Wow Larry, you nailed it with your reasons for legacy auto failing because they are too lazy to develop software etc. well summarised.
@chrisheath2637
@chrisheath2637 8 ай бұрын
Not necessarily lazy, unable to. They under-estimated the radical changes in electronic drive trains, efficiency, software, consumers changing preferences. The Auto industry is an old industry - modern buyers want fully - connected smart-phones on wheels. VW had immense problems with developing software, and Jim Farley said that one of the problems was the hundreds of electronic systems, doors, wipers, engine management etc. from different suppliers with different software platforms - some of which had licensing agreements, where Ford could not change the software - and then trying to combine all of these into one coherent overall software interface. They thought they could "just put a battery and an electric motor" into their ICE vehicles, and that was it.Turns out that that was completely wrong...

Japanese, European, and American (except Tesla) OEMs are all way behind their Chinese counterparts in EV design and manufacturing. No country except China is serious in developing EVs.

Don’t forget the new emission standards coming to China in January! This is going to further kill ICE sales unless the OEM’s can get another postponement. The OEM’s aren’t going to have anything to sell in China. Perhaps that’s best. Maybe they need to leave that market until they can figure out how to make EV’s at a profit. 😢😢😢

How much money has Royal Dutch Shell PLC loaned to and invested in Stellantis? Why does Stellantis have their international offices on the Royal Dutch Shell PLC Hague campus?

Now, the culture battle. I've worked in China for 5 years. Irs tough. They think differently. Some good. Some not so good. But working with them us tough. You can tell them what to do, or you can be told what to do. Compromise is a different thing. Because they don't know what you want and you don't know what they want. The frustration is grinding.

GM just announced that they are now moving away from EV and moving toward Hydrogen.

Sound great until you realize there is just a very small hydrogen infrastructure which is not large enough to sell enough hydrogen fueled cars either ICE or Fuel Cell to generate electricity. In time hydrogen may be fact in long haul trucking, shipping, and air travel both cargo and passenger. But the caveat is there enough hydrogen infrastructure built out to sell enough vehicles ICE or Fuel Cell. Also how much energy is needed to generate enough hydrogen for our needed to transition from petroleum to hydrogen. I think Hydrogen Fuel Cell has a place to augment BEVs but it is not going to happen soon in mass market maybe bespoke solutions.
@ssing7113

Hydrogen might be great for 15 years from now for many small areas batteries can’t reach or haven’t Did they not understand that hydrogen has the same core problems ( energy intensive. No infrastructure. Still has to be transported. Relatively “new”. No customer understands it. More expensive to rebuild a new technology. GM has no retail spots to sell. ) And Elon has already mapped hydrogen and there’s a reason he didn’t go that route. Again I think it will be core to a far out future so we truly do have a net neutral world. And aren’t reliant on oil for transport

'..all because you can't get down to real engineering..' Good comment. But for the component vendors like Bosch, Magma, CATL etc it would mean they are either out of business (the car companies do it themselves) or they are much more integrated with different car manufacturers who should compete.
@MultiChuckleberry

When they buy in to Chinese car companies - are they buying in to Chinese standards of quality? If they are, this could be a disaster. If they want to compete with Tesla, they need Tesla levels of quality. This might be a significant challenge. I would be VERY reluctant to buy a Stellantis badged-up Chinese car until I was sure that it is long-term reliable and safe.

10:53 "The tsunami is here" The shoreline water always recedes right before the big wave comes. The thing is that legacy auto can't see the tsunami. EV sales are only about 7% this year and next year will be only about 10% of sales, so it doesn't seem all that important. However, that kind of position is deceptive because the explosion in exponential EV sales growth will happen later in the decade, perhaps 2026 or 2028. By then any company not all in on doing EVs will be swept away, it may be too late to seek the high ground. China will eat them up. Here's my optimistic EV adoption guess Year % of Sales # of EVs Sold Total EVs in US 2022 5% .67 M 3 M 2023 7% 1 M 4 M 2024 10% 1.3 M 5.3 M 2025 14.5% 1.8 M 7.1 M 2026 22% 2.6 M 10.0 M 2027 36% 3.7 M 14.6 M 2028 56% 5.3 M 22 M 2029 69% 7.2 M 31 M 2030 79% 9.2 M 41 M 2031 85% 11 M 52 M My pessimistic guess is that we won't see 85% sales in the US until 2035

Stellantis is just adding another brand to their brand card. This deal does not in any way solve the problems for the other brands under their ownership. If they use the leap motors technology across all their brands then effectively they all become "leap" cars with different badges. No brand differentiation.

Just as Dell and other PC makers purchase Intel chips, auto makers will need to purchase the automotive operating system and computer. The only tested and proven system is Tesla, but Tesla is a competitor. This is the big conundrum.

You can partner with a Chinese co. But, you can never own more than 49% of one by Chinese law. This means only Chinese can make any decisions. As usual Chinese acquire a hundred years of tech but always reap the majority of profits.

More then 1 company can be a shareholder of a chinese company Given that they likely won't be the only ones to invest into leapmotors its they will get influence. Combined with the fact that they'll own more then half of the JV to sell and build outside of China

Stellantis isnt adding another brand. The Chinese co. Is picking up another source of investment and technology. Old American co.s should swallow their pride and make deals with Tesla for technology. An American co. China is terrible government i hate to see people so eagerly submitting to them. I wont buy a Chinese car but I own a Tesla.
