This is a demonstration of installing STEK DYNO Carbon Gloss self-healing 3D Carbon Fiber look PPF onto our almost 400k mile Honda Insight with failing clear coat on the roof. Not only is this an amazing visual upgrade, but a less expensive alternative to repainting the roof.

Im so glad i selected this PPF brand. I Love how realistic it looks. Wishing i mixed it with The shinny Gold one that looks like the Acura rdx color i think acura calls it tiger eye pearl.

I've been interested in using the higher grade, i think its called 6d carbon wrap. Even that 3d stuff looks good

One question for all you engineers/material scientists out there. I noticed on a car that I park outdoors and wash less often, that the PPF appears to pick up a hazy finish over time. I'm curious if self-healing PPF **requires** that the car be washed more regularly to prevent dust/dirt from sitting on the PPF. With self-healing PPF the healing effect works because the film softens at high temperature, levels any scratches out, then hardens/firms back up as the temperature returns to normal temp. My hypothesis/educated guess is that this same effect at higher temps (hot days) can result absorption of small particles, dust, and other contaminants on the surface of the film. Once the film "traps" dust, it's nearly impossible to pull it back out. I wonder if this is something that Scott H. could help us test. Different films (self healing and not) without any sealant/protectant layer. Let the films build up some light dust/dirt (i.e. sitting outside / road debris). Then either hot day soak outdoors for several days or gentle heat lamp.

How the coating works, for both HYDROPHIC, and SELF healing is quite simple. You are going very deep thinking the penetration of the layers inside the film infect its actual all the contaminants on the surface which builds up, that effects with the self healing and the hydrophobic properties. Even with washing the vehicle the contaminants are not really washed out properly, so using maintainers such as STEK Fusion will restore the functions at its best.

I like the carbon fiber look but not of the black. Do they have the cf look in other colors?

They do... they have a "clear" version that will go over the existing color of paint to show a similar effect, although not as "3D"

About to so the same thing to my brothers civic. Failing clear. Did you do anything to the roof to try and clean up the flaking clear before application?

Yes sanded with 3000 grit to rough it up a little bit but didn't polish out anything

Did you prep the bodywork before installation? Does the defects show through like normal vinyl? Thanks

If there are any big defects, they will show. Prep consisted of an IPA wipe and nothing else. A few years later it's still going great.

@@wellingbadboy if the paint is already ruined, it may not be a bad idea just to even it out with some fine sandpaper first. This one was not visible after the install though.

@@ScottHD thanks for that buddy, My bonnet is bad from a poor repair and I need to address the dust nibs and fish eyes first. ( it wasn't me who sprayed it ) lol

That looks really good. Not far off real carbon fiber. I don't many people could tell the difference.

Actually very well. We've installed it on numerous other vehicles and have had great feedback. The "weakness" of it is hard impacts or pressure - it will "flatten" out some of the 3D effect and it looks like a black spot.
