my paintings cracking... but I apply a healthy coat or 3 of Liquidex Satin finish Varnish... it does cause some added glare, but it results in a smooth surface finish and a much more polished "professional" looking final product. I've never tried adding egg yolk, tho I know the old masters used to use it when mixing paints. I've used Folk Art paints as well.. tho not for a few years now.. I only put out a small amount of paint at a time.. no more than I'll use before it dries.. for the most part I don't like adding water to my paints and 80% of the time paint with a dry brush .. unless doing thin layers of mist or something of course. 11×14 is a good size... but a little big for me ... I like the 9×12s best tho admittedly most of my paintings are 8×10"... I get bored with a piece.. if I can't finish it in 2 to 3 3 to 4 hour sittings, it's not likely to ever get finished because I will have found something new and exciting and moved on.. Im not a fast painter... the channel "Stay Creative Painting" with Ryan O'Rourke (one of my favorites... he is like serious goals... amazing) has a series of 96 tutorials called "10 minute painting series," where Ryan does an entire 8×10"painting tutorial with instructions in 10 minutes. For a relative beginner like me, who besides a few youtube tutorials is 100% self-taught, they are much less daunting and intimidating than a full blown 11×14 pro level landscape ... my point tho... while Ryan knocks these out in 10 minutes... it usually takes me 4 to 8 times through the tutorial before I finish. But they are very useful because you get a ton of reps in that way and go through the entire process as many times as possible... whoch seems to be the best way to improve. I'm sorry, I'm not quite sure what you meant by the light being on it and seeing the material beneath...??
