Come along with me on a Then and Now tour of the Colorado filming locations of Stephen King's 1997 Mini Series version of The Shining, including some of the rarer locations in the Denver area. The miniseries ran from April 27 - May 1, 1997 and only aired once on network television. It's no secret that Stephen King was not happy with Stanley Kubrick's version of The Shining, which deviated from his book. In the book, Jack Torrance was a good guy struggling with an addiction. In the movie, King felt Kubrick portrayed Jack as evil from the start, a character the audience could not feel compassion for. King produced the mini-series so he could tell his story, his way. As a result, this version of the story held true to the book Stephen had written, true to the images he had conceived in his mind when he created the story of Jack Torrance. As a result, its a very different telling of the story of the Torrances and the Overlook Hotel. Unfortunately, it only aired once, due to complaints from parents nationwide about its subject matter not being appropriate for prime time viewing, despite it's positive critical reception and acclaim. I'll also tell you the story of the mini-series, and share some behind-the-scenes fun-facts.
Locations include many areas of the Stanley Hotel, its rooms, its grounds, and other real life Denver, Colorado area locations:
The Stanley Hotel, 333 E Wonderview Avenue, Estes Park, Colorado
Torrance Family Apartment building - Poplar Apartments, 1410 Poplar St., Denver, Colorado
Dick Halloran's Florida Restaurant - Vine Street Pub & Brewery, 1700 Vine St., Denver, Colorado
Jack's Phone Booth Next to the Candlelight Tavern - Washington Park Veterinary Clinic, 383-393 S. Pearl Street, Denver, Colorado
Hope you enjoy!

This was great. I have Room 217 booked this summer. We (family) will be in Denver and Estes Park for over a week. I am a confirmed ghost story and horror film addict. And I learned a lot from your video. Didn't know so much was filmed in the Denver area. I like the mini series a lot. It has a certain charm to it. Might be able to check some of those places out if we have time while in Denver. Would have liked to see Gary Sinise as Jack. Did you film at the Stanley in the early morning? Didn't seem too busy. I'm going to try and get some good footage for a video. Glad you edited in the same order as the movie. Made it easy to follow.

Thank you so much! I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed it! Yes, I stayed overnight (but NOT in room #217!) so I filmed as much as I could either very late after everyone had gone to bed (around midnight) and was up at the crack of dawn filming again before everyone was up and around. Because yes, the Stanley Hotel is very busy during the day and even up until 10 pm when the last tour starts. People come from all around just to walk around and take the tours, even if they are not staying there. I have another video on my channel where I take you on a tour of the hotel itself and share some of it's stories, and in that one I was allowed inside room #217 to take a peek so you might enjoy that one as well! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eJd3acxelaitfYU.html I hope you have a wonderful trip!
