Amazing performance! I have to ask - do you use any electronic effects in this piece? I notice the microphone on the bass and it sure sounds like you have some sort of distortion on sometimes, but could also just be a very good ponticello.. :)

Bård Ericson no distortion, just a lot of mics

Great music to hear ! Sounds like hes doing a tremolo on one string and playing harmonics on another string but I only see 4 strings not 5 like a lotta contemp basists use ? i just read your explanation below . The harmonic sounds sustained . its a beautiful thing. I wonder can harmonics be used with more tan one player on same notes and what it sounds like with many playrs on the same harmonic played using same finger. U mentioned harmonic wout hands. I don't know about this ! ???

Hello Daniele. This piece and performance is stunning from the beginning to end. I listened and watched the piece over and over. However, I still couldn't understand how there can be a static harmonic sound while you are just playing open harmonic trills. Can you explain just a little bit what you are doing in this idea technically? Are there any chance to play right hand harmonics with this type of control? Lastly, thank you so much for this awesome performance.

I came across your comment researching this technique for a piece I am premiering soon, and just wanted to provide some more info, in case it's helpful! (I don't know if you are a bass player, so hope this comes across as well meaning). The static harmonic sound is caused by the left hand positioning (which has to be very consistent), the open string 'appears' through the gaps in the trill when the finger comes on and off the string. The harmonic is so strong and projecting well so it sounds constant, and it's very easy to do this badly! A good bow speed/control and correct pressure (and position in relation to the bridge) makes a huge difference. Additionally, it is also possible to isolate harmonics with only the bow and no left hand, without the trill though. If you're interested in writing for the bass or workshopping pieces, you can reach me here or on my website :) have a good weekend.
