Stephen Hendry's Cue Tips

Stephen Hendry's Cue Tips

Жыл бұрын

Chris Hughes is back and he is in need of a Cue Tip!
Chris wants to know how he can improve his long potting game in order to start competing with his mate Judd Trump. Stephen takes Chris through some of the fundamentals of long potting and sets up a shot for Chris to try and nail. You can really see the improvement from Chris throughout the video through Stephen's coaching, so this would be a great watch for any club player who wants to improve their long game. Stephen also sets Chris a challenge of potting the blue and smashing the cue ball into the pink to split the pack. We count how many balls Chris gets loose and we'll compare this with our next guest in Cue Tips HQ. Let us know in the comments what you're love to see Stephen do a Cue Tip on and we'll look to do this in future videos!

No matter how many times Stephen was politely trying to tell Chris that he has a jerky cue action, Chris just kept doing the same thing. It just shows how hard it is to correct something like that, and probably shows how important it is to get the basics right as early as you possibly can, until it's literally impossible to change it.

For anyone wondering why Stephen hits it so easily, and Chris doesn't, look at the difference in their cue action. Stephen's cue goes a single speed and follows through the ball smoothly. Chris' cue action speeds up and it's jabby. He pulls the cue back almost as soon as he hits the white. While realistically it makes no difference on the cue ball (You've already hit it), it's just so much easier to lose control of where your cue tip is when you play that jabby motion, because it's almost as if you're afraid to strike the white too hard. I had that problem with my game forever, and it wasn't until I literally forced myself to get down to the practice table and practice my cue action that I got significantly better at playing the game.

Lovely lesson, Chris has to find that right cue delivery power which is a matter of time and practice honestly. The flaw however is his head moving right on the delivery, he doesn't stand up immediately or jerk up when he cues, but he does not keep his head still when he strikes. 2:41 he is perfectly still, smooth arm movement and then he moves up while his arm drives the cue. Fix that and you are golden!!

@@christopherrichardson5352 he has and with fewer tournaments to go at and shorter career than hendry not only that hendry changed the game he basically invented splitting reds off the blue and changed the game for the better even Ronnie does agree 👍 so in the words of a crown hendry has that still. Give hendry in his prime what tournaments there are now his major titles be off the charts. Yes I love Ronnie to but his arrogance and saying some players he'd have to lose a limb he'd still win is disrespectful. Low and behold the loses to a petrol station attendant in Welsh open final. Even Ronnie relys on fortune. Great front runner but if he goes 4 frames behind his head goes. Hendry didn't.
@christopherrichardson5352
@christopherrichardson5352 Жыл бұрын
@@tommy-showsyouhow5083 I'll put it this way Tommy. Hendry won his 7 world titles in one decade the 90's and then began to fizzle off afterwards. Ronnie has won his 7 world titles over 20 years in a career now spanning over 30 and I don't see him fizzling out anytime soon. Yes he can be moody and arrogant and all those not so loveable things, but in spite of it all when he's on his top game NOBODY can beat him and that would include Stephen Hendry in his prime. I believe he has at least one more world title in him and who knows maybe more. As far as the petrol station attendant goes. Let's just say even a genius like Ronnie can have a bad day. The Essex Exocet is the Greatest Of All Time without exception. Come on Ronnie make it 8 in Sheffield this year!!! Oh and I had to come back briefly to update this reply. So you know Tommy and all of the rest here I am NOT trying to disrespect Stephen Hendry in any way. He is in my opinion the second greatest to ever hold a snooker cue. However, Ronnie is unmatched again in my humble opinion. There was never anyone like him before and there certainly won't be another going forward.

@@KevinSmith-wp9qs I must disagree with you Kevin. There has never been a more attacking player than the Rocket. When he's focused and at the top of his game he can flatten anyone who is unfortunate enough to be in his path!!! That would include prime Stephen Hendry. Ronnie knows how to win and isn't shattered when he doesn't. Plus there has never been a player who can keep the cue ball on a string like Ronnie does.

I played for 20 years and learned how to hit every shot on a pool table , but the biggest thing I’ve learned was how to get on line , it’s nice to see hendry telling people to go look at the potting line ,and come back without taking your eyes off it , my buddy who is a great snooker player said to me one day “ you know why your missing that cut down the rail , your just guessing go look at it” then I went and looked at the potting angle came back without taking my eyes off it then it clicked, you can see your cue ball in your parifial vision and you stop when it lands on your hip (cue arm hip) walk straight in on that line drop straight down on that line , once your down then you can look at your cue ball , stroke through that line , once you do this for a while your not guessing and shooting at the ball your really hitting that line !! It sets up a hole pre shot routine helps with nerves , only works up to a certain angle then I use Steve Davis tip instead of gohst ball , once you have landed on your hip amagine too vertical lines from the aiming point and one the width of a ball aim for the centre in between the to lines now you have to move slightly to get your hip on the new line then walk in to your shot stepping right on the line get down then you can look at the cue ball, always maintain about three feet from the table to allow to step in on your line, and when walking back to the cue ball keep your body square to the aiming point , don’t turn you body so that you have to turn your head , lastly use the centre of your body as a starting point for reference always, for example if you have a dead straight shot stand centre body looking that ball straight in the hole chalk up here! Think about position , once you have that all figured out lock in on that aiming point then move to your hip looking at the cue ball with you parrifial vision ( should just be a little shuffle left or right depending on which arm you shoot with ) walk straight into that line with the same foot you shoot with get down all without taking you eye of that spot, then you can look at your cue ball , if your stoke is good and you can play well you should be able to close your eyes and pot it!! I’ve made many in a row looking my freinds in the eye! In takes a while to get good at this and make it look like a dance instead of a robot but it’s huge!!

Question: What is the last thing you look at before striking the cue ball? You say keep your eye on the potting angle, does this mean you never look at the cue ball? All the best Champ!
@Zombies8MyPizza
@Zombies8MyPizza Жыл бұрын
It's been pretty well known over the years that Stephen looks at the cue ball when striking. He confirmed this I believe in the episode with Neil Robertson. Other players who look at the cue ball when striking are Mark Allen and John Higgins. Whereas a lot of other top pros look at the object ball when striking. It's preference - if you're down on your shot, correctly aligned, correctly aimed, stance locked in, the only possible thing that can then stop you from potting that ball is not striking the cue ball where intended. So if looking at the cue ball upon striking helps that process for you, then do that; or if looking at the aim point on the object ball helps you cue straight towards it, then do that.

I am in no way qualified to comment, but I did notice the Chris lifted his head just before he struck the cue ball, whereas Stephen kept his head perfectly still. Is this similar to golf where you need to keep your head still whilst striking the ball?
