We citizens are part of a modern triumvirate of power, and we underestimate the power and influence we can wield. The other two stakeholders - business and government - need our consent (conscious or ignorant) to achieve their ambitions (noble or ignoble). They will not relinquish the pursuit of their negative vested interests unless we make it too difficult (unprofitable) for them to continue. Nor it seems will most of them choose positive, more-than-profit motives unless we send uncompromising signals as voters and customers. The challenge is that we need to step up, recognise what is at stake, accept that we may ourselves be inconvenienced in the short term, and demonstrate that we not only have power, but are willing to exercise it. The good news is that we actually hold a majority vote. It's time to overcome our collective 'learned helplessness', resist finger-pointing or apathy and decide it's time to take bold, life-changing action. It is going to take all of us doing so, consistently, repeatedly, to get out of the pickle we're in. It's not going to be sexy, exciting or cool, and sometimes it won't even be fun - but as any parent knows, lots of important, rewarding work goes unapplauded - but you still do it, because it matters, and because it's your decision that it matters. Mother Earth, nature, Gaia - is taking a hit thanks to us. But this is a fight for our survival, not the planet's. We need nature and the Earth's complex and amazing life systems far more than they need us. We've known this for a long time. Now we need to understand it, and act accordingly. It will be an empowering transformation.

Well said Stephen - XR are doing a very difficult job of trying to raise awareness of the crisis we are in. The politicians are their primary target as they are the ones who will have the biggest impact with the right policies. It is also a great time for us to all look inwardly at how we live our lives and make some necessary changes. It won’t help if we all point fingers at each other but accept that we are all in this together and the only way to tackle this impending disaster is to go hard and fast to sort this mess out. So - support XR or better still join them and let’s get our Government to ‘pull their finger out’!

Well Said Stepen Fry. What makes me mad is The Goverment keeps saying they are doing something and they are not. Where I live 3 years spent installing gas mains for 3,000 proposed new homes which are going to be heated by gas boilers Why? If I install a geo heat pump which cost about the same as a gas boiler why must I pay about £26,000 for the infrastructure myself up front. I did not pay for the gas mains except by taxes. A gas boiler discharges 1 Ton of Co2 per year the geo heat pump ZERO. A No Brainer

It is so refreshing to hear an enigmnatic and highly intelligent perspective on "what shall we do". XR have raised the profile and awarness of the "trouble ahead" for all our descendants. We either are selfish ignorant and uncaring, or we take significant remedial action to leave a "pleasent habitable world" for our chidren and future generations. Great damage is now showing itself to be upon us and only as the IPCC says "significant action" is now needed to avoid catastrophic consequences of Climate Change. Humanity is now at the end of the plank. We do big things owe become shark food as we condemn our children to an inhospitable future. Areas of the Earth 00are becoming unihabitable as we speak and we are guaranteed this will worsen every year we dilly and dally, huff and puff. We need action, rebellion and probably a revolution to take back control of our Earth before the "Planet Munchers" turn us all into fertilliser.

Thank you Stephen and yes this is the principle reason I support XR too, its organising to include everyone in decisions, giving us the opportunity to mitigate our demise humanely. Not everyone will understand this at first, including many in XR, as many still think banning fossil fuels will be adequate to save us it will not. It'll be yet another horrendous shock to realise that human extinction will occur unless we use MEER. Look it up.

@@hackandslash873 Hi Jason apologies for the incomplete suggestion or reference to it. Its 'Meer reflection' that you will need to search for not just 'Meer' its probably and possibly the only way we will be able to control further heating of the planet but it needs to applied urgently before even this becomes too difficult to apply. Essentially its thorough and well researched way to reflect solar energy away from the biosphere. There will inevitably some difficulties and unforseen issues with it as the planet and ecosystem is a finely tuned system but what else is there to save us? Youll need to read and possibly watch some videos to understand the extent to which this has been carefully researched and proposed by the team in a leading US University, I believe and as far as I know theres no interest in attempting to profit from the proposal this is a survival issue after all. The solar reflection / radiation management must be accompanied by changes to the way we do things as suggested by Dr. Tao so its not just some bonkers engineering plan. Dr. Tao is the lead scientist and I believe the originator or lead of this idea/ proposal. Good luck in your own exploration of it

All the battles that we as a species have conducted has been a build up to this final conflict, this planet has bared the brunt of our wars, this is no small talk its damn serious because we don't seem to understand we must choose when to stop because evolution just keeps evolving no matter what & we the apex here need to make a decision on what we really want & if we really care, everyone is unique & there has always been that special person for good or for bad thats rescued the situation or just by good luck or divine intervention we have persevered, we just have to stop causing the planet to push us away because we appear to want to separate when we are all part of this & connected to everything & each other & this is gonna take all of us 1 way or the other to get through this & the worse thing about all this is that Earth just spins & sustains life & yes there have been natural disasters & nature can be blamed for been the biggest taker of life but Naure is what gives everyone & everything life. Dont underestimate global warming & ask yourself, are we really this fickle for going along with this or is this that we going along with driving us to extinction because we like a bunch of junkies addicted to something, know this too, nothing can achieve this if we don't allow it 1st so come together, wizen up & do something about this because we are more than capable of achieving whatever it takes. The answer to all of these human-created 'problems' is understanding the one thing that we neglect, which gets us into this mess in the first place, and which is also the one thing that virtually no one has any time for, and that is truth, and how it may be understood.. "History abundantly shows that people's views of the universe are bound up with their views of themselves and of their society. @@JeffVader it's a risk, but for now the legal risks are higher than the physical ones. Early on we got some fair criticism about not properly informing people of the legal risks, so we now have a website called "Informed Dissent" which covers as much of the legal side as possible. I don't agree with every action. The Canning Town train incident was a bad idea and most (80%) voted against it but it wasn't a binding vote -- they didn't break a *rule* of XR but I wish they'd not done it. The Heathrow Drones thing was also very controversial -- I opposed it and in the end the people who did it formed a new group called Burning Pink. I'm happy with that... it means it's not happening under our banner. The police in London in 2019 were very disciplined which meant mostly holding the line, but when they were told to bust up our stuff they did it fast and it was a shock. Turns out protesting major banks seems to be the thing that changed their orders... but we'll never know for sure. Ironically that makes us MORE likely to protest banks!

@@JeffVader I'm not involved in action planning but I believe we usually have a police liaison team because while what our people do is intended to be disruptive it's very important not to put anybody at risk except the individual activist. No plan is idiot proof and there's always idiots in any large group but when I was in London in 2019 my experience was that XR self policed remarkably well. It was far different to a disorganised mob. Contrary to what was reported we design actions to avoid blocking "blue light vehicles". In 2020 there was once incident of an ambulance having to re-route which was because the police chose to "kettle" a bicycle based moving protest (people wanted things they could do while social distancing for obvious reasons). The police unexpectedly blocked all the cyclists on a bridge they were trying to cross and kept them there for hours and presumably that info failed to get to that ambulance driver in time. Other than that our protests should be no more disruptive than a carnival or marathon which happen in London a few times a year...

I know right, if only Mr Stephen had left an exemplary lifestyle everything would be fine right now. I'm also a big proponent of arguing that you have to be perfect before you can change the system. After all, how is an imperfect person ever able to have any respectable thoughts worth listening to ever? You can only critique football matches if you're a top international player, only pass judgement on restaurant food if you yourself are a Michelin star chef. Gatekeep any actual power to only those who are fundamentally perfect. I 100% agree, especially because I know I am perfect myself.

And the Chinese aren't "people just trying to get about their day"? The democratic space in which XR UK operates is the UK. So ofcourse they talk about the UK. Well Mr. Fry it seems do not respond to direct messages on twitter and you have to be approved follower list, which I incidentally think is _great_ - instead of having millions of useless messages. But I don't follow anyone so I am kinda stuck ;-) Anyhow, I am surprised XR could not think of better way to take his help. Here is what I could think of (apart from having ability to respond to messages sent to them through their own site :-) ) I have watched "Advice to young people as they face annihilation" by "Roger Hallam". There are two videos on youtube. And they have been in total viewed for 115K times. That is the biggest circulation of XR I have seen. What got to me was description how things are going to get - "The Real World" part I think - one that includes what does it mean by crisis and actual temperature change. XR could have Steven talk on that. They also need to make that part as a separate video. In today's world where you are proud you can write "Peace and War" in 240 characters, it's miracle you have 115K views. They also need to that same part reviewed and approved by scientists and have them refer to that smaller video, at least the temperature change part. I really hope XR gets much more traction.

Non-violent (!) disruptive protests historically have proven to be the most effective for political change. If XR doesn't disrupt anything, why would politicians feel the need to listen? It's similar to strikes. That being said, there are a lot of different ways you could contribute to XR/similar organisations. You don't have to protest if you don't feel comfortable, and everyone that sticks to their ground rules (no violence, etc) is welcome to join in any way they want! I recommend you to check out XR in your area and ask why XR do what they do in the way they do it, and find out if you can help somehow! Good luck :D
