The Grateful Dead pool of songs are deep and wide. They all come from different musical styles so their songs are often a mixture of different genres. As others mentioned best to find a live version, that said every time they played a song, they would play it differently They brought a lot of new ideas to the music world, leading in sound technology, the first jam band, known for their long concerts. Their relationship with their fans, known as Dead Heads, is like no other band. Even today the Dead Head community continues to grow.

Grateful Dead were amazing in their day. They formed in 1965 and have many great hits...including this one, which came out in 1987. Unfortunately we lost the lead singer Jerry Garcia in 1995. Great reaction.

this was their biggest hit after almost 30 years as a band. the touch of grey is definitely a nod to their age.

It was written after Jerry literally almost died in a diabetic coma and had to relearn how to play music.

Probably the most recorded band in history,as they allowed their fans to bring in recording equipment and literally take the shows home with them. There are actually several archive sites online dedicated to the vast library of shows and the oft times multiple recordings (audience recordings, recordings straight off the soundboard,"matrix" dubs of both combined) of each. THE all-time "rabbit hole" band.

Proud to have been a Dead Head for a long time, first show 1980, and over many miles and many smiles. Got to see the boys from Maine to Florida, to Wisconsin, New York, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Washington, D.C., Ohio, Pennsylvania. Loved every second and enjoyed every show. Touch of Grey came out late in their career, 1987, and was their only Top Ten Hit, it made it to #9. Their song catalog is quite varied, rock, folk, gospel, bluegrass, psychodelia, jamming, and even orchestral. i just call it Americana. Thousands of concerts and millions of fans. Grateful Dead.

a verse from one of their songs , music never stopped} a band beyond description is truely who they were. being born in nthe summer of love i have seen many musical acts. many of the big names, from my first paul mcartney, pink floyd, rush , to hard rock metallica,ac/dc, iron maiden,to country like the judds, reba, shawnia to rap like NWA, ice t even lisa lisa. and tge number one thing i noticed at a GD or DEAD &CO show is that you never see a fight or dipute. and amasing thing is you can have a spot up front with a blanket there and go trip around and come back and your spot will still be there, i am gonna leave it there cause i can go on and on

Loved your reactions. Jay looked like he was ready to party. Steph was a little tense, thinking we had a job to do. Yet, by the end, she was grooving with it along with her husband. That was what the Grateful Dead were all about, making people forget their worries in life and having a little party. Never will there be another group like the Dead. Born in the '60's when many people were afraid of WWIII, young people came to S.F. part rebellion, part adventure, part experimentation with drugs and maybe a better life style, amazing things occurred. Love was in the air, all around. From that came the best music ever from then unknown musicians. There wasn't any ego or competition. I heard a couple of guitarists talking after their gigs and were just jamming, "Hey man, I like your rift, I was trying to get it but it doesn't sound right." He plays it. "Its like this" and he shows him. "Cool" "Can I use part of it? I'll change it so I wouldn't be stealing." "Yea, sure, go for it!" It was all about the sound, the music and delivering the messages of the '60's. The Grateful Dead were all about the music, more specifically the music of the working class and the people on the street. They hated the commercialization of music. People of today have ruined that spirit with their glittery super stars changing outrageous prices to see them. You could go to a Grateful Dead concert dressed as you are. If they had the room, like in an open air concert, you could dance around and just have fun. The last concert I saw, we had gotten there late, all the tickets were sold and the Dead saw us and told the producers to let us in or they'd stop playing! They did. I didn't have one drop of alcohol or drugs and still got a 'contact high'. Swear to God! I intend to write about my experiences of Haight Street during the Summer of '67. The infamous Hell's Angel Sonny Barger said it right. The media had gotten it all wrong. "Over in Berkeley it was anti-war protests but that was a upper class thing, on Haight Street it was lower class and people were there for the party." Me and my friends hated to be call Hippies. That was a media invention. "A Touch of Grey" seems subtle at first, but the the more you listen the more you get. Both of you 'got it' on a lot of levels. The Grateful Dead were always changing their music a little, searching for a better sound. No two concerts were the same. If one member was inspired they let him roll with it. It all depended what the crowd was digging that night. To adlib like a jazz player means you have to be a great musician, and they all were.

Silly little stuff. Their most commercial success. Filmed late at night after a long live concert. They re opened the gates and let the crowd back in. Fun really. Was a little cold though. Great memory. Monterey area.

First thing I am a deadhead. Meaning huge fan of this band. This video was wonderful. Grateful dead is like licorice you either love licorice or hate licorice. Good vibes spread always at the shows and the band was always trying to move the human race a step forward by giving people freedom to take the music to different places. Just wonderful you guys took the time to be open to the dead.

This was much later in their career - you will love them- they actually play their instruments very well, 2 drummers insane keyboard bad A$$ bass and Bobby and Jerry singing and playing the drums. One classic is Scarlet Begonias I think u will really dig. They never ever played the same set. The have such a vast repertoire that each show was different. The also allowed fans to tape their shows- they are real musicians and people. Have fun - loved the reaction

Touch of grey, was there first and only top ten song . (1987) in the life of the 30 years of the original band. All original sence the 60s This band was 1965 to 1995 . Check out the martin Scorsese documentary on the band called ,,,A long strange trip . Most dedicated fans in music history. Called Deadheads would quit there jobs just to follow them from show to show for years on end. Also check the Jerry Garcia band,,witch is very bluesy, jazzy ,funky rocky all rolled into one. I'm a life long fan (Deadhead) and I could go on and on and on about this band. And a last note some of there longer songs are known to put you in a trance. Lol listen at your own risk. Lol
