Flying a single engine small plane over water. How risky is this flight? What safety gear do I need? How do I reduce risk and what happens if we ditch? Watch me fly across the rugged Bass Strait in Australia, hear Air Traffic Control, watch procedures, and enjoy today's aviation adventure.

A 16 minute Stefan video... Yes please. You have honestly helped with my personal anxiety so much, the videos you have done in the past where you are honest about little things like not wanting to go out or being nervous have allowed me to see a very confident person like you, can also have down days. Now whenever I have a bit of a down day, I watch a Stef video and Im feeling a bit more confident. Thanks Stef!

Hey Harry, that's humbling for me to hear. You are not alone having nervous or bad days. One of the worst parts of the internet is how other people's lives can seem better than our own, but trust me even confident sounding KZfaq pilots ABSOLUTELY have times when we struggle with anxieties or self-doubt. Conversely, the best part of the internet is connecting with like-minded people and similar personalities. So I'm grateful for your honesty, thanks for the message, and never feel alone in your feelings, because you are not. Stef 🤛

My old man is an old airline pilot (now retired). He had a terrifying UFO encounter over Bass Strait in the 90s while flying an IPEC DC-9. Still remember how freaked out he was when he came home. Bass Strait is a freaky place.

Did something similar in my RV10, Stef. Landing at Flinder's island was, err, interesting! Overflew, checked the wind sock, flew the circuit and approach to land into wind - by the time I had done that (3 to 4 minutes) the wind had shifted by 170 degrees. So had a stonking tailwind, power up, fly around, line up on the opposite end, and on final the wind had shifted to just about a full crosswind. Landed, but geez, it was fun. Love your work Stef, keep it up please

Nice work! The winds there can definitely whip up off the water. It was pretty windy when I landed, hard to see in the video but around 10-15 x/w I'd say. Thanks for watching Tony, glad you enjoyed the video.

About the CAPS, sometimes it seems as if the handle is covered up. I thought it was part of the pre-flight to remove that cover. That said, I've never been in a Cirrus, and I don't know about the system at all.
@StefanDrury
@StefanDrury 9 ай бұрын
There is a pin (attached to a red tag) that has to be removed as part of the checklist. Some pilots remove the black cover, I've been trained to leave it on. It has the emergency procedure written on it so I believe it's an aid to passengers if something happened to me and they needed to activate CAPS.
@fillywinks
@fillywinks 9 ай бұрын
Stef once answered the same question to me and said that one of the reasons is that there are instructions there which may be useful for passengers. I still think that if I was disoriented, spinning in IMC, picking up speed > max shoot deploy speed, I would like CAPS to be uncovered.

Great video Stef. I love these adventure type ones! One question... I don't fly IFR so not sure what is normal but I thought it was strange that when you asked to cancel IFR to do the coastal flight the controller cancelled your SARTIME. Was this the controller mishearing your radio call or is it standard to cancel SAR when cancelling IFR?
@StefanDrury
@StefanDrury 9 ай бұрын
Great question - because I was flying into an uncontrolled airport, if I fly all the way in IFR and then leave the airport without telling ATC, my SARTIME is still active. When landing at an uncontrolled airport you need to explicitly tell ATC to "cancel SAR" before landing. Conversely when I fly to a controlled airport (like Moorabbin, Class D) the Tower cancels your SARTIME when you land for you, no need to tell them to do that. So here, the controller was doing two things at once for me, cancelling my IFR services AND cancelling my SARTIME for arrival at Flinders Island.

A common thing I notice in your videos is the way ATC gives you a takeoff or landing clearance. In this case, you just get "cleared for takeoff" - no winds, no confirmation of the runway you're using. Does that mean you're just cleared to takeoff any direction you like, from any runway you like? I'm assuming not. Here in Canada, I'm more used to hearing something like, "winds 2-4-0 at 6, runway 23, cleared for takeoff." I'm pretty sure I've also heard some ATC on your videos say something like "cleared to land, runway right." In any case, I see some definite safety issues in that. Taking off from or landing on the wrong runway is very much a thing that happens. So, I'm curious... is that an Australian thing, or just a weird quirk of a particular airport?
@MarkNewtonFlies
@MarkNewtonFlies 9 ай бұрын
Class D tower, it’s all visual. They’ve already told you which runway to line up on, and they can see where you are, so “cleared for takeoff” is sufficient. If there’s ambiguity, they give a runway designation.
@StefanDrury
@StefanDrury 9 ай бұрын
Moorabbin is a class D airport and as part of local procedures we tell ATC which direction we want to depart prior to being cleared to takeoff. So they don’t give us a departure direction as we’ve already stipulated that.

@@StefanDrury That would be typical procedure here as well at a controlled airport (specifying direction of flight during the initial call to ground or clearance delivery). And the winds would of course be typically available via the ATIS/AWOS. I’ve just always seen it as one last “check” to ensure you’re sitting on the proper runway and pointed in the right direction, especially for an intersection departure. I haven’t checked the regs but I’m fairly certain that ATC in Canada is required to specify the runway ID/numbers in the takeoff or landing clearance. In any case, I just noticed it as something different than what I typically experience here in Canada and was curious if that’s the norm in Australia, or if it’s just a local thing at that airport. Regardless, I’ve been enjoying your videos for years now and always appreciate you taking us along for the ride. Thank you for sharing.
