I was about to end my session with the microscope when I saw this Stentor swallow a small Amoeba and then come close to an Arcella Amoeba. My focus wasn't great and my phase alignment was a bit off, but I thought the action was worth recording.
Equipment:
Microscope #1: Nikon Labophot microscope with a Nikon Phase Contrast condenser. Objectives include an Omax 4X, Nikon phase contrast objectives (10X and CFN Plan 20X); a Zeiss Neofluar 40X Ph2 (works with the Ph3 stop on the Nikon condenser); a Zeiss Neofluar 100X Ph3 oil (works with the Ph4 stop on the Nikon condenser); and a Leitz 50X oil immersion. I also have a Nikon E plan 10X and a Nikon E plan 20X. If you see darkfield at 40X, I’m using the Omax 40X objective.
Illumination is by a homemade LED setup using a 3- watt Cree neutral white LED.
Microscope #2: Omax M837TL-A191 microscope with dry darkfield condenser. Omax objectives include a 4X, 10X, plan 20X, 40X, a plan 60X, and a 100X oil immersion.
Camera: Amscope MU300
Video Editing Software: PowerDirector 12

@@jotarokujo_starplatinum5492 If you mean prove it's not faster than the speed of light, that's easy. Maximum speed of contraction of Vorticella, known to be faster than Stentor, is less than 10 cm per second. In one second, light travels about 186,000 miles. So 4 inches versus 186,000 miles.

Can you suggest a way to culture stentor? I have made hay infusions, collected pond and stream water for many years now but not found any. What do they like most of all? yeast and bacteria maybe? great footage btw/ I subscribed!

Are these tiny microbes conscious?
@BillPorter1456
@BillPorter1456 6 жыл бұрын
I don't think they are conscious in the way human beings are conscious. Keep in mind that they are only a single cell whereas our brains have billions of cells.
@ronch550
@ronch550 6 жыл бұрын
Bill Porter yeah I suppose, but judging by the way they move and catch prey it's like they're actually conscious. Who knows.. what if consciousness doesn't necessitate a complex brain.
@BillPorter1456
@BillPorter1456 6 жыл бұрын
Some believe that consciousness, at least some level of consciousness resides in all beings, even inanimate objects. I think for consciousness of the sort exhibited by human beings, one would need a complex system, though not necessarily a biological system. But yes, they move and act in ways that are often very efficient and adaptive.
