Hello there, you’ve got such a great knowledge about production, mixing, mastering and acoustics which leads me to the following: you deserve a lot more subscribers on your channel. Any producer out there, no matter what genre, can learn from your video’s. Keep up the good work. Best, Emiel.

I saw this recommended and I thought it was about stereo image in mixing. I'm always very impressed by Wintersun their orchestral layers. I hear instruments all around me and it always look like the instruments are outside of my earbyds when I'm listening to it, I can identify the location of all of them, and after watching so many mixing video's, I'm yet to figure out...

Thimo Vijfschaft ...yeah , me too. I love music that has a real 3D sound stage, I haven’t found any videos that really explain that type of psychoacoustic mixing. They all talk about the Haas effect, different eq on left and right channels, mid side eq or slightly different pitch , stereo imagers etc. But none of them address techniques that really push sounds way out beyond the confines of your cans in all directions.....

I remember when I got my first set of monitor speakers. I fired them up and wondered at first if I had done something wrong, as the sound was clearly coming from my computer screen, and then I realized there's no way the sound I was hearing could be coming from those tiny built-in speakers.

Nice Vid! And i totally Agree. Especially about placement of the speakers! Its to me the most important as each room needs a totally different aproach with placement of speakers even you use the same ones!! It took me a very long time to find it in my home studio as its actually a horrible room. Still after a very long way i am very happy after all! I use the genelec 8030c and found a great place in my room but didnt expect to end the way i did. They do sound amazing on this place, any other place they actually sound bad. But i also use two Mirage m5-si at the same time and they are bipolar so radiate both directions and i got the right fase and timing of both systems and it sounds great to me and have a near flat response from 28hertz all the way up. I dampend the walls and ceiling, have two very nice bass traps which work the way i want. And two diffusors to make the room sound larger as it is and that also works very well. Like you said yourself, with those things your ears will be more pleased and get less tired with longer sessions. Best regards.

4:20 (sorry)) - It's the operational amp in the output section of the converter. AD8066 is optimal for mixing, best details, best stage and so on. Although you won't find it even in expensive converters. But. You can buy a DAC from one Russian company, for ridiculous amount of money - about $300, that beats e.g. Apogee Rosetta 200

In headphones what about the space simulations plugins, like 112 dB Red Line Monitor and Waves NX?, i found that both gives a better "coherence" in sound, although Waves claims his is a complete space simulation, it sounds ok, better than the rest, unfortunetely uses a lot of computer resources.

People have no idea how much proper placement makes a difference....especially tilting/ rake I have to say, you're missing a vital point. The right way to do placement is focusing on the bass first, then vocalists. The perception of the vocalists should also be at the right height, as he/ she is standing in front of you, NOT sitting down. That's where the magic starts happening....Great vids Wytse...keep it up.

Sorry, but: no. When I bought my first hi-fi stereo speakers, I tested two pairs of speakers against each other. One of them I was clearly able to locate with closed eyes, the other pair created a soundscape without gap in the middle, making me unable to locate the individual speakers - and those were the ones I bought. I am still using them today, and I am grateful for the fact that I do not need to install a "center" speaker in my home theater. A good stereo image is based on the set of stereo loudspeakers you use. Also: I don't quite see why people bother so much with acoustics. Just use a good set of studio headphones for mixing and test your mix on different kinds of loudspeakers, like in your car and on a laptop. If you feel adventurous, try a phone and earbuds. Why would you trust your mix to a bunch of more or less random room acoustics?

do you have any advice for someone who never has the opportunity to mix on monitors and can only use headphones for the entirety of the composition, sound design, mixing, and mastering process?

Mix it as good as you can, sounding how you like. Worry more about balance than loudness (-16lufs integrated is fine) and render it to listen on different speakers (stereo system, car, phone, etc). Take notes of issues you notice to work on for a next draft. Most importantly, do not master it yourself (that would completely defeat the purpose). Send it off to a mastering engineer (such as white sea studio for example) and the feedback they provide from a different perspective in different room with different (highly tuned) ears will be invaluable.

Switch to a speaker, any speaker, once in a while, just to check. Even laptop speakers or your phone will do. Just don't do everything on headphones with zero checking on anything else.

Hi, I mix esclusively in headphones and use morphit, from toneboosters for eq compensation (they have a huge list of manufacturers and headphone models, so probably you´ll find yours in there) and space simulation/ compensations??? plugins like 112 dB red line monitor and have used Waves Nx, both plugins, morphit and line monitor, sound kind of strange at the beggining but I get used to it, and can work pretty well specially with bass frecuencies balance, avoiding overcompensating, both my mixing teachers in collegue and clients haven´t complaint about the overall mix balance and I founded that by using them I can mix longer with less ear fatigue issues, so I keep using them both, even just the Morphit plugin is quite helpful by itself, hope it helps.

Hello there just wanted to highly suggest getting speakers and mixing and mastering on low volume level Just from personal experience I spent YEARS trying to mix primarily on headphones and had found many of my mixes to come out thin, lacking/ or too much bass, levels all over the place, I just truly believe some good 100$ mixing speakers from amazon can truly make a really large difference in my mixing it’s honestly insane to me It took awhile for me to understand why but I’ve realized a good mix first starts on quiet mixing speakers and then the way it’s interpreted in other speakers such as iPhones headphones and all that will pretty much sound good Of course there’s special circumstances in anything but I highly suggest speakers 👍🏼 I feel this also applies to sound design
