I had the privilege of seeing and hearing Maestro Grappelli perform way back in another century at (then) Philharmonic Hall in Lincoln Center, NYC. It wasn't until then I learned that the violin wasn't his first instrument. Halfway though the concert SG put down his violin and sat at the piano. Believe me when I tell you that (as incredible as it may seem) he was just as great playing the piano as he was playing the violin. Music was in every fiber of that man's body.

This live video recording has better audio quality than any other I've found of Grappelli on KZfaq thus far.

I can't believe you say that - actually there is far too much echo causing this to become a thick soup...

@Gennettor-nc8kx There is a bit too much echo, but it sounds pretty clear otherwise. I wasn't thinking of the venue's acoustics so much as the quality of the recording itself (relatively closer to what a decent digital recorder might capture). The other videos I've found, aside from albums that are direct uploads or vinyl dubs of audio-only releases, were obviously recorded on subpar VCRs, from broadcasts, or the VHS tape has deteriorated.

@@FiddlingCPA I'm afraid I must disagree - this is simply awful sound.

I remember an episode of My Music (BBC), in which Chairman Steve Race referred to guitarist Martin Taylor, who toured regularly with Grappeli in the 1980s. MT had to be able to shift key on his guitar without foreknowledge or warning from the master Grappelli, just relying on his musical ear. In this video we see Grappelli almost smirking cheekily at Marc Fosset as he shifts keys in Fascinating Rhythm, starting @ 2:58.
