Nice Defender, Stephan is lovely guy & obviously likes good music as well as Defenders too. I guess you can only squeeze so much juice out of a 300 TDI. UK Military had 2.5 NA Diesel @85BHP so no wonder they had a TC ratio of 1.67:1 My 300Tdi 110 SW has a Turbo Techinics VNT Turbo ( no problems so far 🤞) and Tuned with 1 bar boost max and EGT less than 720C. This is just about enough with 1.41:1 TC Ratio up long inclines when fully loaded and RTT on top but mine is about 3000Kg, mid range power probably no more power but boost comes on a bit earlier and lasts maybe a little bit longer so it’s smoother delivery & “slightly” wider power band.

Very scientific :-) I often wondered what is the right LR tire size. I see some come with 205x16 , some with the 235-85x16 and then remember the early defender came with the nichelin bias 7.50x16 that is taller than 235 tire and because of the bias has a longer footprint = traction , without airing down and lose height. So did they all have the same transfer or how?

The very early 90 had the smaller tyres, as they were a continuation of the 88 inch - then they all were fitted with stock 235/85/16

Hi mike Ive got a td5 defender and its difficult to change down from 5th to 4th/3rd. Upshifts are fine Syncro? Enjoying the videos Dave.

Sounds like a typical 4th gear synchro is worn - common

Is that synro one of the easiest to replace on shaft?

Yes! It is behind the primary motion shaft (input) You can remove the main casing (remember there are 2 bolts holding an oval plate on the top which needs to be removed) And carefully remove the cover - now to blow my own trumpet, this is what you need my thin dismantling tool to carefully remove the cover without damaging the RTV seal holding the aluminium extension housing on

@BritannicaRestorations HI Mike I'm in the UK. I looked at your stuff for sale. But with postage and taxes it gets expensive. Drove through td5 last night and it's behaving? I did change the oil which looked horrible. Last owner didn't look after it. Very poor mantinance 😕 I've ordered baulk rings from ashcroft just got get motivated enough to pull gearbox some point.

That looks like a marsland chassis if it is they are the best I fit a lot of them just doing a 300tdi 90 moment

It's a 2001 Td5 chassis but with a 300Tdi fitted (Rest of World spec) and a steel tank, but a Rover axle at the back Must have been a parts bin special
