Coober Pedy is a small desert town in Australia where the entire population lives in underground homes. With outside temperatures hovering over 100 degrees, residents made permanent homes in the cooler temperatures of old mine shafts.

@@nicksacco5041 Literally everywhere on Earth has some natural problem to deal with: earthquakes, flooding, tornados, scorching heat, crime/murder rates (looking at you cartels), remoteness which can leave towns without food or water if supply line get interrupted (here in Alaska, along with the massive earthquakes), etc. “Just don’t live there” could be applied to literally every single place on the planet. Sometimes you gotta man the fuck up and deal with your problems instead running away from them like a Nancy. And Australians have a boat load of man-the-fuck-up on reserve. Blast a hole in the ground if it’s hot, build your shit on stilts if it floods regularly, build on rollers if there’s quakes, basement bunkers if you live in tornado country, etc. But it requires dealing with some kind of bullshit and just rolling them sleeves up.

Coober Pedy wasn't built to escape Armageddon. It was built to escape the heat. Miners prospected for opals there many decades ago and struck the motherlode that now supplies most of the world's opals. Miners decided staying in their mines was preferable to sweltering in tents and shacks. The mines became their homes then their homes became their mines as they sometimes found more opal veins in their kitchen and living room walls when excavating for additional living space. I think there is an episode on you tube of Back Roads Coober Pedy or just google Coober Pedy.

@@ronensuperexplainer This'll explain it. You Tube AUSTRALIAN OPAL MINING TOWNS. Miners excavated homes inside their mines to escape the extreme, oppressive heat scorching some of these towns. Also for the luxury of more convenient work places. They were never established for the purpose of survival shelters for an ' END OF THE WORLD ' scenario. Though a few people may have moved there more recently with that in mind. Everyone who chooses to stay there loves the casual work/life style of the neighbourhoods and the general community of close knit support.

Plus as someone who works night shift and gets home at 8AM, I love the idea of the terrible sun not being able to shine it’s terrible sun rays at me. I imagine it would be very nice and cool down there as well seeing as they’re a little ways underground, probably on well water as well. Not a bad deal.
