Thank you so much for posting this video! I am attempting cushions for the first time. I have to say you did a phenomenal job with explaining the process. I had been watching several videos and was missing the why in particular parts…your video explained them! I is good to know this can be done on a basic machine, because that is what I have as well. Your cushion turned out perfectly! I am going to look at getting the continuous zip you mentioned in it as well. Once again great job…and I will be sure to check out any of your other videos!

Current Kitchen remodel has added a box window seat that needs a cushion. Even though I sew, I am intimidated by upholstery projects but have decided to give it a try. Your tutorial gave me great content on materials needed and direction for sewing. Ironically, the best part for me was how you make the continuous bias strip for your piping. My focus is Heirloom sewing for infants and children, so I make 100s of yards of petite piping. The quick demo of continuous bias strip will save me TONS of time and drastically less waste of fabric. Wish the tutorial would have given a bit more specific guidance on how to over lap the fabric to cover your zipper pulls. Now… off to ordering my Dacron batting.

We're so glad you decided to give your upholstery project a go! We can relate with you on this for sure! We're definitely not pros when it comes to this kind of sewing, which is partly why we wanted to make a video about it, to show others that you can DO IT TOO! Thanks for letting us know where you'd like more direction in the project as this helps us in future filming. You'll have to let us know how your cushion turns out!

You two have no idea how much you just helped me! I have watched every video on this topic and felt hopelessly stupid since they either did not talk at all to explain the steps, had nothing printed on the screen such as measurements, left out entire steps such as the foam and batting or any numerous other steps. There is contradictory advice on the information super highway but we expect that but you two ladies with the fabulous fingernails cleared all the detritus out of the way. I fortunately had a large piece of high quality 3" thick memory foam just sitting around and I bought a roll of 1" thick upholstery grade high density foam that I adhered to the memory foam using spray adhesive. I didn't need the internet to figure this out (I hope it'll work, I think it's fine) and cut the thing into 4, 18" square seat cushions and am going to cover them with batting using the spray adhesive. But everything after this was a giant-ass mystery. I love you both!

I'm getting ready to make my first seat and back cushion and luckily came across this video for some more direction. My project is going to be a bit of a challenge for a first upholstery job because it's a T shape seat (T portion dimensions are not real big) and the back cushion has a full radius. Seat foam is 3" and back foam is 2". I plan on covering foam with Dacron I purchased, at least sides and one side of seat and back. Have a few questions I need help on. Should I dimension finished cover(s) to the foam dimensions or perhaps add 1/2" to allow for me to get foam (with Dacron attached) into the cushion? On your domestic machine what weight thread and needle do you like to run? Thanks so much ! Bryan
@2thesunnyside
@2thesunnyside 2 ай бұрын
Wow! Good luck with your project. You'll have to let us know how it turns out. Great questions. We made our cover to fit the foam. It's a tight fit getting it in with the dacron on, but it gives it a nice full look without any loose fabric. If we remember correctly, we did use a thicker thread... not sure of the weight, but just something we could pick up at the fabric store, and we also used a universal needle. Obviously you could use a stronger needle depending on the type of fabric you're using. Hope that helps. and have fun with your project 🙌🏻

Thanks for your kind comment. As of now we don't have a video showing all those steps on how to use a sewing machine. That's a great idea for a video for us to make! You could definitely try searching how to use a sewing machine on KZfaq and or google to see what comes up. I'd be surprised if there wasn't information on that available.

I'm having trouble figuring out the yardage I need for my cushions. I tried using Sailrite's calculator but can't get it to work for me. My cushions are 22" x 44" (4) and 22" x 89" (2). All cushions are 5" deep. The fabric is 60" wide.Could you recommend a different calculator to use?

I am having such a hard time doing the continuous bias strip. I think that is where the person demonstrating needs to slow down. I've taken ot two seams and can't figure it out.
@2thesunnyside
@2thesunnyside Жыл бұрын
The bias strip can be tricky for sure! Sorry the directions aren't clear enough in the video. We should've filmed a little better as we were pinning the fabric into the "tube" shape. You can find step by step directions and images of this step here: www.rockymountainsewing.com/how-to-make-continuous-bias-binding/ Hopefully it'll make more sense seeing each step drawn out. Let us know if we can help with anything else.

Do you cut 4 boxing sections plus a zipper section? Or 3 boxing sections and a zipper section?

We actually only cut 2 pieces for the boxing section. One long strip for the front and two sides and then the zipper section which was aout 75".

How did you come up with 182" in step two if your cushion measures 86 x 30?
@2thesunnyside
@2thesunnyside Жыл бұрын
We added several extra inches to the box length to allow for the concealed zipper edges. It may be helpful to review our blog post on how to get measurements if you'd like to see images again. www.2thesunnyside.com/how-to-make-box-cushion/#5-how-to-measure-and-cut-fabric-for-a-box-cushion

@@2thesunnyside Could you please show the math on 182"?
@2thesunnyside
@2thesunnyside Жыл бұрын
Sure thing. We should've filmed this part a little better. We cut the length for the box piece the length of the 2 sides (30"x2=60") + the front (86") + an extra 18" on each side on the back of the cushion (18"x2=36"). So 60+86+36=182. This will allow us to center the zipper section on the back plus allow extra fabric when we add the zipper section. There is an overlap over each end of the zipper that will fold over and encase each end of the zipper. Hope this helps. At this part in the video when we add the zipper section, you'll see why we added the extra fabric.

I must be dumb because I have tried countless videos for making a cover and I just cant get it done. I tried with boxed corners and gave up and then tried this method with the side panels but I cant get the corners right. I get almost to the edge and try to turn but the issue is the fabric gets in the way and then the corners are puckered and look terrible. Thankfully I've been trying on regular cheap cotton fabric so I dont waste the upholstery fabric. This has me so stressed out. The video is great and explains everything well but for some reason no matter how I try it doesnt work. My mom may be waiting another year to get her cushion cover

The thought of even sewing a cushion stresses us out! We truly didn't want to make our own for this reading nook, but to have a custom one made just wasn't in the budget. So we can completely relate and understand your frustration! We had our own stressful moments with this one too! You could try using a presser foot specifically for upholstery work, or maybe try to talk with someone in your local fabric store. I wish we could be more help.

@2thesunnyside

Thanks for the input. We used a zipper foot and the setting was the longest stitch our machine would make. And we used a heavy duty needle like you would for jeans.
@PamKraemer
@PamKraemer Жыл бұрын
Any time you're sewing thicker fabric such as outdoor, canvas, denim etc, you use the longest straight stitch you have and an upholstery sewing machine needle, change the needle often. The foot she was using was a zipper foot for the piping and the zipper. For about $6 you can buy a piping foot that makes piping a breeze to sew. Stay away from craft stores, they're a joke. Order the presser feet online. I've seen no video save for one (which did not have piping,) that showed anything about machine settings or needles.

Thanks for chiming in with all this additional info Clarice! IF (and that's a big if) we tackle this project again, we'll definitely be purchasing a piping foot!
