All I can say is that in 50 years of watching hockey I have never seen a play like that called onside before. Kudos for Edmonton for making a game of it. This game had so many 'intangibles' --'on side' 'delay of game penalty' four different goalies, last second toe save--it could have gone either way. Game two should be interesting.

I’ve been arguing with ppl over that Makar goal for an entire day now, and I’m still convinced they made the right call. Both possession and control are completely irrelevant to (non-delayed) offsides. Offsides is entirely dictated by the position of the puck and the position of the players skates. Most importantly, though, offsides is ALWAYS called when the player touches the puck. By defining offsides as “a player controlling/possessing the puck while entering the zone”, it means that if I were skating to the blue line and pushed the puck over the blue line while my teammate was in the zone, that play should be blown dead. And it’s not. Ever. It’s ONLY blown dead after my teammate touches the puck. This is why delayed offsides exists, because otherwise offsides would be called the moment the puck enters the zone, every single time. Now, regarding the rules about delayed offsides, the NHL rulebook says that the play should be blown dead as soon as a player makes an attempt to gain possession of the puck. However, “possession” in the NHL is defined as “the last player to touch the puck”, so Makar HAD possession before entering the zone. Since he had possession, he couldn’t have been “attempting to gain possession”; and since “possession” is irrelevant to the primary offsides rule, the determine factor in the entire situation is whether or not he was touching the puck. Makar wasn’t touching the puck. He had possession, hell you can even say he had control, but that’s totally irrelevant to both the rules and the reason why the whistle gets blown. Touching the puck is what causes the whistle to be blown. He didn’t touch the puck, so the play should not have been blown dead. It was the right call
@ThugNASA
@ThugNASA 2 жыл бұрын
Not true, possession is relevant since the rule states that, during a delayed off-side, no attacking player can "attempt to gain possession of a loose puck." But even Oilers fans seem to be in agreement that Makar had possession of the puck. Therefore, he cannot be attempting to gain possession if he already has it. They're literally making the case for it to be a good goal by using that as their argument.
@hockeylvr42
@hockeylvr42 2 жыл бұрын
@@ThugNASA I definitely touched on that in my reply, but you’re not wrong. It’s entirely possible for a player to “have possession” of the puck, and not be touching the puck. Makar “had possession”, so the crux in this particular instance is whether or not he was touching the puck, NOT possession. However, I will say that the NHL rule book does NOT expressly define when an offsides play should be blown dead. It simply says the puck should be the first thing in the zone, and offsides is purely dictated by the location of the players skates. The NHL needs to amend the offsides rule to include “the play shall be blown dead as soon as an attacking player touches the puck in the offensive zone, and the play is offsides”, because if they do there is NO debating whether it was offsides and there’s NO debating when the whistle should be blown. Basically, the debate is the NHL’s fault, because it’s up to personal interpretation of the rules. That shouldn’t be the case, and they should absolutely change the rule to make it clearer and avoid another situation such as this.
@ThugNASA
@ThugNASA 2 жыл бұрын
@@hockeylvr42 I agree, but had he not had possession, one could argue that by pursuing the puck that he was "attempting to gain possession" which would make it offside. I think a lot of people are also forgetting that when Nichuskin tagged up, Makar had not officially entered the zone. Also, it doesn't show it in this video, but on the broadcast it showed the blue line camera from the bench side and the puck was indeed NOT touching Makar's stick. So, all attacking players were clear of the attacking zone before the puck was touched. I just find it funny that the main argument against the goal, that I've seen, has been "he didn't touch it, but he had possession"

@stevehuth7669
@stevehuth7669 2 жыл бұрын
Best explanation I've heard about Makar's goal: We are very familiar with dump-ins while someone tags up, which are perfectly fine and normal. In this case Makar didn't fire it into the corner, he poked it over the line and lifted his stick so he was not in contact with the puck. Meanwhile Nicushkin tags up and (very importantly) Makar's feet are still outside the zone. It's a good goal. Had it been fired into the corner everyone would have recognized the legal tag up. Because it was just poked over the line it caused mass confusion-but the rule doesn't care how far the puck goes into the zone, just that the offside player tags up BEFORE an offensive player touches the puck or crosses the line, which is exactly what happened.

It's not a stupid rule, or a glitch. It's a delayed offside. Possession of the puck doesn't matter as long as Makar doesn't touch the puck in the zone before his teammate clears the zone. It was the right call. Happened to the Avs a couple of seasons ago. They challenged it and lost. I remember being upset but realized it was the right call then also.

@@marshallmykietyshyn4973 the rule you just quoted literally says it was the right call lol 1. Did a member of the opposing team touch the puck? Makar was in possession of the puck (but again... did not touch it). 3. Did a member of the opposing team force the defending puck carrier further back into his own zone? Not applicable since there was no defending puck carrier. 4. Was a member of the opposing team about to make physical contact with the defending puck carrier? No. See point 3. The rule literally states it's only offside if the player who is in possession of the puck TOUCHES the puck during the course of a delayed offside. Makar was on side throughout the play and only touched it once all players had tagged up. Every time a play like this has gone to video review they've determined this play to be onside.

That call on the Makar goal was right, I get the point that the puck was over the line and Nichuskin hadn’t tagged up yet but Makar wasn’t touching the puck and didn’t have control over it, it’s one of those things you find weird, hear the explanation, still find it weird but at least the explanation is perfectly logical
@curtisb5978

Apply that logic to a player poking the puck the whole way down the ice and not being allowed to be hit because he never has possession or control, or a guy being hauled down on a break away but it's not a penalty shot because the puck wasn't touching his stick at the exact moment he was hauled down. The rule states when a player has or is attempting to gain possession on a delayed offside it shall be blown down and to say that Makar doesn't have or is at the very least attempting to gain possession here is ridiculous, would you say Mcdavid gains and losses possession 50 times when he stick handles end to end?

@@curtisb5978 Possession has no impact on calling Holding, hooking, etc., so the PS can still happen in a scoring chance is taken away. Interference has a built in "timer" from last touch that would allow those hits on a player nudging a puck ahead of himself. according to the NHL’s ruling on the goal, pushing the puck forward did not constitute an attempt at gaining possession, and he does not actually cross the blue line and take control of the puck in the offensive zone until Nichushkin has tagged up and come back onside. Once Nichushkin was deemed to have properly exited the zone, Makar gained sufficient control of the puck for it to be considered possession, making his zone entry and ensuing goal onside. “It was determined that Colorado’s Valeri Nichushkin legally tagged up at the blue line before Cale Makar entered the offensive zone with the puck on his stick. Makar made contact with the puck in the offensive zone after Nichuskin was in an on-side position,” read an official explanation from the NHL.

It's not going to be a common play like Steve says because there's another element that has to be satisfied, both players skates have to be on the blue line or in the neutral zone at the same time. This is no different than a dump and chase where the player dumps it in. He still has to wait until the other player clears the zone before he can release from the blue line or it's offsides. Similar plays happen in beer league all the time, player pushes the puck over the line and waits until the other player gets to the blue line. Makar has possession of the puck throughout the play, it's not a loose puck, so the one that's being looked at is did he touch it while a player was still offside. He pushes the puck across the line while Nichushkin is still in the zone, but he does not touch the puck afterward so it becomes a delayed offside. Makar stays onside himself and doesn't not touch the puck again until Nichushkin had tagged up. This is an onside play. It was close by inches but they got it right according to the rules. And furthermore there are several previous examples of this exact scenario where they also made the same call.

As defined, "possession" and "control" do not require actual or continual "contact" with the puck, and neither are a consideration on this play; "contact" with the puck is the only determining factor and whether or not Makar had possession or control is irrelevant. Had Makar flipped the puck higher into the zone as a dump-in and the same transition of Nichushkin tagging up before Makar entered the zone and then collected it around say the top of the circles, no one would be questioning this play. Because the flip-in happens inches from his stick and almost instantaneous with the puck crossing the determining edge and the Tag-up, people are forgetting how the Delayed Offside rule works. Kudos to the lineman for making the correct call. Also, love you Steve, but this happens every single time the puck gets dumped into the zone and as far as " you're going to see this all the time now"... we already do. Players already wait when they see a teammate offside while the puck is at or near them on the blue line and then play it when the tag up happens. So, when you get your certification to referee they will cover a number situations in your class. This offside/onside interpretation was one covered in my first class. The rule has not changed. This is onside. And we do see this type of play often. Push and chase is common. Makar is in possession and control of the puck in the neutral zone. Nichushkin is offside Last contact was made on the Blue line before the puck proceeds into the Oilers' defensive zone. Nichushkin (if Makar continues to contact the puck after the puck has completely crossed Blue Line then it would be Offside) Makar does not lose possession of the puck. (Control is lost for purposes of rules that deal with players in control of the puck) Makar is no longer in contact with the puck. Nichushkin is offside. Delayed offside rules apply. (if Makar contacts the puck before all attacking (Colorado) players leave the offensive zone, then it is offside) Makar can not be seeking to obtain possession as he has not lost possession. Nichushkin tags up. Makar has yet to enter the offensive zone. Makar's next contact is completely onside. I'm sure the reason they called for the review was because from the blue line cam angle it looks like the puck is still one Makar's stick as the puck crosses the blue line. They have very little time to call for review and that pressure didn't allow for review of multiple angles before using the challenge. If you slow this play down it's a much easier call. Because it happens at speed, the steps become difficult to follow. This is no different than Me knocking the puck barely over the line with no defensive players around me, but I have to wait for one of my teammates to clear before I can touch the puck again. The fact that the play happened at 25-30mph, the margins were inches and fractions of a second, and the refs got it right. Steve, that's a hat pick.

So the explanation they gave for Makar's goal was that he pushes the puck over the blue line while he's still in the neutral zone. He was not touching the puck while Nichushkin was in the zone. Once Nichushkin's skates come out of the zone, then Makar touches the puck again. Making it an onside play. I'll probably get some weird Oilers fans arguing with me about how the entire league is biased against the Oilers (weird and untrue and also maybe your goalies shouldn't let in 8 goals regardless...but whatever), but that is just their reasoning behind it. I thought it was offside as well but seeing the overhead angle it's more understandable how they came to that conclusion. The side angles were really close and hard to distinguish. Again, I'm just giving their explanation for it. If you agree or not, that's not my problem.

This is not complicated at all. If you watched all of the replays, as I said in another comment, you can clearly see that Makar pushes the puck into the offensive zone while he's still behind the line, and he does not touch the puck after it enters the zone until after Nichushkin gets back onside. You ask "since when did that ever matter?" on having to touch the puck offside, and the answer is since always. You know how you see guys barreling toward the offensive zone, but they have a teammate who's offsides, so they just dump it in and chase? It happens all the time in every single game. This just happened to be more of an inadvertent play by Makar, where I don't think he even saw where Nichushkin was, but it just worked out that he pushed the puck in, instead of carrying it in on his stick, which would have resulted in an offside call.

If u dont think it should be a goal then your basically arguing to get rid of the tag up rule as a controlled dump in would be the same thing. These anouncers keep using possession but possession only matters when its ur legs crossing the blue line before a puck u have possession with is still onside. Happens sometimes when players spin into the offensive zone n possession is touching the puck n tag up touching is the wording n the only thing that matters as the puck leaves makars stick right as it crosses the blue line n doesnt touch it over the blue line until after his teammate tags up. Its a good goal n if u still dont think so then u create your own league without the tag up rule n enjoy 4 hour hockey games half being with the game clock stopped.

Oilers fan here, but I honestly don't care. It's a crappy rule. The off-side player had ZERO impact on the play. The goal was scored 100% fair-and-square. To try to weasel out of it on a pure technicality is weak, IMO. I think the rule should have some degree of a judgement to it, determining if the off-side infraction had an affect on the play. I've seen goals disallowed because a player that was in the process of stepping into the players' bench still had a skate on the ice in the offensive zone. Obviously that player did not give his team an "unfair advantage" by entering the zone ahead of the puck, so it makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to disallow a goal on that basis. JMHO.

@geuros 2 жыл бұрын
@@jplant1414 that's fair from you. I'm not an Oilers fan but I still think rules like this should be strict. There should be now room for judgement because then it's opinions vs facts which makes the game less fair in the end. The situation with the skate on the ice is a bit different from this - player that is offside going out of the zone is still a sub-conscious threat for the defender, or a distraction, whatever but even though he doesn't play it's different from the situation had he never been there. There was another moment in this game - Burakovsky got hit by a puck, probably badly but the play continued and Oilers scored a goal. This is something I don't understand because had it been a really bad hit, like in the throat frontally, it could potentially be a battle of seconds for his life. A player is on-side when either of his skates are in contact with the blue line, or on his own side of the line, at the instant the puck completely crosses the leading edge of the blue line. Was Makar offside? No Was Nichuskin offside? Yes, therefore delayed off-side. 83.3 If, during the course of the delayed off-side, any member of the attacking team touches the puck, attempts to gain possession of a loose puck, forces the defending puck carrier further back into his own zone, or who is about to make physical contact with the defending puck carrier, the Linesman shall stop play for the off-side violation. Did Makar touch the puck while Nichuskin was offsides? No, as seen by the replay. Did Makar attempt to gain possession of a loose puck before Nichuskin got on-side? No, he already had possession, so he can't be attempting to gain it. There was no defending puck carrier, so the other two cases are irrelevant. Did Nichuskin get on-side before Makar touched the puck or entered the attacking zone? Yes Therefore, good goal!

In case anyone is curious to look it up on the NHL rule book, page 127 (page 138 of the pdf), Rule 83.3: If, during the course of the delayed off-side, any member of the attacking team touches the puck, attempts to gain possession of a loose puck, forces the defending puck carrier further back into his own zone, or who is about to make physical contact with the defending puck carrier, the Linesman shall stop play for the off-side violation. In this scenario the argument was that he didn’t maintain control but fails to recognize the attempt to steady the wobbling puck as an attempt to gain possession while his teammate is still offside, if that’s not an attempt to gain possession I don’t know what is, the linesman is human, humans make mistakes, and this one according to their own rule book made a mistake on that call.

Two things about the interpretation of the Delayed Offside rule that makes no sense. First of all, if they're claiming Makar doesn't have control of the puck because at the time the puck crosses the blue line the stick is no longer touching the puck then practically all checks in hockey can now be penalised! If the player's stick is not touching the puck, he's not in control of the puck, therefore any body check can be deemed interference. #Bonkers Secondly, looking up Rule 83 on the NHL website states the following, 83.3 Delayed Off-side - A situation where an attacking player (or players) has preceded the puck across the attacking blue line, but the defending team is in a position to bring the puck back out of its defending zone without any delay or contact with an attacking player, or, the attacking players are in the process of clearing the attacking zone. If an off-side call is delayed, the Linesman shall drop his arm to nullify the off-side violation and allow play to continue if: (i) All players of the offending team clear the zone at the same instant (skate contact with the blue line) permitting the attacking players to re-enter the attacking zone, or (ii) The defending team passes or carries the puck into the neutral zone. If, during the course of the delayed off-side, any member of the attacking team touches the puck, attempts to gain possession of a loose puck, forces the defending puck carrier further back into his own zone, or who is about to make physical contact with the defending puck carrier, the Linesman shall stop play for the off-side violation. | So the key part of this rule why the referees after review called a good goal is this part - 'If, during the course of the delayed off-side, any member of the attacking team touches the puck' - so I suppose this is open to interpretation by the referees that as the puck was not in contact with the stick the player wasn't touching the puck, therefore not in possession of the puck so this nullifies the delayed offside (I'm looking forward to 99% of all checks being called 2 mins for interference going forward - dumb rule) However, the next part of the sentence is 'attempts to gain possession of a loose puck' - so are they also stating that Makar (who enters the zone in possession of the puck) is no longer attempting to gain possession until his stick touches the puck again? The NHL really do need to review not only the referee training but also their own rule book. There's been several bonkers decisions made after reviews in the post season and it has affected the results of games. I'm interested in your view of the above because I'm one confused UK hockey fan who's very tired staying up watching these fantastic series

@Thack lol yes, not a great advert for goaltending. I would say it is idiotic to call it a dump and chase when clearly he was entering the offensive zone in control of the puck hence the right application is delayed offside until either the zone is cleared or offside is called. It also had a huge bearing on the game as it meant 2-2 at end of 1st not 2-3 with nearly full 2 min pp on clean ice - which they scored to make it 2-4.

@@cjones7246 They aren't claiming Makar didn't have possession. In fact, him having possession is precisely why it's a good goal. @@cjones7246 again, it is possible to have possession of something without control. That isn’t why this is on side, but it is the fact of the matter. Possession is only relevant to off side when you have “possession” of the puck and enter before the puck, Makar didn’t enter before the puck therefore possession is a non-issue in this instance. He has possession of it, but considering he isn’t in the zone before the puck that does not matter. He doesn’t attempt to gather a loose puck, because it wasn’t a loose puck. Going forward I would say Smith because he's a fighter and the kind of guy to have a revenge game whereas Koskinen is inconsistent, but I agree as a Smith fan that starting Koskinen isn't a bad decision. On the Makar goal, I am an Oilers fan so I felt it was offside. After looking at all of the angles, I agree it's a lot close and I understand where the refs are coming from, but I still felt like Makar had enough control to call it offside. His stick was less than a foot away from the puck so I think it was offside, and I think the Avs fans chanting "ref you suck" was immature, but we do it a lot too. Woodcroft is undefeated in game 2s. His adjustments have been legendary those far leading to pummelings against the Kings and the Flames in game 2s and 3. Oilers only hope is that the Avalanche goalie is almost as bad.. i think the backup who looks like will be playing next game is better than Kuemper.. if that means anything.. btw, where were oilers fans when a Calgary goal directed in was called kicking.. there was way more of an argument for that to be a good goal (and no I'm not a flames fan lol)

Steve didn't listen to the explanation on Makar's goal, obviously. That, or the SPORTSNET broadcast didn't bother to explain it like the TNT crew did. it's a tag up play, where Makar (however inadvertent it might have been) pushes the puck into the offensive zone, while he's still behind the blue line, and doesn't touch it again until Nichushkin is onside. Had Makar touched the puck in the offensive zone before that, it would have been no goal. It's really not complicated, and it's kind of annoying that some people are acting like it's the theory of relativity.

@@eddiestanford7308 He doesn't. He isn't there as part of the broadcast team. He has some kind of relationship with SportsNet and they allow him to do these "watch a game with Steve" streams. He is just watching a game, and commenting on what he sees as a fan of the game, not as an analyst, not as a guy with access to replays, or with access to the war room, or anything else. If you want to watch the game without Steve, feel free. Dangle is a rare Leaf fan, he actually likes hockey, beyond the Blue and White, he is funny, mostly unbiased, has great reactions and is knowledgeable. What he is doing is making the game available to Canadians, on youtube, for FREE, anywhere you get internet service, with no local blackouts. If you don't like it, last time I checked, you can still just close the window. Enjoy the playoffs.

@@JohnA891 What is your problem? I know who he is, I know he's not part of the broadcast team, and I know he doesn't have access to the "war room", as you put it. And I did not watch the game with him, and know full well what my options are to watch. All I said, was if you're going to render an opinion on something, try to actually understand what happened. Because, guess what? I don't work for the broadcast, either. I don't have access to any war room, either. There were replays on TV that could easily be seen. And if he couldn't hear the explanation, because he has no sound, then how does he expect to understand what happened? I have been extremely annoyed by the number of people who haven't bothered to educate themselves about the rule, who have been popping off about how the play should have been offside, and creating controversy where there doesn't need to be. If THAT bothers you, then, last time I checked, you can just not read my comments.

Delayed offsides Steve. Bad rule,but they didn't just put it in tonight,as many Oiler fans,& you act like. All of Canada's desperation to end almost 3 decades Cupless streak is blinding you. For good or bad, that's the rule...of course it's a bad rule. But you can't change it during the game-or even playoffs-to help Canada. Gonna be amazing series,we got a big,ugly, concerning win. But 1-0 is 1-0.

They tried getting rid of this rule, realized it was mistake, and brought it back in 2015. I don't see them going back.

The game is going faster with skaters becoming better and better, and you want the ref to have this arbitrary ruling where control (an intangible measurement) is a factor for offside??
@bwdnako

The fact that even the national broadcast announcers have no idea why the Makar goal was not offsides is one of the most glaring examples of why the NHL officials NEED to get better about explaining what they are reviewing and then why the decision was made. So many times you see stoppages and they go put the headset on and no one has any clue what they are looking at.

He moved 10 feet with the puck, because of his stick. That my friends is possession. The puck didnt magically move all by itself. It was because makar moved it. It just happened to NOT be on his stick for the exact moment VN gets back onside, but im sorry thats still possession. The puck is never on your stick the entire time you are skating.
