I was told this: Gadd got a sheet - some band he was playing. And somehow it did not sound right. There was a quarter of a note wrong in the sheet and Gadd played it like that. He fixed it and came to the groove. What a drummer

Anyone who can't feel the groove or respect it isn't a real drummer, I'm 50 now and just played drums as a hobby, never was serious about it never had any formal training either, Never got really fast or anywhere near the talent in so many drummers alive and passed. I played everything from southern Gospel to Slayer and Pantera etc. At the time I never disrespected the drummers from the music genres. Somehow during this time I acquired a funk, didn't even know I had it really it was just me and how I felt the music. I was told by one of my peers that the reason they kept me in their band even tho others were wanting to be in the band and they were far better drummers than me, they told me no one has a funk like you man. They just loved it. I didn't feel it was anything special but others better than me did, so yes Groove and funk is very important in drums. I'm actually just getting acquainted with Mr Gadd. I love his grooves.

so dynamic , so melodic.....you can sing what hes playing!! thats why it works ....who needs other instruments when the complete melody is being played here....not a pattern but a rhythm song....this is what conga players and djembe players know....try to play these forms on the drums...not patterns.....not as a final goal anyway....music out of technique....Gadd is a master at this!!! it's a left hand flam, and also, the second and the last note that plays the left hand -in this pattern- have accents. Notice that there's also a slight variation on how he hits the cowbell.

Steve Gadd based his groove on the Mozambique in the hit Paul Simon song "Late In The Evening." Without his drumming in that song, I don't think it would be known as a "legendary" song. The other Gadd groove I was referring to is "50 Ways To Leave Your Lover," also by Paul Simon.

It's the same pattern all the way thru, from the hi-hat in the beginning to the snare/hi-hat playing at the end. Simplified it is - rL RLRRLRLRRLRRLR. Then just repeat(rL stands for flam of course). Or am I misunderstanding your question?

@drex48239 On a single drum, it's a flam ( both hands at the same time awkwardly cancel each other out). One different drums, one should try to get both hits more or less simultaneously.

@aunshi190 too true, good music is dying out at a stunning rate. musicians don't think freely for the most part anymore, it's all catchy pop tunes. gadd obviously thought freely as a musician and grooved, very much a 60's and 70's thing.

@BEOWULF282 dude u got it rite, and koodos to u for that. but if u listen carefully at the beginning, there is actually a rest between the both hands and the first right sticking. its a crucial componenet of the drum beat to have the eight note rest. so it would look like this. |B RLRRLR|LRRLRRLR||

just sing a long.....youll internalize and then eventually it will come in some form as you establish some sticking here.....if you can sing what you play .....u got a shot.......love it...
