Who Do You Think You Are?

10 жыл бұрын

In Britain in the 1920's there was a campain in Britain to support homegrown sugar beet. The are around Bury St Edmunds provided perfect growing conditions. So when a new factory was built in 1925, Martin and his colleague were invited to help set it up. Stephen is off to visit a local farmer to find out more about the sugar trade.
Stephen Fry seems as English as tweed, silver toast racks and the London black cab he can be seen driving around the streets of the capital. However, Stephens ancestry is in fact of Jewish European descent.
The story that pricked Stephen's interest the most when researching his family was that of his beloved maternal grandfather, Martin Newman. Martin's actual name was Neumann. By the time of his death, when Stephen was just eleven years old, his flamboyance had made an indelible mark on his grandson.
Stephen hopes to discover more about Martin's life and what happened to the other branches of the Neumann family?

That is just so funny and brilliant, that photo of Martin, Stephen's grandfather, in plus fours! Brilliant, he sounds like quite a character, you can definitely see why Stephen was close to his grandfather, if he wore that to work a lot, perhaps or not every day back then, who knows.

Bury is a beautiful little town, it was one of my favorites when I toured East Anglia in 2004.

Having fields of sugar beets and factories to make refined sugar out of them is just an ordinary, unspectacular thing for me as a German. For years and years I used to pass a sugar beet field every day just outside my home town. The (once) biggest sugar producing factory in the world "SüdZucker" is just a 30 minutes' drive away.

It looks like the bits where Stephen is tracing his father's family have been removed.

Well, the local man also calls it Bury, so it's probably safe to assume the locals don't mind. :D

Thank the fates that Martin got offered that job, because, for sure, we wouldn't be blessed with SF, and the world would be a whole lot sadder

The grandchild of an industrialist pokes fun at the factory workings that made him. I adore Fry. But as a blue working class prol, who history won’t remember, it’s delicious in irony.
