My father, who were in Bosnia (BA03 if I recall), said that the 20 mm akan on the Pbv 302 didn't so much attract attention as to make the opposition keep their heads down^^

@@RonJohn63 That was a problem they had in Croatia, then the Canadians decided that they were no longer going to follow past IN personnel examples of retreating when fired upon anymore and would defend themselves viciously if seriously threatened.

I like the way Arsenalen leaves the vehicles dirty when they are on display. In some ways it's the same as a modeler weathering his vehicle models. It provides a sense of what they look like when they are actually used, which is lacking on pristine museum pieces.

There have afterwards been alot in the danish medias about that hill fight. The guy who was in charge and sat in one of the tanks, lieutenant colonel Lars.R.Møller, is a very charismatic personality, like a real world crossover of Dirty Harry and John McClane from the Die Hard movies. "We didn't have more ammo" that's his style. 😄

I have heard that a Pbv-302 was hit by RPG-7 in Bosnia, but since is has such big boxes on the outside they acted as standoff armor so that the effect of the RPG was greatly reduced inside the cabin.

I've seen the Bandvagn and the Sisu Nasu in use in Northern Finland and Sweden, they seem really cool and useful for the deep snow.

@sada das The situation in former Yugoslavia was caused by its own insane inhabitants, and Denmark tried to put a stop to the fighting with overwelming power, not to be wiped away by local forces, armed better than we! But we where still a small force present and couldn't be everywhere at all times! The Yugoslavians had to do much of the work themselves to make the changes for a new country, now in several parts.

Drove exactly that one in Macedonia in 1994, it was waiting for spareparts, fanbelt, from Sweden, so it was stored in Kumanovo on the camp.

If I am not mistaken, in Mogadiscio also the Italian troops deployed some M-60s lent by the USMC and refurbished. They were not authorized to engage the enemy with the 105mm gun but they did anyway during the battle at check point pasta after being targeted by RPGs.

It is very interesting perspective by the Swede on the Danes in former Yugoslavia. The Danes claim the hill kept shooting at them and tried to kill them, but I guess you have to say that, when you spend so much ammunition.

It was a position that was shelling a town garrison, and the Danish commander then rolled up between the fire to protect them. But as the enemy keep firing he ordered the hill to pacified and they fired all the shells they had to make them understand that when the Danes rolled up, you really needed to stop shooting at them. The commander was also the one asked why they used so many shells by the politicians at home, and he said "Well we din't have anymore". He is still active as far as I know, think he is the leader of the soldiers union or something. He is really old school, and really the one you want in a fight.

Karlsson simply said he can't recall the exact circumstances around the hill getting blasted. The UN troops were tasked to keep the civilians safe, and had the Danes and Swedes been at Srebrenica, there wouldn't been a massacre.

In Timor, the wheeled Auslav was generally swapped for M113 as patrolling revealed excessive ground pressure tore the primitive road network to pieces. Sounds counter intuitive, but there you go.

Depending on your opposition . As far as Timor Leste is concerned it's mostly irregular action . The main concern is the Indonesian armed forces involvement . However any massive staging by them will be pick up by the intelligence of the task force before they could cross over . Amphibious assault from them will be out of the question given the amount of international navies in Timor waters then . The most realistic threats from Indonesia then is it's special forces infiltration. Heavy armour may not be necessary .

Wheeled vehicles cause a lot more "wear and tear": at comparable ground pressure the wheeled vehicle cuts deeper and bounces more than the tracked one. At the same weight, the tracked vehicle usually has less ground pressure. However, when making sharp turns a heavy tracked vehicle does a lot more damage (I've seen them tear up cobblestones).

The UN doesn't send vehicles anywhere. The UN asks countries to contribute forces and it's up to them what they send.

I’m a blonde blue-eyed swede. The first time I went on a peacekeeping mission my brain was totally fu**ed in the heat. I had constant brainfart for the first two weeks. It was really hard.

50 or 60 Degrees Fahrenheit is great weather for Texans anything below that no we have something called humidity so 40 degrees is fucken cold 40 degrees feeling like 30 or lower and when it 100 degrees here It feel like 105 or hotter we are used to it but we are used to the heat not the cold

The Swedish/Danish batalion (NordBat) was the only part of the UN mission to accomplish anything. And that was basicaly because of the Swedish batalion comander "interperting" (read ignoring) higher up UN orders in order to achieve his mission. At least that is the Swedish perspective thestrategybridge.org/the-bridge/2017/9/20/trigger-happy-autonomous-and-disobedient-nordbat-2-and-mission-command-in-bosnia

No S.Karlsson it was not the snow in Sweden which was the main factor for the cheap lightweight plastic, wood bodies on 80-90% of the Swedish transport and support vehicles in the army from 1950-2000 it was the nations financial disgusting cheap factor. When I think about the Swedish army material history now in hindsight I get cursed and nausea of how little a Swedish soldier lives and health was worth for Swedish politicians and the defense leadership and then with an enforced military duty system that you had to obey to, then you could have thought that you would have access equipment that gave you a chance to survive for as long as possible in the state of war but that was the swedish state to cheap for. Was part of the Swedish war organization from 1981-2011.

I never said that snow was the reason for the plastic version. I said it was perfect for snow and that it could be used in any type of terrain. Later the demand for a better protected verion came up.

Nothing to do with being cheap until the late 1970's when the economy in general spiralled out of control with inflation and devaluations. The "culprit" was the ability to field a force of 800 000 men, as that was regarded as making it less likely to get attacked in the first place compared to a fully protected force with less than a tenth of the numericals, in combination with the explicit desire to present as few tempting high value targets for tactical nukes as possible.
