This scene really hit because of another scene in this movie that shows him zoning out during his younger kids' school play while the kids look at him from the stage for approval. The dad is unable to shake the thought of his addict son. The love for his younger kids is blocked because of the hurt between him and the older son, and this lullaby scene shows the damage and emptiness that the dad felt later on at the younger kids' play.

My father had a difficult childhood. Or atleast that's how I've tried to explain to myself that he actually isn't a bad person. But there's still a little kid inside me who wishes my dad said good night back to me, singing me to sleep is a whole different chapter Edit: as me and my siblings are growing older, I've realized so are my parents and that just like us, this is also their first time going through all these stages of parenthood. I've realized that being harsh to someone who has been in pain and doesn't know how to navigate life with it isn't the kindest thing to do and that too is a realization that occured to me only because despite every hardship, my parents have raised good kids. This is just a little reminder that at the end of the day, our parents are also humans and they get hurt just like us, so be kind to them along your journey of self healing so that they can heal too. ❤️

Steve Carell gives me so much comfort. When I was younger I would listen to my dad and step-mom yell bloody murder at each other for hours then I would have to listen to them have sex. But one year for Christmas my real mom bought me a bunch of movies from the dollar store, two of them being despicable me and almighty adam. I would watch them both for hours on end just to drowned out the sound of them. Thank you Steve, I love you more than my dad will ever love me

I’m a 43 year old single mom/grandmother. My father sucked. He was always at work and he cheated on my mom with a lady he worked with that I was really close to. Even worse my sons’ father sucked even more, way more. He was emotionally, verbally, mentally abusive to us and in some other ways as well on occasion. He fought for custody just to be cruel and made our lives hell until I finally got full custody years later. It breaks my heart that I was not able to give my boys the dad that they needed and deserved. My children mean everything to me and they are my whole world, I would have loved for them to have been able to have had a loving, caring, nurturing father instead of the monster that they had. What does bring me immense joy though is watching my oldest son and his 2 year old daughter. Now HE is the kind of daddy that everyone would love to have. My son adores his little girl so much. She has been his sunshine since the moment she was born. He is totally hands on, very involved and loving, nurturing and you can literally see him beaming with the love he has for her. It is a beautiful thing to see and I’m so proud of him for being the dad that he never had.

My dad died when I was younger. The only thing I remember about him is his death. In middle school, I never thought too hard about it. I lived with my mom and brothers alright just fine. Now that I’m older, it hurts so bad to think of all that could’ve been. I never played ball with my dad, he never taught me to tie a tie, we never watched our favorite football team together, he wasn’t there when I got my first car, he wasn’t there for my first drink, hell, he wasn’t even able to be there for my 7th birthday. I miss him so much sometimes. I thought as time went by, things are supposed to better.

My dad’s father was an asshole. He left when he was 10 and my grandma was pregnant with another child. He screamed at him constantly for no reason and never acted as a father, just another person living in the same house. When my aunt was born, my dad was the one taking care of her, cooking for her and helping her with her homework when his mom wasn’t home because she had to work. My dad has been nothing but nice to me. He made up for his dad shit behaviour, and seeing so many fathers falling in a toxic behaviour towards their children because their own childhood was ruined makes me think I’m really lucky to have someone who didn’t make me have the same trauma he experienced. I love you dad. Sometimes we fight and I think you’re too full of yourself to accept that I can be right, but I’m sure sometimes you think the same of me. Love you
