Steve Earle has lived through the sort of horrors that have launched a million country songs: addiction, affliction, heartbreak, even prison. He wears them in his voice, but what's most appealing about him is the wide-eyed, unmistakable fearlessness with which he goes about his life these days. The singer, author, actor and activist showcases many of his talents at the NPR Music offices.
Set List:
"Waitin' On The Sky"
"Every Part Of Me"
"This City"

Mr. Earle is the perfect example of using what you are given and making something tremendous out of it. He goes to show that you can either let your struggles define you, or you can use them to shape you into something better. Good on ya Mr. Earle :)

I bought steve and dwights first records when they came out back in the 80s. It was important for me to hear new country music from 2 guys that actually knew what the hell it was, is and will always be in it's truest form: honest.

Just saw this genius last Thursday. 30th anniversary of the Copperhead Road album. They played the entire album from beginning to end and then some exit zero and guitar town and more. Glad I was able to see him.

Steve's songs, more often than not, really resonate for me. Nothing boring about them, or him ... but then again, I love to listen and learn; share another human being's perspective and experience. Good storytellers usually have my attention, despite any possible character flaws.

It's pretty dire straits in the music world today; And if it's real' music, in today's world of everything but, i don't care I love it or can learn to love it. because of the connection between the writer, singer, and song and what emotions that ensues.

Recently re-watched The Wire and had no idea this guy was a musician. He plays a recovering addict in the show and from the looks of it he mainly plays himself.
@darlincommitme

The acting is just a side thing, and he is the first to say he played a version of himself on The Wire. It was his first acting gig. David Simon is a fan, and asked him to play the part. He is a recovering addict, with 20 years last fall. Check out his music. though, which is where he really excels. His late 90s albums I Feel All Right and El Corazon are good places to start.

Yes he mainly played himself in The Wire. Thank God for that. Who else would one play? BTW: Check out his song about mining and miners. Levon covered it perfectly on one of his albums. Could be the best miners’ song in recent memory. Anyone ever catch Steve giving the middle finger salute to the Blue Angels as they flew over Golden Park during Hardly Strictly? Good memories!

I was fortunate enough to hear Steve read an excerpt from his book in Readings in Melbourne. Then later that same night saw him perform a memorable show at the Corner Hotel. He lifts the soul and gives hope when hope seems futile. The last of honest troubadours. A storyteller without spin. Who could begrudge that??

A few years ago while attempting to buy a friend a t shirt at the house of blues in New Orleans I found the gift shop was closed. Right about that time I noticed a flyer for Steve. When I asked when he was playing there the guy said about 5 minutes ago. I turned to my friends and told them they were welcome come with me but I was going. They left, I saw Steve alone. Which was cool because I thoroughly enjoyed it.
