This is wild. I made a bottle as per instructions, except I whisked an egg with water, added some fish sauce, bit of vinegar and a couple of salmon skins from dinner, cut holes in bottle and added the bait, then left it. Caught a few flies in the first days, but nothing to write home about. About a week later I went to look at it and..... my God.... it was like a horror show in there. Solid black. I leave the bottle on its side so it doesnt blow over, and once per day upend it so the dead flies go to the bottom, and put it back. The 2L bottle is currently about 1/3rd full of solid flies. It stinks a bit if you get close (within maybe 4m / 16ft), but damn does it work... (we were getting pestered by lots of flies this year during bbq's, seems the neighbours were being careless with their rubbish)

I'll be trying this. I've ordered some fishmeal powder, to that add some baking yeast and sugar. I'm hoping to get close to the dry bait used in the original red top fly catcher as they are awesome. I'll make some with eggs though to compare. Your method clearly works great 👍🏻

I don't know why this video doesn't have more views because seriously it is the best DIY ever I wish I had this in my barn at the racetrack this would have been a lifesaver but I have a cat rescue and my animals are on wood pellets and even though there's no cat urine smell for some reason flies are just ridiculous but I'm going to give this a go thank you so very much for the share!

I cannot stress enough how great this worked! I'm so glad I saw this! Only thing I did differently was use fresh eggs. They rotted in the bottle. Thank you for posting!

@@jimcsk yes, but I placed it away from my seating so the flies would go where the smell was.

I was thinking the same, why can’t I just use a good egg, mix it in with some vinegar to it can rot or curdle inside the container, and in a couple of days it should rot /curdle in the sun, and Bod’s your uncle.!!!

Thanks, I will also use a plastic bottle. In the grand scheme of things one of my greatest joys & preoccupations is to trap houseflies & wasps in jam jars. I create some holes on the jam jar covers/caps, throw in some chicken/fish remains & secure the caps. I manage to trap about 300 plus per jar every two days. This may sound revolting to you but I basically abhor irritating insects, specially when they come for the cooking & when one is having meals. Besides, there is a Chinese saying which goes that when one has achieved everything in life & nothing to do there is no greater pleasure than in swatting flies.

Not as effective but not as offensive to us in our garden. And less in the house almost immediately.

Place it at least 50 feet away from your home so the flies are attracted AWAY rather than toward your home. And, like you said, the smell.

iLived 5 years in Iceland, lived and worked in Reykjavik,I am Danish so for me, it wasn't a huge culture difference, but it sure was for the amazing Nature and wildlife., sadly it's very expensive living there. I especially loved to go to "sund" in the evening and enjoy the hot pools outside while snow was falling down...OMG,I have so many good memories from my time there. Hope to go back again soonOne of the thing I remember from a month-long visit to Germany a few years ago was how I was able to find some really, really good deals on food at the grocery story. Usually it was stuff that simply had to be sold that day or thrown away, and it was marked down considerably. If you wanted to, you could simply walk to the grocery store every day, buy whatever was on sale, and just make a day's worth of meals out of that.

You'd want a mesh cone trap. Bait on the ground, mesh cone taped into a jar, flipped upside down so the wide cone is about an inch or two off the ground, bait under the cone. You'd need a post of some sort and either a piece of PVC tube sealed at one end to slide it onto, or just tape it down. Flies gather on the bait, and when they fly off they hit the mesh. Since they fly upwards (lots of bugs naturally go upwards blindly as a reflex), they work through the mesh cone into the jar. The cone is taped to the lip of the jar so they get caught by the jar. There are videos featuring this method on youtube, the flies die and they are dry, clean, and ready to be fed to other critters - assuming you tend the trap fairly often.

Quick question, is it better to have the trap hanging up higher or is it just as effective on the ground? I live in France & our region is well known for flies this time of year & lots of goat farms!! Cheers

If you do it this way the flies would find it equally easy to get in or out.. The serrated edges from this dude's method creates that little more of an obstacle.. minor, but perhaps just enough to keep the flies in.. Ya don't want this method turning into a feedin station for flies...
