[Steinhart] Proper Bezel Insert Change

Hey there! Welcome back to the Channel.
Finally, I made the decision to change the bezel insert from the black ceramic to the red-black aluminium. The sole reason was that Gnomon Watches was taking to long for the dial issue I am facing and I couldn't resist the change. The bezel was sitting there for too long and it's calling out to me every day. But I am glad that I took the leap and change it. I am very happy with the results and look forward to taking more wrist shots for you guys!
Quick Guide (if the video is boring for you):
1. Items you need is hot water, bowl, sharp penknife, your watch and the bezel to be changed.
2. Place the water into the hot water with the bezel fully submerged
3. Occasionally rotate the bezel insert with force, if it's still tight, place it back into the hot water and redo until the bezel become loose.
4. Use your penknife to gently yet firmly remove the bezel.
5. Let the cleaning begin! Ensure no dust or adhesive before inserting the new bezel insert.
6. Align the bezel insert, press it in hard and you're done with the change!

You my friend are a genius! i have been stuck with a ceramic bezel insert that I can't drill through and the bezel itself won't come off so was very difficult to get the bezel insert out. You solved it, so thank you and well done.

🤣 ceramic is nice for matte bezel like my pam 683. But when it’s polished i feel it’s too loud. Though i have an oris that is polished bezel haha

@@WristDistractions yes I agree! Especially for those strong blue and red colors. That's too much bling-bling in my opinion. I even tried the new Rolex GMT root beer, it's beautiful obviously. But I prefered the old school GMT with aluminum Pepsi bezel. The ceramic is less versatile, definitely can't be a daily watch in my opinion. I'll receive my Steinhart tomorrow :) Pepsi (aluminum), 39mm. I hope the flat lugs won't make the watch wear too big

@@jean4j_ tbh i felt that it’s a bit too straight haha.. but then again it fits decently with the female end links. For me i had the 42mm but i’m pretty sure the 39mm would fit perfectly for me. My wrist is 7 inches for your reference.

Glad you made it though as we could see how the bezel is attached, ie the internal zig zag spring which means you would need to remove the insert before prising off the bezel (if you needed to remove the bezel). BW Andy

Thanks so much for this video! I just replaced my Ocean One 39 black ceramic bezel insert with an aluminium one from the Gnomon exclusive Ocean Vintage Red 39. You can buy the inserts directly from Gnomon if you e-mail them. Also, I didn't even need to use a knife. Just twisting the insert clockwise did the trick after warming it up in the hot water!

honestly, I like aluminium cause it helps so much towards visibility, the non-engraved ceramic bezel is too reflective and you really can enjoy it well or take good photos. But steinhart has released new engraved ceramics so you can browse and select.

And I'm here looking for a ceramic bezel. I know you removed yours because of the pip but I've read around the web people switching from ceramic to aluminium bezels on steinys.

Guess who's gonna do the same thing on his GMT 39 ;) Steinhart released an engraved black ceramic bezel for it, FINALLY!!! So that hot water, was it like 100° hot or more like 60°?

Omg you kidding me!! Engraved ceramic on a 39mm that's so much to ask for!! Woohoo!! I boiled my water in a electric boiler so I would say it's 100 degrees out but about 90-80 when i'm in operation.

Good morning. I have a question about the first step. Can I soak it in hot water for 5 minutes? And how hot is the water? How °c ? Is not removing the bezel at all to reduce the risk? Since my watch is made of acrylic glass, I am worried that it will not cause any problems even if it is immersed in hot water for a long time. Thank you.

You do not need to soak it for excessive time. The idea is to use the hot water to melt the adhesive on the bezel insert. Dip it in and out then try to rotate the bezel insert the other way of the bezel rotation. This would help in slowly dislodging the insert.

I'm not sure the temperature but once i got it out of the boiler, i placed my steinhart in one or two minutes later perhaps 80 degrees? Yes the bezel is not available nowadays for self change

@@WristDistractions Thank you for replying, I did send them an email as you said their reply was they won’t sell it anymore and they send me a list of prices how much they will charge, and they will replace a bezel with the original model as the watch Sold, that mean they won’t change from aluminium to ceramic or changing colour unfortunate. I have no choice only buying it from a third-party, can you please give me the size?

I’m planning to do this on my (2018) Rolex gmt Pepsi, can you still do this process and how much water do I need to put in the bowl?

To be honest I'm not sure if this will work on a Rolex GMT Pepsi! So I do advise asking someone who is professional at doing so about changing the bezel insert. let's say if you're really comfortable to do so, the bezel insert has to be fully submerged into the hot water. As the adhesive on the back of the bezel will melt due to the hot water. Thanks for dropping by anyway :) hope you have fun with this.

Yes the bezel is directly from Steinhart, as you can see from the video... I didnt have any glue or adhesives around me. The bezel insert comes with adhesive as I just simply remove the non stick paper from the bezel. 😊 thank you for watching! Hope it helped you some how..

I doubt it will have! Because steinhart are great diver watches! I've placed it in ice cold beer for pictures and also hot water! 300m water resistance work wonders!

I'm looking to buy a new ocean one 39 black ceramic from a carousel seller, however it is the older one with the hard to read font on the bezel. Steinhart has the fixed version on their website but it's going to cost at least $150 extra. I'm thinking of just buying to bezel insert for less than $50 and having it changed locally or even by myself

Part of removing insert was "fast forward". Impossible to see anyting.

the idea is to soak in hot water for the adhesive to melt and just rotating the bezel will do buddy.

Interesting, hmmm perhaps you have to soak it in longer? I personally am aware of the hair dryer trick but i've not seen or hear anyone around me did it. Perhaps you can try this method again and do your best to rotate the bezel insert as once it touches hot water, the bezel is slowly come loose.

Ha! That's not dirty, I just changed my DSSD and I'm a barber, you have no idea how much hair and gunk I had to clean. I took off the bezel ,to my surprise bearings and no teeny springs thank god.

I believe the bezel on steinharts are really different they really make their own bezel. I'm not too sure about it being a standard measurement but you can try? This bezel is originally from steinhart.

My water heater is set at 120 degrees F. Do you suppose that this is hot enough? I'm thinking that I can hold my watch under the running hot water coming out of the faucet. You said in another reply that your water was 80 to 90 degrees when you were working with it. So, I'm thinking my 120 degrees water will do the same.

The important thing is to keep the watch dunked into the water. As the hot water expand the bezel insert it will allow water to sip through it. Eventually as you take in and out and try to turn the bezel (try and error) eventually the bezel will become loose and turn even on the bezel itself.

I was advised not to because it's different compared to an SKX where you can pop out and put it back in simply. I heard if you pop out a steiny's bezel a metal piece will fall out

Honestly I believe it's possible. As the hot water will be able to melt the adhesive within the bezel and the insert.

Directly from steinhart's website. But now you couldn't get them anymore! They stopped selling it.

A great vid , i was wondering if this was possible , Steinharts being a little pain removing the bezel etc ..ive just bought this watch with the new version ceramic ..i would of done this in a heartbeat to mine , but only to realise in horror Steinhart no longer selling bezel inserts !! you dont have a spare you could sell me ..? ah frustrating , i hope they re-think that decision .. meantime , anyone know where i can buy a bezel to fit the 39mm Steinhart gmt ? black red ,bezel ceramic or aluminium ... thanks

I think you're right (ha, ha) ... it's about as much off to the right (perhaps a little bit more) as my OVM's bezel is off to the left from the factory. I made the mistake of taking a loupe (10x) to the watch ... but that was the only imperfection (if you can call it that) I could find. Fit and finish is pretty amazing on these things.

Vote this down, STAT. Unless Steinhart welded my shit on or something. I tried this. NOPE. Then a hair dryer and a heat gun, which worked fine for every other of a hundred bezel insert swaps I've done. This one...BARELY MOVED, and not enough to get an Xacto knife under the edge without scratching it. And after prying, scratching the piss out of it, now my insert is ruined. So, thanks! I might as well take the whole damn thing apart and pop the crystal out since that's the ONLY correct way to do it. This way is bullshit and doesn't work.

I am glad I watched it because I was going to pop the whole bezel and read here and saw in other vids that I would be damaging it. My question is what adhesive do you Use? Where do you find it? What is the brand name. I imagine 3M, but which one? Many thanks.

The steinhart's bezel will come with Adhesive. I believe steinhart uses 3M. So far the bezel for mine is still intact.
