"The Jolly Corner" by Henry James is my all-time favorite doppelganger story. "The Willows" is Algernon Blackwood's single greatest scary story.

I've already read these haunting tales many times and have them collected on my bookshelves. I nonetheless purchased this audiobook because hearing Stephen Fry read these classic ghost stories is a delight I can't pass up. Excellent choices. I would have been shocked had he not mentioned MR James. I first read his work when I was in high school. I have no idea how the school library in my small-town Ohio school acquired the book but I'm glad they did. There are a few channels here on KZfaq that specialize in narrating Victorian and early 20th century ghost stories. Even if that's not something you like, it's a good place to find good obscure authors and ghost stories. It's also a good place to find lesser known ghost stories written by famous authors like Lovecraft.

This is a pleasant surprise and having paranormal experiences myself it's greatly appreciated to hear stories from credible witnesses. I do believe 90% of paranormal videos are fake but some are so unexplained that it's brilliant but when you experience something on a personal level it can be absolutely terrifying.

Poe for sure. The Monkey's Paw by W.W. Jacobs (1902) is one I still find quote chilling. I think the 'resurrectionists' Burke and Hare killed some 16 people as part of their business model. Donating one's body to medical science wasn't a thing back then. A hanged criminal was an occasional legal source of material for medical school surgeons/lecturers. I'd imagine that some of the 'buyers' took note that many of the cadavers delivered were unusually fresh. Indeed, rigor mortis hadn't even set in yet. Respect to Master Fry from Ireland.

A few stories by 'Saki' are worth mentioning, if not strictly ghost stories. 'Sredni Vashtar' and 'The Music on the Hill' are great dark stories; if you want darkness mixed with humor, 'Gabriel-Ernest' and 'The Open Window' are masterpieces of that genre.

I think it will be a treat to hear Stephen Fry read ghost stories. Three of these (The Empty House, The Judge's House, and The Body Snatcher) can also be found in The Haunted Looking Glass, a collection of ghost stories selected by artist Edward Gorey, that master of creepy illustrations. The collection includes stories by Charles Dickens, Edith Nesbit, Wilkie Collins, M.R. James, and others. I had a copy when I was a child, and loved both the stories and the drawings by Mr Gorey at the beginning of each. Amazon carries a reasonably-priced reprint edition. By the way, if you like funny ghost stories, Canadian author Robertson Davies published a collection of 6 titled High Spirits. He wrote them to entertain his graduate students each Halloween (he taught literature at the U of Toronto). I never actually read them in print: only listened to an audio version on cassette tape, read (quite charmingly) by Christopher Plummer.

Much though I enjoyed Stephen's discussion about the stories, I wish that he'd have read a short story at the end of his speech. I appreciate that he's trying to sell as many audio books as possible, but including one small story at the end may have increased interest in the Ghost Stories book.

M R James and Algernon Blackwood wrote the stories included in the Edwardian era. But the James one - Lost Hearts - might be set in the Victorian period, I'm not sure. I love the ghost stories of the early 20th Century, as well as the weird stories of the twenties to forties.
