Great video. Just wanted to share that after my youngest daughter couldn't tell a friend what her father (I'm now retired) did for a living, I took a writing course and wrote my life story to share with my children and grandchildren. My sister wrote my mother's life story. Now I'm writing short stories about some of my ancestors based on facts I've gathered. I'm hoping my grandchildren will find those stories more interesting than looking at genealogy charts. Thanks again for all your KZfaq videos.

Great one Crista. The tips were correct. First you always talk to the still living, later on the rest. But keep in mind that what they tell you is not always correct but a mixture and regulate you get provided with wrong data. But again, this is the right way to start with. The death ones don"t run away. The most made error in genealogy is not talking with the ones who still are alive.

I gave my aunts and uncles a notebook full of random questions (I.e. favorite babysitter, first impressions of future spouses, fav/least fav sibling growing up) and then a few more in-depth ones like words you want to pass on. I also put in a couple story prompts to hopefully get that old story down, because some are really long!

On certain sides didn’t know much in the past as never asked when around or just family never talked about. I even have one line where never meet my biological grandpa. Have asked and heard random conversations about him over the years from immediate family and heard how great he was. at times at extended family events his close friends we’re there and me and my cousins were there and they were excited telling us their memories. They were excited to see his grand kids but also their memories just came out and wanted to share. Also went to my grandpas sisters house and asked the many questions I had and again so many stories came out that would have been lost and not just about my grandpa and immediate family but her family she never meet over seas her mom told her. Guess long story short it is never too late to ask as before you know it will be too late.

I enjoy watching your videos, Crista. I love your tips. I am stuck with a family line I was following back. I got the information I needed from the birth certificate, but the parents didn't raise the child. The only family story I got from the oldies is that the child was raised by a relative. At one time, the child was in a Home and then back into the family. It was later when the child was in his 20s when he popped up on public records. The funny thing is, I have the answers at my fingertips but, I wanted to be sure that I am following the right line. So, I got my partner to do his DNA. I am hoping it will finally solve that mystery :)

I just did what you suggested Sunday . We did a little "hen party" chicken lunch with the last surviving elder sisters (one 96 yo and the other 90 yo) I am not a blood relative but attended and clandestinely pulled out my android phone and recorded clips of their stories. The younger of the two was a sharp one and said "What are you doing there ? " (not in an angry way ;-) I'm her favorite neice - in - law)

If somebody has an heirloom they can hold in their hand, it's a helpful tool to get them to tell the story surrounding that object -- we own quilts, my grandmother's first cookbook, their handwritten recipes, a teacup, a book that my grandmother was given from her parents for Christmas, genealogy books, my husband's grandmother's cookie jar, my husband's grandfather's vest he was married in, baby socks, postcards of historic buildings, tracings of their hands, toys, etc.

Love your tutorials. One request: please ask Ancestry to include a chromosome browser. Surely Ancestry would rather introduce one than have customers choose every other major competitor that has one? ;) It'd help us figure out how we're related. Many people do not have trees, reply to messages and/or log in regularly.

Love your videos. In listening, it popped up a suggestion for Ancestry in my head. A person has a tree on ancestry. We click the user. It’s says something like “this person either has not done a DNA test or is not a match”. What would be more helpful would be to indicate if the person has a DNA test or not - definitively. Something like, “This user has not DNA tested”. Or “This user has DNA tested, but is not a match.”
@AncestryUS
@AncestryUS 5 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, we do not have that person's permission to share with others whether or not they have taken a DNA test. We only have permission to tell matches if they HAVE taken a DNA test.

Hi, I am having trouble creating a tree. I add all family from my dna matches family tree to my family tree by selecting "Save to Tree" when I do add a new person into my tree. It does not show into my tree. When I click find person then at the bottom of the list it will say list of all people. I see everyone on that list but not appearing into my family tree. Its all blank. When I get hints and save those then nothing appears on my family tree. I am lost and don't know how to create or make all people to appear into my family tree. Thank You..
@AncestryUS
@AncestryUS 5 жыл бұрын
When you add a person to your tree using the "Save to Tree" feature, it creates a "floating" person. You then have to find that person in your List of All People, open up their profile, click on EDIT | Edit Relationships and connect them to their family members. Once you have the family members connected and have them connected to your common ancestors, you will see them in your family tree. Does that make sense?
@tiggeer88
@tiggeer88 5 жыл бұрын
Ancestry thank you. I have a questions when you receive hints and add those hints - does that mean they are really related to you? Once you add all the required hints it might say great grandparents or paternal grandparents? Just say I add anyone as my grandfather by choosing from the list to add into my family tree then afterwards it would say paternal grand parent after i added the hints. Are they my grand parents or not everything we might add not be related to those ancestors.

I was watching Christa's video about Family Tree Maker (2013). I am using the 2017 version and have come across a problem which I have been unable to resolve. Maybe you can assist. I have a distant ancestor who was married twice and has 2 families. Somehow, I have created, unknowingly, 2 unknown spouses and have been unable to delete them. I have tried everything I know how and have managed to "damage" my lineage. The info is still there but not connected. Thanks in advance

how do I set my family tree in the pedigree view PERMANTELY?? I don't like the other view at all.
@AncestryUS
@AncestryUS 5 жыл бұрын
The family view versus pedigree view is a sticky setting controlled at a browser level by cookies. So, once you set it in your tree, it will always open up that way in the future. However, if you use a different browser or if you delete cookies, it will go back to the default, which is family view.
