Fortunately we were able to grow up listening to music this good. Are we blessed? Or what!!

I was 16 and borrowed my mothers vw and with my sister and some of her friends drove downtown to the Spectrum in Philadelphia. I was loaned the car with the promise I would be home by midnight, living in Merion Station. Well Steppenwolf was supposed to start at 8pm but they didn’t start until 11 pm . Somehow my sister , me and her girlfriends were asked if we wanted to sit up on stage ? I sat basically right next to the organ . The show lasted a couple of hours . Best show I ever went to. Lost my glasses on the way back to the car but somehow managed to get us all home safely. Didn’t have use of the car for a month after that night but it was well worth it. The year I believe was 69. Jerry Edmonton was a truly great drummer. He might not have done the 12 minute solos but this band would not have been the same without his precise driving force.

i saw steppenwolf at "new york pop festival" at randall's island N.Y.C. 07/17/70. w/ John Sebastian, Grand Funk Railroad, Steppenwolf, and Jethro Tull. awesome band!!!

What a joy to see Steppenwolf live. Magnificent Canadian group. I think the first Hard Rock album I heard when I was 15, their album "The Second" is a true rock classic of all time with tremendous pieces like "faster than the speed of life", Don't Step on the grass Sam", 28 (magnificent piano on this one), the incredible "Magic Carpet Ride" and the last 4 pieces of this album since "Disappointment number". And to finish this great band Steppenwolf, "Born to be wild" I think is the first where they mention the term "Heavy Metal"

I saw them while they were on this tour, Salem, Oregon, May of 1969. Three Dog Night opened for them. One of the best. TDN put on a great show.

I was on a farm crew in Northern California. We were driving the PCH. Sraring at the Ocean rolling by. This song came on the radio, on coast to coast. Very surreal, we all felt it.

Saw John Kay in the 80s. New band, and they rocked the joint down! There were about 40 Hells Angels there. No trouble, but after they were done with their beer pitchers, they stomped them to bits. About 800 in that club.

Latched on to Magic Carpet Ride when watching an episode of Ken Burns' The Vietnam War. Scanned the end credits to find out who it was. That series is excellent, the waste, lies and fuck-ups. Unbelievable. Some things never change. I burst into tears during the final episode when they showed the memorial wall 🇬🇧

I wanted to see them and Iron Butterfly I Baltimore in 1967 I think. My dad would not drive 100 miles back and forth to take me, pick me back up from the Annapolis area. Would have been my 1st concert. Still love their music and John's mindset.

Very rare film clip . The band is a little sloppier than on the famous single , but John Kay is singing well . They also performed at Randall's Island with Hendrix and Leslie West's Mountain and many others . Amazing times , far too little of it filmed . Nice to see this , for sure .

This is classic live footage of Steppenwolf! Wow! When this monster hit just came out on the soundtrack for the Classic film Ea❤syrider! They were lean and mean back then. Good to see this as it’s so rare. ❤Killer tune! My favorite line is I never is I never want to die! I couldn’t agree more! But sadly it’s unavoidable as the body ages, it breaks down slowly and then it crashes like a car. Too bad one can’t just replace the worn out parts. Instead it expires and there nothing one can do. 😢😮

My family was heading to the gulf coast for the summer vacation. We headed down the street and my brother and yelled out "turn on the radio! And Born to Be Wild came on. Some very minor sense of justice for having to live in "tredneckville as a teenager. Later, in the trip same thing except Journey to the Center of the Mind. We are getting there: a year or two more thdn graduation!!!

This confirms it. When I was in a rock band in the 70's , when playing live with the Leslie Speakers, they could never compete with the Marshals or the. Fender amps as far as being heard.

Very odd sounds Kay was playing on his slide guitar during the instrumental part of "Magic Carpet Ride", it wasn't until the end of the song that he played what we are more familiar with. And I noticed those big congo drums next to Jerry, I wonder what songs he used them on, I would think "Rock me" but I don't know what else? And Jerry played his ride cymbal the whole time during "MCR", don't think he used his hi hats once. Thanks again, this is really great!!

Cool video. It's great to see the actual performance and not just hear the audio. Many bands from this period had audio recordings of their live shows but sadly did not have the video (or film) of the live performances preserved (or even made).

There are different slices of the 60s music scene, Steppenwolf and The Guess Who represents one of those slices. Strangely, this slice has gone MIA last 15 or so years from classic FM radio or KZfaq. Going to have to track down a few albums for the collection

Extraordinary

The RnR Hall of Fame maintains their criteria for induction rests with a band's "influence and significance of their contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll". If so, why then is Steppenwolf not yet inducted? Frankly, it seems to rest on the consensus of who's popular, which, depending on who's voting, and which other names are on the ballot, may very ignore the integrity of the vote and the criteria for which its supposed to be based on. Like most people I could drop a littany of names who's membership could easily be questioned - but music is a very personal thing and I would hate to offend anyone's musical preferences. I get it! To the average - AVERAGE - listener, Steppenwolf means all of two songs. But influence and integrity are those intangibles that simply aren't measured the same way "hit" songs are rated on the Hot 100. You simply can't talk about music of the 60s and ignore their presence, musicianship, political voice and yes, profound musical and pop culture influence. Time marches on and memories are fading for a lot of these older bands. If that's the case, we're likely to see more names from the 80s and 90s getting that plaque on the wall before Steppenwolf. It's not the end of the world if they never get there, but it would be nice to see it happen for them.

They changed the nature of Rock.

Back then my girlfriend thought the line in Born to be Wild "take the world in a love embrace" was "kick the world in a loving place"!
