The Dalai Lama is going rogue and suggesting that he may not be reincarnated and China is not feeling super chill about it.

+The Solmanian It does sound pretty ridiculous, doesn't it? But, sadly, it's feasible. All the Chinese government has to do is bribe, threaten and coerce the individuals running the test to pick a pro-china kid they already groomed. The fraud would be lauded as the next Llama, and the real reincarnation (if there is such a thing, let's assume for the sake of their faith there is) would never be discovered.

It's a bit late to post this, but the Chinese already have done so with another incarnate lama (there are different types of lamas aside from the Dalai Lama): "In 1995, Chinese authorities seized the boy the Dalai Lama identified as the next Panchen Lama, the 11th in a distinguished line of incarnate lamas. The Chinese then installed their own candidate, claiming that the emperors of China in Beijing had set up a system to select religious leaders in Tibet. (The whereabouts of the Dalai Lama-nominated Panchen Lama are a state secret in China. It is possible that, if freed from captivity, he would follow the example of the Karmapa, a lama who represents another Buddhist tradition in Tibet, who, though officially recognized by the Chinese authorities, escaped to India in 1999.)" www.nytimes.com/2015/12/06/magazine/the-last-dalai-lama.html?_r=0

Most of this is true, and it is nice to see a celebrity, non-Buddhist, who knows what he is talking about when he speaks about Buddhism. However, I must clear up one misconception. Buddha was not fat. The fat guy is a Chinese God who they associate with Buddha. But in South East Asia, where an older form of Buddhism is praciced, he is never depicted as fat. This makes sense. He spent a good amount of time as an aethsetic and almost died of starvation. He realized that this was the wrong path and started eating one meal a day of whatever people gave him. The Dali Lama also eats one meal a day. I tried living as the monks due, eating two meals a day, but I smuggled some food in for dinner, and when it an out, I had to leave. Monkhood ain't for sissys.

+Ethan Davidson India is the country Buddhism originated from, the mans name was Sidhartha, he was suppose to be the 8th reincarnation of the God Vishnu, he was a prince with long ears. Sidhartha gave up his riches and decided to follow his own path, so when he died the people that followed him became Buddhist, something completely different from hinduism, and it then moved towards china.
@milascave29 жыл бұрын
+david singh Most of what you say is true. However, the Idea of Buddha being an incarnation of Vishnu is a much later idea developed by Hindus to assimilate Buddha back into Hinduism. Buddhists do not believe this.

If I was Letterman, I be stoked that they got someone kick ass to replace me. It was kind of like when Drew Carey took over for Bob Barker, he didn't try to outdo or imitate Barker; he simply tried to honor the man, while still being himself. Very few people can follow a legend, but Colbert seems to be pulling it off with no problems (probably because he was already a legend himself). Now I'm curious to see who they get to try and take over for Alex Trebek. That's going to be another incredibly tough act to follow.

Ethan Davidson More precisely, Buddha (i.e. Siddhartha Gautama) taught that all of his enlightenment came from his own human endeavors, that only humans can become Buddhas, and that deities can't give one enlightenment. Though this primarily concerns the Buddhist sect that is closest to the original teachings (i.e. Theravada). Some of the Mahayana sects have either different variations of this concept or are overall closer to the other religions. ^^

A lot of errors here but funny nevertheless. 1. The Laughing Buddha or Ho Tai is not directly related to the historical (4th of this age) Siddhārtha Gautama, Shakyamuni Buddha. Ho Tai was, according to one legend, a monk who would always carry a bag full of sweets, which he gave out whenever he met up with children. He was always joyful & happy , laughing & because he was a monk, & because some Asian languages use the same word for monk as they do for Buddha, there has been confusion that he is a form of the historical Buddha. Another theory has it that he was originally a fertility God, or a God of Prosperity, his round belly was a symbol for a bountiful harvest. As Buddhism spread into China from India, the local population accepted him as a saint, or a manifestation of the Future (5th called Maitreya) Buddha. In Japan he is known as Hotei and is considered one of the Seven Gods of Fortune. It is not uncommon for shopkeepers & other people in general to rub the belly of Ho Tai in order to bring good luck or improve sale. Apparently some Feng Shui practitioners believe that using an image of Ho Tai can help direct energy. 2. Tibet is not just the supposedly Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR) which equates to Ü-Tsang (དབུས་གཙང་Central & West), plus Amdo ( ཨ༌མདོ HH the 14th Dalai Lama born at Takster there & his is no way Chinese) & Kham (ཁམསEastern Tibet). 3. For info HH the 14th Dalai Lama is the spiritual head of the Gelugspa order, HHthe 41st Sakya Trizin the head of the Sakya order, HH the 17th Karmapa (who escape occupied Tibet at end of 1999 beginning of 2000; the Kagyu lineage's 2nd Karmapa (Karma Pakshi) started this type of recognised succession of Tibetan tulku teachers)head of the Kagyu lineage & Taklung Tsetrul Rinpoche head of the most ancient of the schools the Nyingmap lineage. HH the 14th Dalai Lama brought all 4 lineages together in the The Tibetan diaspora.

Adviser: "Just tell them you're the last Dalai Lama. It makes you seem more important and will leave room for there possibly not being some kid who can pass the tests we made up." Dalai: "Will they believe that?" Adviser: "They're religious. They'll believe any BS you tell them."

Plus this is not the second Dalai Lama, if anything Tibet and the Dalai Lamas of the past have all had conflicts with China and now that the government is literally trying to strong arm him into reincarnating just so they can have another political puppet to "unify" China is just stupidity on China's part, the solution here is that the Tibetan monks now stop looking for the Lama all together so that China won't have another puppet to encourage Chinese rule over a region that people did not want to be part of China in the first place.
