In todays episode I try out the new stem splitting feature in Apples Logic Pro for the iPad, and see how it compares to the stem splitting inside Koala Sampler. Enjoy

This was a great video idea, I was wondering how this workflow would look. I just got a 404 and Koala. I will definitely be using a lot of your videos to help me learn the device and workflow. Thanks for the quality content.

Thank you for a very enlightening comparison. The Koala stems reminded me of early mp3 coding. Sounding almost like they were played under water. A lot of timing and phase errors. Maybe they could be usable if you enhanced that with a flanger😉 The Logic stems, although not perfect, sounded perfectly usable to me. Just use some eq or another instrument/sound to mask the “errors” As for the muffled bass. Having worked a lot with this type of music, I can testify that it’s true to form. Modern recordings tend to use more top end and transients for clarity, but the older stuff sounds pretty much like the Logic stem. Just my 2 cents.

Appreciate the feedback! I definitely think the Koala stems are useable, I would probably just use pieces not whole loops and some effects on top could create some interesting sounds. You’re right about the bass, there probably wasn’t that much high end to begin with. 👍🙂

The vocal reverb was in the original. It just isolated it along with the vocal.

Hey brother! Love your vids! Random question, I’m a ableton producer and I have a the push 2. I’m very new to push and want to make beats from vinyl. I wanted to ask you do you have to have the daw open when sampling on viny with push? & should if I bought a mixer to scratch when making beats do you have any recommendations on mixers and a vinyl player? Sorry long question just super inspired by your vids man, want to make boom bap beats and learn to scratch but just not sure where to start
@nervouscooks
@nervouscooks 2 ай бұрын
Hey! So… first up, yes for having Ableton open for sampling with the Push 2. That’s because the Push 2 isn’t standalone and it also doesn’t have dedicated inputs on the device like the new Push 3. However, it just needs to be open but you can mainly work on the hardware without needing to touch the mouse which is cool so it almost feels standalone. As for mixers, lots of choices but it depends on what you want. Anything for scratching needs a good crossfader so anything with an innofader is good Traktor Z2, Numark Scratch, likewise Rane mixers and some Pioneer with the Magvel faders. Those options are generally found on newer mixers that have dvs options for time code viny like Serato. I use a Traktor Z2 so I can use time code vinyl when I want to but also regular vinyl too. If you don’t care about dvs time code stuff then older Vestax mixers like the 05 pro are still really good scratch mixers. Turntables are more limited, obviously Technics 1200 but very expensive. I’m not sure offhand what modern decks other than technical are good for scratching. I use a Vestax PDX 2000 mkii. Old as the hills but still going strong and it has ultra pitch of + - 50% which is great for scratching particularly when learning. Another older deck is the Numark TTX but they were a bit hit and miss quality wise. Avoid the TTX-1 as they usually die. My TTX is still going strong but it has needed some tlc over the years. Anyway that’s about all I can think of. Hope it helps! 👍

Hey cooks quick question when you on the sp and let’s you hit record then click a pad and it says wait … my problem is it won’t trigger sometimes and if keep playing the. About 3 seconds… it will trigger a note off my micro freak or if I use a auv3 … is that a bug or a wrong setting ?

@nervouscooks
@nervouscooks 2 ай бұрын
For me personally, absolutely but then I use Logic Pro to do mixing, mastering etc on the go so I already pay for the privilege. Like I said in another video, Logic is an opt in and out subscription so you could buy it for a month and do a bunch of stem splitting and then take a break until you need it again. That's how i look at it anyway, I'm sure some people will make do with Koalas built in splitting and who knows, maybe Koala will get an update to its algorithm or whatever it uses to bring it up to par with the other options out there which would be great. 🙂

Well yes, i think the stem stplitting in Logic is better and it should, they charge monthly and they are this company we all hate but we slowly are being some how forced to use... im not sure if i want to keep giving money to them... on the other hand koala is like the robin hood of beat making... i understand the comparison it has to be done but at the same time its worth to say its unfair
@nervouscooks
@nervouscooks 2 ай бұрын
I see your point but again, I have to keep clarifying this, it’s not a video designed to sway you to Apple. It’s merely pointing out that if you want better stems but still using Koala, this is a way you can do it. The whole point is to continue to use Koala but I think a lot of people are treating this video like I’m saying switch and don’t use Koala anymore. I love how much people will come to defend Koala, but this is not an anti Koala video. 🙂

I was using the stems splitter last night and then throwing them in the sampler … I think this stem might be the best out so far even better than the mpc but that’s just me I say logic pro for iPad is worth the 5 dollars now because the koala add add on was like 3 or 5 dollars for samurai

Yeah it’s very good! I know a lot of people complain about the subscription but honestly for £5 a month I could buy one less milkshake or something and pay for the features. It also does way more than just the stems too as you know. I just hope it pushes Elf audio to step up their game a little. 👍

@@nervouscooks on the one hand it is true that it's just a pretty small prize, but these subscription add up. that's why I think koalas price model is just so good and fair. you only pay once and you get to decide which features you want to pay for.

@@johnviera3884 you’re right and in another year it will be better still. That’s the issue with the speed in which technology advances. We expect results quicker and quicker. My only point in this video is that you can use logic for better stems, but to use them with Koala. Best of both worlds. 👍

You really can’t hear those bass notes on Logic’s drums? Seriously?You need better headphones, man. There’s not a usable kick anywhere in that sample, whereas there’s definitely a usable kick on the Koala drums. You seemed predisposed and primed to believe Logic would be better even at the start of the video. After a few months you’ll find Logic just as unusable as Koala for stem splitting. Stem splitting is hype and hot air. It’ll go the way of Google Glass. Just like the whole “AI” hype.
@nervouscooks
@nervouscooks 2 ай бұрын
I have zero reason to be biased towards Logic, this isn’t a sponsored video. The simple fact is Logic stems sound better and I’m confident if I put that to a vote most would agree. No stem technology is perfect and sure you can hear some leakage on everything to some degree but I disagree with you. It sounds like you have some issue with new tech in general and whilst I share some sentiment regarding AI hype, I think I could use those stems to make a beat. I did say you would need to EQ in the video. Anyway you’re entitled to your opinion of course.
