In May 2015, I gave my first masterclass at ACM in Guildford. At the end of the session, I performed an interpretation of 'Stengah' by Meshuggah.
They're a band I've listened to and have great respect for, and they have taught me a lot about seamlessly marrying odd time signatures and groove. Tomas Haake is one of my top influences - I hope I've done this some justice. I only had a day to rehearse so there are a few blips here and there.
Thank you to ACM for having me and Kuba Mleczko (www.mirroredrecords.com) for helping on the day and providing this audio mix.

There's some subjectivity involved. If they're not into a particular genre (metal) and especially if they've never heard the song before, they can be somewhat dismissive.

cause they were not groovy. haha way too straight forward and static and cycled for a Haake groove. He mainly used them in direct conjunction with either kicks or cymbals.. which kind of seemed stale to me.

This seems to be a fairly common setup for a clinic/masterclass type performance. Can't understand why the audience (all musicians, if not drummers) are not placed in a circle behind or to the side of the kit, so that they can actually see what Jay Postones is doing... How are you going to learn anything if all you can see is his left foot? Thankfully, Jay posted this video!

@@NintendoCaprisunish honestly it was one of the most enlightening classes I have ever been to, especially as a drummer who looks up to people like Thomas Haake and Jay. He really went in to his history before he was a professional musician, working in a building not far from the ACM, and getting the call up from Tesseract. He then spent a good amount of time explaining how he writes his parts and how he writes with the band. It was amazing, he played Nocturne, a prog rock song that I think was part of a side project, and of course Stengah haha. I even got to have a go on his kit :)
