Why is it that the bottom of the smaller tubes has a black coating on them? I'm not sure what that is. And, also, could you explain the hand grip thingy you have? It looks nice.
@Matonizz
@Matonizz 7 жыл бұрын
The black tubes is only a black lacquer. Normally it's supposed to be gold plating but I though black would look pretty cool so they made that for me, no other particular reason for that. As for the strap, it helps me to hold euphonium upright a little longer before my left forearm and shoulder gets tired, since there is a little bit more weight distributed on that hand. Hope that answers the question my friend!
@sonic5d
@sonic5d 7 жыл бұрын
Matonizz I actually like that idea of black lacquer, and you did answer my questions well^^ I play the tuba and I know where I pull my tubes out, I'm usually touching the same area where the black lacquer is...so it could help visually prevent the smudging, finger prints, and/or corrosion vs having it all just gold lacquer. I will look into that! Thanks a lot!

Have you tried the Willson euphonium from Switzerland? I used one in the Joliet American legion band before I retired several years ago.before I stopped playing and I was very impressed with it. It had a very rich, powerful, and smooth sound. I used a Shilke 60 mouthpiece since I was primarily a BBflat tuba player who switched to euphonium when we needed one.

For anyone interested, I tested some Adams E3 with heavy valve caps before Christmas at the factory in Holland. While testing I also had a Sterling Virtuoso and my own Besson Prestige... Results! Adams for me... With the addition of the heavy caps the difference was pretty huge, every note was full and warm, and there was essentially no need for a trigger (even though I would have one anyway for ensemble purposes). They will also build you an instrument to your specs (hand position, lead pipe position, the sound you want to create) which no other company will do to my knowledge. Currently, I play on a Besson so I am not endorsing Adams, and I am going to play some Sterlings tomorrow, so no favoritism for sales purposes! Have a go, it may surprise you!
@Matonizz
@Matonizz 7 жыл бұрын
Interesting! Thanks for sharing your experience Gary! I haven't tried the new E3 so I'm pretty curious to see what adjustments they have made if I have an opportunity to test one. One of the guys at River City I play with is an artist with Adams E3 so I had the chance to test it quite a bit. It had an amazing response time and was really good with piano but I had some issues in a brass band set up though. It wouldn't project all that well when you REALLY needed to bump it up in volume and as soon as I switched to either Sterling or Besson it would not be an issue. However, it is a really good instrument, just a little bit too light for large ensembles in my opinion, at least the older model. Have you ever had a chance to use it in a brass band yourself? That would be interesting to hear from you. Are you planning to come to any ITEA conferences this year by any chance? It would be cool to do a collab video if that's something that would interest you. I'm pretty sure people would like to hear your opinion on various stuff. Thanks a lot for the feedback, people will find it really useful!
@curting2000
@curting2000 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, it was a little sensitive to brightness for sure when I gave it a lot of power, but then the heavy valve caps were added it became a very different animal, it could take just as much if not more than the Besson and the Sterling. Everything is customisable, they can add and subtract weight to many different parts of the instrument to help with different tone colours and to suit each different player. Very clever stuff!
@Matonizz
@Matonizz 7 жыл бұрын
Sounds pretty cool! If they are in any of the upcoming ITEA events I'll try to check it out and see what's up. Just out of curiosity, do you have any preference when it comes to Virtuoso vs Prestige? I find them pretty damn similar. If you're planning to stick with E3 it would be really cool to see what you have to say after good few month of playing it.

Again, great euphoniums. They make lighter euphs so the instruments have different strengths in comparison to heavier euphoniums. Amazing response time, very accurate, very centered, very sensitive, however, not suitable to play in big orchestras or bands in my opinion. Very limited with projection and volume before sound gets distorted our out of tune. Similar to Jupiter XO. If you are purely focused on solo playing with piano or jazz adams is the way to go in my opinion. I played in a band with the guy who played with Adams and it worked poorly though. Just like any other euph, has it's strengths as well as weakness. If a get a hold of one might make a video.

I have a Yamaha YEP842S. I have owned it since the early 2000’s. At least since they first came out with it. It is a fantastic horn. It plays beautifully with the right mouthpiece. Recently Yamaha has come out with the YEP842TS which does have a trigger. I haven’t had the chance to play one yet. I assume it is identical to my horn except for the addition of the trigger. Perhaps one day, you’ll have the opportunity to demo one and give your review. I have been tempted to buy one as well, but I did want to wait until I could play it. How important is a trigger and will it give me any kind of serious advantage in playing? Having never played with a trigger, I might not miss it.....But playing with one might switch a light bulb on in my mind to all the possibilities. Regardless, I did like the left hand strap on the Sterling Euphonium. I wish I had one on mine.

Hopefully you'll still see this, I now play on a Besson 700 instrument which I got when I was 11. It was a great instrument back then because it plays lighter and tunes okay for a beginner. Now I'm 20 years old and I kind of feel like I've outgrown my instrument. It's not compenstated and whenever I play low notes with my 4th valve it doesn't tune right. I've lately been working on Harlequin by Sparke but the instrument is not helping me at all. I'd like to buy a heavier euphonium that's conpensated and I've been looking at a besson prestige, since I have a thing for besson (I've played on besson instruments for about 13 years now) but I'm willing to look for other options! So you have any advise to give me?

Thanks for support buddy! I haven't in like probably 10years or so :D so I don't think I qualify to give my opinion apart from what I've heard from other players. Vast majority claim that it is a very good instrument, brighter sound than Sterling or Besson and that it works well in military bands where you have to play in wind/reed based environment. It is a middle ground euph in terms of weight and thickness so if that's what you are looking, Wilson is probably the choice. I haven't heard anyone ever complain that it is crap, even Steve Mead who is like a Besson dictator (just kidding) :D If I ever get a chance to do some more playing on it I will make sure to review it ;) Thanks for watching my friend!

I do wish I would have tried a few euphoniums before buying one but no stores near me have euphoniums on show. If you plan to do most of your playing as a soloist I wouldn't mind either Adams or Yamaha, however they do not work well in big ensembles in my opinion. They play extremely easy but as soon as you need to pump some serious air through, that's when you realize the difference in terms of sound potential. Euphs like Besson and Sterling can be hard to play but if you have a skillset, I believe you can get a bit more out of them. One thing I can tell you, either one you buy, you will not be disappointed.

First blind example: #1 was out of tune and thin sounding. #2 was fat and in tune. # 3 was fat, but had pitch problems. SECOND BLIND: #1, #2, and #3 all sounded good, but #3 had some pitch problems. My pick was the XO every time. I have heard some folks talk about the projection issue on all XO instruments, but I found they are more live sounding to you when you play, and your ear can be fooled. I have no issues playing at any volume with XO instruments. I felt the Stirling was the least of all in all categories.

Its a 4th valve....Please don't call it a "trigger." its not a French horn. It insults me to hear it called a "trigger." I have 20 years on euphonium and I've never heard the word trigger and euphoniums together. just stop please. if this is some new thing lets just stop it now, ok? 4 valves....not three valves and a trigger. I'm sorry to be... however you may take this...but a euphonium has no "trigger." Just lets not do that...ok? We're better than that.

LOL, he's talking about the trigger that adjusts the main tuning slide, not the 4th valve. It's a common accessory for the more pro-line euphoniums for helping with intonation.
