Afro-Cuban is the genre and includes several styles eg Mozambique, Mambo, Guaguanco, Nanigo. "Afro-Cuban Ryhthms for Drum Set" by Frankie Malabe gives a great analysis of all these styles. In Steve's "Up Close" video he describes "Late in the Evening" as being based off a Mozambique. Steve tended to create hybrid rhythms for his albums. Somebody mentioned Samba and Steve uses that too. But these are not authentic rhythms in either style and Steve has never claimed that they are. He remains a fantastic influence as one who has adapted and applied these styles to his work in a very personal way. It was an honour to meet him and discuss his work on this occasion.

It's kind of like watching Yo-Yo Ma play the cello. Whether it's from decades of practice, or natural talent, or both, the end result is such a calm control over the instrument that it is both exciting and soothing to watch and listen to.

Total TASTE, Total Control. Building something from nothing. It's why the smart drummers know about Steve Gadd and seek him out; clinics, concerts, shows. He's the most complete drummer on the planet. No wonder artists and producers alike want him on their records. Latin / Afro-Cuban grooves are the last frontier for grooves within the groove.

The drummers in the audience are having a moment because they realize they are not as creative as Steve Gadd, lol.Gadd comes from a generation of drummers who were, and still are, much more musical than today.Today is just about complexity of chops and technique for the most part.Steve Gadd made his chops into hit recordings that reached many more people.Think and listen to Gadd's drum parts on "Fifty Ways to Leave your Lover",and "Aja" as an example.Tell me what drummer under 40 is known for their drum parts the same.Don't blame it on the industry, blame it on the collective output of today's artists, vocals included.
