Hi Stefan, I’ve been a guitar player of fairly poor standard for years with only basic and random finger picking. I heard this lesson and loved the tune so I decided to give it a try. It was very difficult for me but I gave it a go and after many many hours of practice I got the alternating base technique down along with the melody picking. This was about 3-4 years ago and now this song comes naturally. My point is that this lesson changed my guitar playing life. I can now learn many more complex picking songs quite quickly. Even some reasonably intermediate level ragtime blues stuff. Thanks Stefan, this was the big move for me in playing and also, thanks to my long suffering wife for listening to the same tune for about 150 hours,! Best wishes Stefan and thanks.

Excellent---LOVE this song and first heard it back in the 60's on a LP by Reverend Davis. Simple--yet NOT so simple. I play a version on classical guitar.

Stefan, I found a book you wrote called "Country Blues Guitar" printed in 1971, and it has the best, easiest to understand guitar tablature in it. I'm a professional musician and I'm teaching myself to play "old style", Delta type blues on the guitar and your tab is making it immeasurably easier to learn. I can't thank you enough for carrying on the tradition of teaching others what you have learned of the different blues styles. I am doing my best to do the same with what I learn. You rock.

The guy is a legend. I shared student halls of residences with a guy that had been taught by a Grossman enthusiast. I was an out and out shredder at the time. I was 17. It expanded my horizons hugely. Top bloke Stephan. Great sense of humour too.

This is wonderful, great music and so well explained. Four people are the product of the spoilt generation that likes to tell you how much they don't like something, instead of just moving quietly on.

Thank you, Stefan. I played this song in the sixties when I learned it from Donovan's version. I knew there was much more behind it (guitar wise), but could never lay my hand on a decent video. Thanks to internet I found your excellent instruction. It was some hassle to find out your exact picking, but I think I got it now. I am inclined to buy your complete DVD, but in the first place to learn some odd pickings. If you explain those it would be an enrichment for me. Charlie (Netherlands)

Davis' recording from Pure Religion doesn't include the extra beat when F is "rolled into." If you try listening the his arrangement from Pure Religion, using the first bass note as the & of 4, the entire tune is turned around, and the F part makes more sense. I tried counting the bass note as the down beat for a long time, and could never reconcile this. If you put the bass notes on &, the whole thing makes more sense. However both ways are awesome =D. Good lesson

Can some one explain why he mentions that the second finger should keep going 'home' to the E of the C chord (2nd fret fourth string) even though he doesn't seem to play this note in the pattern ? Or is the note played and i'm missing something ? Just good technique? I find myself simply removing the finger on and off the A on G-string. Thanks !
@lemony_enemy2665
@lemony_enemy2665 Жыл бұрын
Same with the second finger fretting but not playing the B on the G7 chord. I guess it's just better technique? In case the A string is strummed or played accidentally it maintains the chord?

Rest assured world, this would take me too long to accomplish. I really want to try again but...maybe I should just stick to harmonica. I understand it. It makes sense. Guitar confuses the shit out of me, the left hand, the right hand, the finges, the dam strings and the frets and the chords and the bars and the...basicly all of that. I wish I could just pick it up like I picked up playing harmonica but it seems impossible.

BL ..give yourself time.. start with the basics.. you can do a lot with very few simple shapes .. find a guy/girl you like...and take some basic lessons.. and " just do your best".. thats how it happens (excuses will get you nowhere) playing music is about training oneself ( via mimicry) .. you have to do the work.. and it takes time.. so you have to learn.. to take the time.. and give yourself time....and learn to enjoy the time it takes .. to "skill up" ( ie.. you have to teach your hands) SG has done 10,000 hours (hence why he makes it look easy)
