And Belgium. By dad got pulled over by a policeman in Belgium, my dad despite understanding French, spoke in Dutch, the policeman by right should have been able to speak Flemish (Belgian dialectic of Dutch) but couldn't, so he had to let my dad go.

@AbolK2 I'm 2 years late, but since she said the policeman should've been able to speak Flemish, obviously the scene happened in the district of Bruxelles Capitale, where it is mandatory to speak both languages for such job ;-)

Because they are professional actors. Learning a wide variety of dialects and accents, including foreign languages, is part of their trade: just like opera singers.

@@Jimba93 But when Stephen Fry came out to ask her as to what she wanted, he used the informal 'Qu'est-ce que tu-as", instead of "qu'est-ce que vous voulez?" Using "Tu", to somepne unknown in the french language is a sign of disrespect when it is a stranger.

The meeting of Fry and Laurie was most fortuitous. Comedy ensued for decades afterward. If you're not familiar with them in Jeeves and Wooster, take the time to find them, and watch them do P. G. Wodehouse. One of the best all time tv series.

The older I get, the more disgusting I think this sketch and these two. The humour is based on the fact that an average English person of working class background does not understand foreign languages. How funny.... This is a sort of in-joke type for the dwellers of leafy Highgate streets.
