I made a similar one up to the Reanne Evan’s one to practice cannons. Cut blue shots into middle pocket focusing on stun and side to cannon 5 balls spread along bulk cushion. Every time you hit a colour on the cushion you take it away. Aim to hit all 5 balls in the fewest amount of shots. Practice from both sides of the table.

I'd think it would be quite hard for a top class player to come up with the helpful advice for a beginner, if they don't do coaching with the beginners, at best they'll remember something from the times when they were beginners themselves :-)) The level gap is too big for it to be easy for them to imagine what does a beginner struggle with the most, what is the most important thing at that level of play

I would like to defend the decel vs pace. Don't have much snooker experience, but to me as an engineer this makes a lot of sense. It's true that impact is very short, but I would expect that if you hit the white at the same speed but acceletating, time of contact will be longer than when decelerating. Still short, but I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be as much as twice as long. I wouldn't expect it to have much effect on cue ball speed, but I would expect it to make a big difference in how much spin is imparted on the cue ball.
@alienck3901
@alienck3901 6 ай бұрын
They were talkin abt stun shot tht doesnt require spin on white ball
@piokul
@piokul 6 ай бұрын
@@alienck3901 Yeah, I agree it won't matter there. Just wanted to mention where it would make a difference, because learning about accelerating the cue during impact helped me to understand imparting decent spin, while the often used expression 'strike through the cue ball' didn't do much for me.
@AD-kv9kj
@AD-kv9kj 6 ай бұрын
Yep. Smoothly "pinching" or gripping the cueball with the tip is a vital fundamental skill to learn to manoeuvre and control the cue ball. Keeping your grip only tight enough to stop the cue slipping out of your hand on the strike is important, to allow the cue that tiny bit of spring/buffering when the tip contacts the cue ball. When you get this kind of delicate strike right, you can hear the difference too as the balls seem to *click* sweetly on impact rather than *thunk*. @@piokul

Michael is 100% correct on his explanation on deceleration. As long as the contact point is at the speed, decel or accel doesn't matter. Think of a boxer making contact. The accel or decel doesn't matter as long as the contact is at the correct speed.
@101spirited
@101spirited 6 ай бұрын
Nup, you want the your tip to be in contact with the cue ball for as long as possible. From the first instant of contact the cue ball is trying to get away. You want to push the cue through at the same rate to hold onto it. Compare the feel and work you get on the ball from a sweetly timed shot to one you have stabbed at. Only one of them you have accelerated though properly.

Holt was making a fair point even if fairly pedantic. If a ball doesnt reach the pocket and has been struck properly, it's simply not been hit hard enough. Deceleration seems to be blamed for all shots that dont reach but if a player strikes it correctly and has accelerated through impact, you cant say hes decelerated, hes simply not hit it hard enough. I think deceleration is used as just too broad a reason which is his point. If you have decelerated and its caused you to miss cue then yeah, blame it on deceleration. If you simply havent hit it hard enough then, whether you decelerate or accelerate through impact them you simply havent hit it hard enough. Golf is the best example of where deceleration is a common issue, you very rarely want to decelerate through impact. When chipping for example, if you decelerate the result is often a mis hit shot where you fat it. If you hit it squarely the likeliness is you wont have decelerated even if you dont hit it hard enough. Snooker its just too sweeping for a bad shot.
@sjake8308
@sjake8308 6 ай бұрын
Holt's general point is that folk worry too much about stuff that doesn't really matter. Snooker's a hard enough game without filling your head with a bunch of mumbo jumbo every time you prepare to take a shot.
