Rewatching Roy's early fights is just as eye opening as seeing them the first time. It's easy to forget after watching him fight at heavy, just how freakishly quick and powerful he was.

pretty sure rjj is the greatest athlete boxing ever had. Overall to my eyes he is, and I've been carefully watching all the best in all generations for quite a while. RJJ shows different weapons in different fights, sometimes using a quick up jab, but more commonly using the same weapons floyd mayweather would adopt. long quick lead rights and leaping left hooks. fast and covering so much range that fighting long and big guys was fine. But as good as floyd was, rjj was even better. A tad quicker prime for prime i think, a tad, and more power, could throw powerful unique punches from any angle. Crazy endurance too, crazy fast reflexes. could fight just as good moving forwards or backwards, had an amazing check hook while moving backwards. he was so... so dominant in his run. and the truth is floyd lost one fight -- the judges gave it to him, and he dominated the rematch, but floyd absolutely lost that fight, and all the commentators and harold letterman had is for that guy over floyd. it was a certain robbery. floyd was never quite as dominant as roy. roy was untouchable for a long time. all fights completely one sided, utterly and absolutely one sided more or less -- until he got to his 51st fight and finally lost. floyd went 50 and 0 -- so did rjj - although technically there was a DQ and he smashed him in the rematch. so rjj's record is also nuts, and after that first loss he was probably never quite the same -- but he's still fighting today prime for prime -- no one was as dominant as rjj for as long as rjj -- i can think of absolutely no one. just so very very dominant. and lastly, a natural star, pizzazz, showmanship, charisma, likability, even when showboating and being obnoxious, he was still somehow likable. ultimately what was it? speed. the greatest speed i've ever seen in professional boxing with my eyes overall. combat is attributes at the end of the day. only so many ways to punch, so ultimate who's faster, and the fastest is most likely to do the best. and so it is. rjj loved to drop his hands, and almost never paid for it, and was fast enough to get them back up in a shell when the range suddenly changed.

The guy hes fighting, Malinga, lost debatable close decisions to Chris Eubank & Nigel Benn, then he beat Benn in a rematch. Roy Jones was so far ahead of the competition he was damn near outa sight, the man was SUPERSONIC. Next Level only begins to describe him, you would need to have witnessed him in his era to grasp what Im saying, he was unreal.

If you watch enough classic fighters the one thing you notice is Larry Merchant bitching about them. Had a first row seat to see some of the all time greats - Jones, Hagler, Hopkins and he spent half the time complaining and NOT appreciating greatness. If your name wasn’t Ray Leonard or Oscar De La Hoya he just didn’t appreciate you. Compare that to Harold Lederman who clearly appreciates what he was witnessing all along

In my opinion, i don't think that Larry didn't appreciate them, i think he was just tired of watching people act foolish in the ring. He was a big fan of Oscar and Leonard because they hardly ever clowned around and danced in the ring, they definitely had a level of class among them. Mike Tyson was a boxer Larry liked until he began fooling around with Don King, then Larry's opinion about Tyson as a person changed.

The best feet in the history of boxing ? I cant think of anyone with better footwork than Roy Jones. Ali had great feet, Ray Leonard had great feet, Ray Robinson had great feet but I dont think any of them had better feet than Roy Jones. Hes probing, creating openings n generating power with them with almost every twitch. Hes always in position to counter, hes rarely if ever defensive even when hes moving backwards. Idiots try to say he was only reflexive, athletic n powerful. Roy Jones was a master tactician, hes an an absolute black belt. Hes poetry in motion.

@@michaels8386 Manny has good feet too, just not Roy Jones level, but if you see something in Mannys footwork that you can take n use for yerself or teach to a kid then go ahead, Manny has good feet but not great, his feet got him KOd, face planted vs Marquez, same as Amir Khans feet got him TKOd vs Danny Garcia. I dont even think Roy realised or realises how good his feet were. I describe Roys feet as basketball player feet. No basketball player hs feet like Roy Jones but because Roy played basketball during his boxing career I think it added an extra dimension to his footwork, which knowing Roy, is probably WHY he played basket ball during his boxing career. He was n maybe still 24/7 a boxer. & 24/7 boxing. Roy was no accident, he was dedication hard work, intelligence & commitment.

Malinga was a slick boxer who had a victory over Nigel Benn. He was no pushover but yet could hardly land a punch on Jones. This fight shows you just how good Jones was. He would have beaten Chris Eubank, Benn, Julian Jackson and Gerald McLennan had they been willing to sign to fight him. It's a pity he boxed for so long and ended up with a stack of losses. If he had retired after his victory over John Ruiz in 2003, Jones would have gone down as one of the greatest boxers of all time. Instead, he boxed for way too long and ended up with an average looking record as a result. Sad!

I always wondered how Merchant kept that job for so long. Was he friends with a top guy at HBO? Negative, biased, and elitist in his commentary, post fight interviews where he thinks the show is about him.

Agreed. This was the 2nd fight I heard him say "I saw sugar ray Leanord and he's no sugar ray". Bernard Hopkins was the other. He probably said it every fight until he realized Roy was an all time great

Roy was my favorite boxer. I think when he first fought in heavy weight against ruiz i think he could have beat any heavy weight. His speed was crazy and could hit hard. Way too fast for most heavy weights.

Lol, I'm laughing at the commentator that doesn't like that Roy Jones's Jones's Jr is show boating. I say if you can back up your show boating, then please,, show boat baby. Screw the critics. 👍

it wasn't posturing if you know his background he didn't learn fighting in your local city gym. He was forged in a serious slolom of hazing and relentless discipline. Some would call it abuse, but you see the product. In his prime nobody in his weight class was able to fight him and win decisively or indecisively lol.
