Found this burried in some old music files and thought it was fantastic. Steve Barton as The Phantom and Rebecca Luker as Christine!

Holy shit Barton is incredible. Everyone fawns over Ramin now, and he's great. JOJ is amazing too. But Barton's voice here is so powerful, while fragile at the same time. It feels more real and representative of the phantom's insecurities and heartache. So beautiful.

If there's one thing I've noticed: all of the baritone Phantoms have powerful voices

Me: **Is so used to the Original London Cast that it hasn't ever occurred to me to look up Steve Barton as The Phantom** Me: **Finally looks him up** Me: 🤯💗 Dang! He makes an amazing Phantom! All these years of being a fan (or phan as we used to spell it), and I've been missing out on this! How could I never have thought to look it up before?! I seriously love his voice as The Phantom! 💗

My God in Heaven! Steve sounds amazing as the Phantom!!! Apart from the personal loss his relatives certainly had to face, his early death turns out to be even more tragic on grounds of the fact that generations of musical fans are no longer able to experience this artist's phenomenal talent live. - Personally, I regret that I could never see him playing the Phantom!

Rebecca still remains my favorite Christine. Not many ppl can match the purity of her voice. It was crystal clear and always pitch perfect. I saw her in all her Broadway roles and she always blew me away. RIP a massive talent! ❤️

I love steve barton, especially in Tanz der Vampire, Die Unstillbare Gier is probably the saddest & most emotional song I've ever heard!

Totally! And his voice is so amazing. So sad he dies so young. Would give a lot to hear him sing Die Unstillbare Gier live.

I love Total Finsternis. Now, the Broadway version was disappointing, even though Mandy Gonzalez is a good singer. But, Barton and Cornelia Zenz were better in Tanz

I loved Steve as Count von Kroloch. My brother saw Tanz der Vampire in Vienna and bought me the cast album. Hearing him sing Gott is Tot still gives me chills. Shame the New York version became a catastrophic mess with so many egos. They should've stuck to the Vienna formula. I know Michael Crawford meant well when did the show for Steve.

It still amazes me, that I first (ever) heared Steve Barton in Tanz der Vampire and he became my favourite lead overall in this musical than I found out he played Raoul in original cast of POTO, that shocked me 😅 and I was totally speechless when I discovered that he also played Phantom himself ♡. He was amazing singer and I fell in love with his voice. Unstillbare Gier is very heart moving I agree and I also like very much Gott is tot and Einladung zum ball + Tanzsall because his voice has everything softness, dominance, power and in these songs his baritone voice can do magic 😍!

Steve Barton is such an amazing singer. I love him as Raoul best though. I think his voice suits it best but he still sounds fantastic as the Phantom. Such a wonderful voice.

This is Phantastic. Love Steve's voice. Sadly his Career & life ended way too soon. I knew he passed. How he died Shocked me!! Did not know he committed suicide. Sad!!😢
@shawnjesseman6646 жыл бұрын
Nate Krieger there has actually never been proof of that. Just too much "evidence" that pointed in that direction. I'm friends with his son Edward and he said that Steve actually died of a heart attack.
@shawnjesseman6646 жыл бұрын
The biggest reason that many people believe that Steve committed suicide was simply because, when he was found, there was an empty bottle of blood pressure medication on his nightstand. According to his son, Steve suffered from heart disease. He actually had his first heart attack at the age of 25. Then, after over 15 surgeries on his knee, and two surgeries on his back, he was left addicted to pain medication. Not too long before he passed away he had one final surgery on his knee. He was terrified that he was going to get a staph infection and have to have that leg amputated. But, according to his son, the actual cause of death was a heart attack in his sleep.
These two are just amazing! And this audio is so clear, it never fails to surprise me whenever I listen to Steve's and Rebecca's performance!

Thank you for sharing this. I had the good fortune to see/hear Steve Barton play the Phantom and it was so thrilling. His performance of Raul is perfection, as well. All I Ask of You, which he sang with Sarah Brightman, is one of the GREAT recordings of all time. He was so gifted and GIVING and I'm sorry he died so young. Thank you for sharing this with all who miss him and all who will discover him through videos like this.

Next to Michael Crawford, he is an outstanding Phantom. That role, if it could be possible, I would want to play it in my high school drama department. Idk if I could hit those notes. I am a baritone and my range goes from E2 to G4 and Phantom is a tenor and you know haha. I just love that role so much.
@whjk11b808 жыл бұрын
There were many baritones who played the Phantom. Steve is one of them! Apart from him I can recall e.g. Norm Lewis or James Barbour. If you can sing the part, I think there's no problem with your voice type :)
@noahgipson86418 жыл бұрын
True. It's probably because they all had the training to hit those notes. Goals to hit notes like that.
@whjk11b808 жыл бұрын
+Noah Gipson Yeah, training is one thing, but it also depends on one's range. Some baritones, like Barton, have really good high notes. Same with female voices - not all actresses playing Christine can hit that high E in the title song, but I also recall one contralto who could sing the high C. :)

I saw Lisa Vroman live in the San Francisco production. As much as I loved Sarah Brightman away from ALW's stuff, I gotta agree with you. I don't know why but Brightman's top note makes my ears...ring at least as Christine. Her solo career stuff I have no problems.
