Stephanie Land is the author of the New York Times bestseller, MAID: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive, which is now a successful Netflix series. Carol Fitzgerald had the pleasure of interviewing Stephanie in two pre-publication interviews in 2019, when MAID was selected as a Bookreporter Bets On Selection.
Netflix recently released a brilliant 10-part series called MAID with Margaret Qualley based on the book, which is back on the bestseller list.
Before the book, Stephanie Land wrote a piece on Vox that went viral, and that led literary agents to ask for book on the topic. She discusses her meetings with the producers and writers of the Netflix show, where she shared both memories and photos, and she talks about scenes that still resonate with her. Stephanie and Carol talk about elements that enhanced the show that weren't in the book. They catch up on where she is now in life and what she's writing next.
Books discussed in this episode:

This show changed my life 100%! Thank you SO much Stephanie! The Family Law Court system abuses the victims and rewards the abuser!

PTSD and the grieving process are like that. It's complicated/multi-layered, in my experience. I SOOO wished that I'd have stood up to my gaslighting/violent ex-husband (and I beat myself up for that - for years.) BUT NOW ... I realize that getting away alive is more important. THANK YOU for surviving, writing so well about it, and being you :) You have a beautiful heart and grit!

Yes, emotional and verbal abuse does the same damage as physical abuse. Education much needed about this.

The author is gracious and polite, even when the interviewer makes this an interview about housekeeping and welfare instead of her book. Not one question about her writing process. Stephanie Land is, after all, a writer.

And also many questions about the Netflix series instead of focusing on the book.

Have been watching MAID on Netflix, borrowed the book from the library, and now searching out Stephanie’s interviews. That’s how much this story has affected me. I came from an upper middle class “white” environment, so what has really affected me, is Stephanie’s ultra effort to NOT make this about how she rose from the ashes because she was “better” than those other poor people. Living in Michigan, I am surrounded by people who suffered much like she did, but have this strange anger and distrust of the poor, despite the fact that they were once there and in the same place she was. No one has asked this question, but I would love to know how and why she took the perspective that she actually had it easier - in some ways - than folks like her of color, or a different ethnicity. As a retired school teacher, I am looking for ways that I can help further social justice. I am absolutely thrilled that she seems to want this too.

Amazing interview! Yet there are incredible judgements regarding those who aren't aware of how damn difficult these situations really are. Grateful for this series! Hopefully, this will educate those arrogant, and jugmental assments of people who's lives are a reality.

No ones talk about narcissistic behavior. Many women of all social status and ethnicity have experienced a relationship with a narcissist. I understand that wasn’t the main focus of the book but that is for sure a topic that needs to be addressed. Love this book and the way that was projected in the show. So on point in many different ways. It brought lots of feelings such as frustration and anxiety that I had to stop watching it for few days but it was simply a good reminder that I was also a survivor of a not just the father of my two boys but a survivor of the system. Thank you

I have read the book and I believe that everyone in government should read this story of how hard it is to find and get help from this land of plenty. Stephany is right when poor people are prejudged that they really are not entitled to this help when they finally ask for it.

I have an English student in Brazil who told me about this and was excited to get the chance to hear from the author only a few days later. I thought both women were thoughtful and personable and appreciate real discussion around emotional abuse, poverty and privilege. Thank you so much.

I was once told by a wise mentor "Perspective. If you were to put the entire world's problems in one giant pile, you would take your own back." We often think of our own problems as the worst, but if we expand our minds by learning the struggles of other people, we would find gratitude in what we still have and be more kind to those who are less fortunate than us.

Thank you for bringing this out. I feel like I have lived a lot of the scenes in your life, white like u too. I still live this, except I have found the internet to sell on and have a union for better wages as a caregiver. I did not have this when my children were young. Internet only came in in late 90's, I will be checking out your series and listening to your interviews. I live close to Port Townsend and there are lots of women and children here in similar circumstances. Subsidized housing saved my family and gave us stability and some security. I got some college education as well, just not enough to get a well paying job. I did become computer literate, which has been life saving! I have CPTSD so that has made survival more difficult overall. I have been able to carry on and improve my life, becoming financially independent. I thank God for the internet, which helps me see the world!

I just finished the series and it was so triggering and also cathartic. The desperation, the humiliation and shame, all of the rocks and hard places with jobs, childcare, and housing. The way that people will treat you unfairly when they know you don't have other options but also how the kindness of strangers can lift you up. I was a young single mother and I didn't realize how much trauma I still carry from living this for years until I watched this series.

Hi, Stephanie, I enjoyed this interview and so happy for you and how life is turning out for you. When you mentioned the new book you are working on "Class" and how you feel that there is intention from the establishments of keeping low income people out of the University, you hit it on the nail. I am presently studying paleography with a focus on Latin and as I have been attempting to transcribe different writing styles such as court hand, secretary writing etc., some things never change, as this era also did their best not to help common people have easier access to education to rise above their poverty.

I held to my belief that as a full time mother while my daughter was under 5 years old, that I was equally valued as the full time mother who is married to an affluent man. Dignity comes from within.

Disgraceful interviewer. I think she repeatedly drew attention to Stephanie as a housemaid and not as an author. Putting her in her place?

That was so intense🥺. Watching on Netflix, crying from the first episode, I found myself in all these very familiar situations. 🥲I don't know from where we have such power as women, but I know those kind of scenarios are lived my millions. It's so sad and unfair that we are so judged, so blamed all the time, for wanting more, for fighting, for that huge desire to create a better life for ourselves and our children. God bless that kind of woman! Stay strong🙏

The interviewer is so bad she seems like she doesn't know what question to ask . She seems like she's faking listening to the answer of the author. Maybe she's thinking about which question to ask next. Why is that woman having such an important job which you can't do it

It's not that her struggles are worth less, it's that she had privilege that others don't based on race. Everyone can have privilege, no matter their situation.
